Val’s Toy Chest- POPs Everywhere…

As I was working in the Forbidden Planet Forbidden Zone(aka the basement) today, I realized we have a TON of POP vinyls down here. They are still extremely popular and Funko certainly has one of the widest array of licenses out there. Since Friday, we’ve received about ten-to-twelve new POP figures and there’s definitely a whole bunch more coming. One of the hottest series thus far is the Golden Girls-so much so, that we’re currently sold out of the quartet. We should be getting more of those however, so I’ll save my Saint Olaf/Sicily stories for another time. For what we do have in stock- Labyrinth POPs just arrived. We have all four of the figures in now and I know that the Jareth POP will go fast- he is David Bowie after all. Sarah (Jennifer Connelly!) with Worm, Hoggle and the 6″ Ludo round out the series. A new series of Doctor Who POPs are in featuring variants on Doctors 10, 11, and 12. The 12th Doctor with guitar is pretty awesome. A 6″ Davros has also arrived. Though I’m not the biggest Whovian, an Amy Pond and an Astrid Peth need to happen. (Astrid was portrayed by Australian Pop star/ex-Cammy Kylie Minogue and I’d LOVE a POP figure of her.)  Something new that Funko is trying this year is the new collection of POP Pets. Several different kinds of dogs and cats are in this first wave and they are pretty darn cute. I’m a cat person myself and I think the Siamese is precious. Batman fans that prefer a little camp with their Dark Knight have the Joker from the 1967-1968 season’s “Surf’s Up! The Joker’s Under” dressed in his baggies and complete with surfboard to add to their collection.  No sign of Batman yet, though he’s probably out repelling a shark somewhere. Racing back onto our shelves is the Zoom POP from the most recent season of The Flash. I wouldn’t wait on that one FYI. Finally for you 80’s enthusiasts out there, Funko has introduced a line of scented POPs featuring everyone’s favorite fragrant female- Strawberry Shortcake. We have her and Lemon Meringue currently. Strawberry Shortcake smells like bubble bath in my opinion.

Other toys and toy-related items this week:

DC Collectibles has five brand new statues out this week from the recent Suicide Squad film. I haven’t seen it yet, but all my friends are currently split on it. We’ll see.  Characters that we have statues of include Deadshot, The Joker, Katana, Croc and Harley Quinn.

The Captain Phasma Hot Toys from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has arrived and she is beautiful. The chrome armor looks really striking and I hope she plays more of a role in the next films. Speaking of that film and Hot Toys, I just got notice that a certain someone will be scavenging her way into our store within the next couple of weeks. If you were a fan of Rey, she’ll be making her way in as a single figure soon. No word on the Rey/BB-8 two pack yet.

NECA has been crafting figures in 8-bit style for several years now and this time around we get a cool two-pack featuring one of the iconic games of the 80’s, Contra. The two pack features two fully articulated action figures painted to resemble the 8-bit style as well as a ton of accessories to recreate the video-game experience on your own shelves.

Lastly, my very first column featured a write-up on the Dark Horse Art of He-Man book which I can’t recommend enough. Continuing this tradition, I thought I’d mention the release of the complete guide to He-Man and She-Ra which will be on shelves this week.  The new book sounds like a blast as it details the Filmation adventures including trivia, synopses and more, I am definitely going to grab one ASAP!

Val’s Toy Chest- POP Explosion

Hey readers, as promised, I wrap-up Toy Fair with some brief news snippets along with other things going on this week. The big news though is that we just got a massive Funko order in and I wanted to share with you all the cool stuff that is here.

POP vinyls have expanded to so many different properties, including movies, TV shows, Anime, Videogames and much more. Doctor Who fans can rejoice as we have received four of the series 2 POPs. River Song, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness and The Ninth Doctor are in stock now and ready to time travel into your collection. Independence Day is getting a sequel this year and Funko has merchandise coming out for that film but before they go there, they’ve given us figures of Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith‘s characters along with the frightening Alien from the original film.  The Fun(ko) doesn’t stop there either. The latest Game of Thrones POPs have dropped and thus far we have Melisandre, Harpy and Jorah Marmont, in addition to the gorgeous Daenerys and Drogon POP Rides piece.  Other recent arrivals include Nibbler, Zapp Brannigan and Zoidberg from Futurama, Naruto and Sasuke from Naruto, the entire line of Disney’s Zootopia characters and a restock on Bob’s Burgers POPs (sans Linda Belcher thus far) and the gorgeous Voltron piece.  Harry Potter characters Dobby, Hermione in her Yule Ball outfit, a new Dumbledore and Sirius Black round out the latest and greatest in POP vinyl this week.

Funko has also teamed up with Vinyl Sugar and created the DORBZ line and the Vinyl Idolz line. New additions to the Vinyl Idolz are Stan Lee and Willy Wonka figurines. New DORBZ include Assasin’s Creed, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz characters.

Toy Fair 2016 was a fairly eventful one as far as cool new toys go. Fans of musical icons like Freddie Mercury and “Weird” Al Yankovic can look forward to figures of both this year.  Freddie’s figure is coming from Bandai while Al’s is, as covered in a previous column, from NECA. Bandai’s S.H. FiguArts line is also bringing those awesome Heroes in a Half-Shell to life with their new, highly anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line.  The initial four figures look to be based on the ’80’s Murakami Wolf Swenson animated series and they are GORGEOUS. I might need to invest in some of those. Speaking of the Turtles, NECA revealed they once again have a license to market TMNT toys and they are kicking it off with a quarter-scale figure of Donatello as he appeared in the 1990 New Line Cinema film. Good stuff.  NECA will also be introducing Alien3 figures into their Aliens toyline and this includes the bald Ripley figure as seen in that film. And as for Alien, check out our store window for the latest life-size replica from NECA, a 3 foot Alien Egg with Facehugger. Very cool piece.

Star Wars reveals were fairly light at Toy Fair but a 3 3/4″ Maz Kanata was confirmed as part of a multipack with Finn, Rey and BB-8, Rebels character, the Seventh Sister will also be getting a 3 3/4″ figure which is exciting to me as she is voiced by none other than Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar.  Star Wars Black 6″ adds Princess Leia Organa from A New Hope, Sabine from Rebels, an Empire Strikes Back Snowtrooper and Darth Revan.

Diamond Select had gorgeous figures from the X-Files‘ latest season featuring very good likenesses of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as well as an impressive Ghostbusters display that recreates the rooftop scene from the original movie which you can build if you buy all 12 of their movie figures on display at Toy Fair. I’m in for Janine, Gozer and Dana for sure.

This week marks the release of Black Canary, Volume 1 featuring the current series by Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu. The fate of the Black Canary book(as well as the Arrow character- more on that in a future column) is up in the air following DC’s latest rebirth news, though we may see Dinah in the recently announced Batgirl and the Birds of Prey title. If I’m not mistaken, Canary will also show up in Batgirl’s title this week too.

That’s it for me this week- catch you all next time!

Val’s Toy Chest- DC Toys at SDCC

Greetings, readers! This past weekend saw the conclusion of San Diego Comic Con and