Something Weird @ MAD Museum 6/9/12 7PM

Believe it or not all my rambling about VHS has paid off! The Museum of Art and Design, Jake Yuzna, Rebecca Cleman and I (Matthew Desiderio) have put together the mother of all VHS tributes with screenings, workshops, and a real functioning video store on site.

VHS at MAD takes places between June 9th and August 18th.

Museum of Art and Design is located at 2 Columbus Circle, New York, NY 10019

Come see VHS get its due respect at the MAD Museum in NYC! The Museum of Art and Design has allowed the likes of VHShitfest, Horror BoobsLunchmeat Vhs Fanzine and more to present films of the VHS era that are dear to their hearts. Experience rare SOV classics like Hellroller and Tales From The Quadead Zone on the big screen, come to a live work out session dictated by the weirdest fitness videos in existence, or come and rent a copy of Jerry Macguire from the pop-up rental store. VHS makes anything possible and this is proof so don’t miss this chance to be a part of VHiStory!

In celebration of the influential medium known as VHS, the Museum of Arts and Design presents a three-month survey of the short-lived video revolution. VHS screenings include a wide array of VHS offerings, including rare genre films, bootleg rock concert videos, independent works by the likes of Todd Haynes, Troma Video, and Nam June Paik, live workout classes by Richard Simmons and Susan Powter, and lost public access gems. In honor of its VHS series, MAD has also recreated a video rental store within its walls. In its exploration of the mutliple facets of the format, VHS demonstrates the impact of this technology on the history of cinema.

What beter way to kick it all of this Friday June 9th at 7PM than with a screening of the H.G. Lewis classic Something Weird screened from a special composite tape containing Something Weird Video trailers, a Joe Bob Briggs intro and outro from The Sleaziest Movies in the History of the World tape, and more!  And who better to present it than my good buddy, Horror Culture Enthusiasts and lover of Something Weird: Mike Hunchback.

Something Weird
1967, Dir. Herschell Gordon Lewis
With Tony McCabe, Elizabeth Lee, and William Brooker

Directed by cult icon Herschell Gordon Lewis, Something Weird brings together a uncanny plot including LSD, psychic phenomena, a grotesque witch who can morph into a beautiful young woman, a kung fu socialite, ghosts, federal agents, psychopaths, and much more. A standout work from the midcentury exploitation and underground film movement, Something Weird was nearly lost until the distribution company Something Weird Video was founded in 1990, taking both its name and its logo from the film.

Something Weird Video released numerous Gordon Lewis films, as well as many other exploitation films, European genre films, and forgotten classics. Taking advantage of the video market formed by VHS, Something Weird Video and other likeminded distributors originated a curatorial approach that championed cinematic works through VHS release and video store selections. By doing so, these companies gave new life to cinematic oddities that pushed boundaries in both their subject matter and their approach to narrative filmmaking.

Special introduction by Mike Hunchback, Horror Culture Enthusiast and curator of Hershel Gordon Lewis and Frank Henenlotter retrospective.

So put everything else on pause and come out to one of the many VHS events at the MAD Museum!

I BURY THE LIVING // Albert Band // 1958

A new caretaker at the Immortal Hill Cemetery begins to believe he holds the power of life and death in his hands. Is it merely coincidence or are sinister forces at work?

KILLING SPREE// Tim Ritter // 1987 // courtesy of Camp Motion Pictures/Alternative Cinema

Tom Russo (Asbestos Felt) has begun to suspect his wife of cheating. So he takes to the streets to get revenge in a myriad of horrible ways. No one is safe!

Tim Ritter is infamous for his outrageous, low-budget horror films including Creep, Wicked Games and Truth or Dare. His 1987 feature Killing Spree (1987) wallows in extreme violence, insanity and gore-soaked depravity. Part Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and part Pieces, it’s a no-holds-barred glimpse into the mind of a paranoid schizophrenic and bloodthirsty psychopath – presented uncut and uncensored.

THE TAINT // Drew Bolduc & Dan Nelson // 2010 // courtesy of the filmmakers.

The water is tainted. THE TAINT poisons the minds of men. It turns them into raging misogynists: monsters who want nothing more than to KILL WOMEN. When society is transformed into a land of sadistic violence and horrible brutality, it is up to Phil OʼGinny and his female friend, Misandra, to combat the horrible evil that is “THE TAINT”.

The low-budget independent film was made in Richmond, VA with the help of many incredibly talented local artists and Virginia Commonwealth University students. It is a testament to guerilla style filmmaking and a great example of what can be accomplished outside of the studio system with very little money.

Finding him hiding inside a scarecrow, they exact brutal mob “justice”…only to discover a tragic mistake! Now a strange apparition stalks the land seeking each of them out, as the legend of the Scarecrow begins.

TALES FROM THE QUADEAD ZONE // Chester Novell Turner // 1987

Following “Black Devil Doll from Hell” Chester Novell Turner made one more foray into the exciting world of SOV horror. Tales from the Quadead Zone is that film. Shirley L. Jones returns to star in this three story anthology. As she reads each tale of terror from the tome to her ghostly son Bobby, the events unfold before her each more baffling than the last. Join us for an experience you won’t soon forget. Far and away one of the rarest tapes around, Spectacle is proud to have this as part of our first Shriek Show.

DEEP RED // Dario Argento // 1975

A music teacher witnesses the grisly death of a psychic and becomes obsessed with trying to find the killer.

The 5th film written and directed by Dario Argento is filled with untrustworthy characters, red herrings, stylized violence, and a fantastic Goblin score. At times, cited as the best giallo ever made, Deep Red is as beautiful as it is ghastly.

HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE

March 10 – March 13

Throughout the 1950s and 60s, literally hundreds of American filmmakers journeyed into the realm of Exploitation. There was money to be made then from cheap movies, and the result was a vast sea of no-budget flicks pushing either cars, monsters, killers, or supple skin. Very few of these films rose above the norm of the time, and far fewer actually tried to reinvent a seemingly fixed genre. Herschell Gordon Lewis and producer David F. Friedman knew that staying ahead of the game was the best way to make a buck, and, thanks to the combination of their ambition and their skewed minds, they ended up blazing a trail for independent cinema that America hasn’t seen the likes of since.
To celebrate the release of HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE, Anthology offers up a special program of rarely-screened H.G. Lewis films, which represent just a few of his absolutely madcap takes on Exploitation Cinema.
This program is presented with Something Weird Video. All descriptions are by Mike Hunchback (Freedom School Records). Special thanks to Mike Hunchback, Frank Henenlotter, Mike Vraney & Lisa Petrucci (Something Weird Video), and Eric Caidin (Hollywood Book and Poster Company).

On Friday, March 11, Frank Henenlotter and Joe Bob Briggs will be here to present the 7:00 screening of HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE!

Upcoming Screenings

Try to make it out on Friday night at say high to Frank and Joe!
