Even though it’s damn near the middle of February I thought the following list of Forbidden Planet NYC’s most popular, best-selling graphic novels of 2013 would be of some interest.
Perhaps you’re looking for a new read, and are curious as to what the cool kids in the heppest city in the solar system are picking up (even if some of these books have been perennial faves for years and years). Perhaps you’ll be looking at this list for some other reason (stalkers). Either way, thanks to all our customers who made 2013, and every year, such a great time to be in the business of slinging quality books!
It’s a rather lengthy post so it continues after the jump…
The funky cool DC Villain month covers continue to march upon the shelves, making all other books jealous. YES, I would like a 3D lenticular Penguin cover! Thank you, Batman 23, that is ever so polite of you! So shiny! So motion-y.
By comparison, all other comics seem as boring as a rained out golf match. IF we could judge books by their covers, then I’d say that DC is winning this month. BUT WE CAN’T, because the government won’t let us. Thanks a lot, Bloomberg.
DEV’S “I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH
Occasionally, through deep meditation and special herbs, I have flashes of insight and knowledge beyond my ken. I do my best to share these brain burst with you, my readers, in the hopes that you will be seeds in the fertile soil of the marketplace and sprout the fruit of my visions through consumer action.
We need a crossover where Gamera fights the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
I leave this up to IDW to arrange. After all, they currently have the TMNT license, as evidenced by their Classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol 6 and The New Animated TMNT #3 on the shelves this week. They ALSO have an amazing talent for publishing inter company material, as evidences by their incredible artist additions of some top quality work from Marvel, Dark Horse and more. TRUE, there is no DC artist editions yet, but there are MAD artist editions and MAD, like DC, is a Warner IP.
Third, IDW has done a great job of crossovers! Under IDW Popeye has fought off the Mars Attacks Martians. The Ghostbusters have fought off Cthulhu. BOTH Star Trek and the Transformers fought off a zombie invasion borne of the Robots and Zombies universe!
Dark Horse published some Gamera books in the not too distant past. Who knows who currently holds the license. I’m sure IDW can get to the bottom of it.
FRIENEMIES IN A HALF SHELL
Gamera, for the three of you not in the know and the hundreds of you who are pretending like you do, is a giant mutant turtle with tusks who is the Pepsi to Godzilla’s Coke. They inhabit different worlds but accomplish the same goal…stripping the paint off of cars through stomping and fire breathing! YES Gamera is predominantly a good guy (or girl. I don’t mean to make gender stereotypes of turtles through my ignorance) as are the TMNT. How to make these erstwhile allied fight?
SIMPLE: Using the current turtle comic continuity, Krang uses his dimensional portal to bring in a monster capable of destroying the city. This monster is none other than Gyaos, the winged arch meanie of Gamera! Gamera is drawn to the fight, but the turtles mistake him for their enemy and go at him with deadly ninja force!
Should this be a hit (and how could it not) we can get right on to the follow up, Gamera Vs. TMNT Vs. Blastoise! Nintendo are notoriously stingy with sharing their IPs, so this may be a bit of a long shot. Plus we all know Mega Evolved Blastoise would win.
A PLEA FOR SANITY
Though originally solicited about a month ago, Previews is reporting that Sam Henderson’s Magic Whistle #13 is shipping this week. Who am I to argue with Previews? Let’s say, hypothetically, that I am wrong and Magic Whistle has already shipped.
Let this serve as a REMINDER to pick up a copy. Sam Henderson is to comics as Gallagher is to the fruit smoothie industry, which is to say a subtle genius ahead of his time. Don’t be put off by the art, which admittedly looks like a cross between Hello Kitty and Guernica. The Magic Whistle will genuinely make you smile, laugh, and believe in the healing powers of idiocy.
NEXT WEEK: Unkiedev pitches his incredible Big Bird Vs. Killer Shrike comic idea, and we print an apology to everybody who actually purchased Magic Whistle #13 based on this column. An apology, but not a retraction. “I’m sorry you can’t appreciate the greatest comics genius of our time.” THERE’S your apology, philistine!
New York Comic-Con is coming up, and so are dozens of regional shows throughout the country. And what’s the biggest thing going at conventions these days… other than cosplay? Meeting and greeting our favorite creators! For many of you, it’s also a chance to commission sketches by some of the most talented artists in the world as well.
These sketches tend to look kinda poopy when you hand the creator your grocery list and say to the artist, “Yo, draw the Punisher on the back of this for me.” Or something to that effect. That’s why IDW Publishing created their own Convention Sketchbook.
Using the same high-quality paper from our prestigious hardcover collections, your sketches will look fantastic while being protected from creases and exterior contaminants.
On Monday August 20th 2012 we’re going to give away 5 of these sketchbooks to 5 Twitter followers! How do you enter to win one? Follow the simple steps below:
- Follow us on Twitter if you don’t already. (Existing followers are eligible, too.)
- RT the tweet we’ve posted this evening OR send us the following Tweet:
Hey @FPNYC Please enter me to win an @IDWPublishing Convention Sketckbook!
- Um. That’s about it!
We’ll be picking five winners on Monday 8/20/12 at 5pm EDT. Good Luck!

The nineties comic book boom (and subsequent crash) was based on two factors that are still cavorting through the forest of comics today. One is the Unicorn of variant covers, the other is the lion of investor speculation. See how nimbly they prance!
The resale of comic books was viewed as a big business, and the launch of Image comics meant that savvy comic book buyers could get in on the ground floor of a gold mine by purchasing every #1 Image had to publish. Soon, Image and other companies started to publish massive amounts of variant covers to rake in the cash from this wave of speculation.
Since then things have changed…but the Unicorn still dances. Now variant covers are the big marketing tool of the least expected: Marvel and DC. The big two release a theme of variant covers almost weekly to promote upcoming events, movie tie-ins and to spotlight characters.
When Tron was in the theaters Marvel had a wave of TRON themed covers. When they felt like promoting Wolvie a bit more they did variant covers to every single title they had with the chuggin’ canuk on the cover. Do yourself a favor and google “JLApe” if you were too young to remember the time when every DC title had a monkey variant cover. Continue reading
What a week for insanely violent comic madness. It’s as if Satan himself came up from hell and packed our shelves with his favorite stuff.
Avatar publishing has been at the top of their gruesome game with releases like Crossed, Garth Ennis’ take on the zombie genre, and Alan Moore’s Cthulhu-rape masterpiece, Neonomicon. If that’s not enough to get your blood pumping, this weeks’ Caligula #1 by little Davey Lapham will surely do it. It’s all the messed up good fun expected from the man who brought you my favorite comic of all time, Stray Bullets.
Also, the highly anticipated return of Godzilla to our beloved comic shelves has been realized this week by our good friends, IDW publishing. With Eric Powell’s name attached to this book we just know its gonna be good. Just look at that beautiful gatefold cover he did for the first issue. Grab a copy of Godzilla #1 while you still can, I know this baby is gonna go fast.
Famous Monsters of Filmland issue number 70 is the first of hopefully manny “missing issue” releases. This baby is a monster kid’s dream come true, perfectly reproducing the look, content and flavor of classic FM issues. It’s worth it alone for the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger photo spread from Hercules in New York.
Click the cover to get your grubby little hands on a copy!
In a tip of the hat to our grand old name, Famous Monsters presents the first of the missing issues. FM Retro 70, written in the style of the original Famous Monsters of Filmland, offers features on Count Yorga, Vampire; Hercules in New York; Bride of Frankenstein and more. Also original features, Mystery Photo, You Axed For It, Fang Mail and Things to Come. The Retro Cover is by Jeff Preston, edited by your favorite Monster cuz Mighty Joe Moe, and of course we have Forrest J Ackerman as our Honorary Editor-in-Chief!
While I’m at it, God bless the good folks over at IDW Publishing for keeping the spirit of the Ackermonster alive by publishing new issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine.
Click on the cover to pick up a copy of issue 254 which has an awesome Vincent Price article!
I’m very pleased to announce that this coming Monday, November 8th, at 6:30pm Forbidden Planet will be hosting a signing with the creators of Kill Shakespeare, a swell new comic series published by IDW. Messrs Conor McCreery, Anthony Del Col, and artist Andy Belanger will be scribbling all over copies of their comics, as well as their new trade paperback (which collects issues #1-6).
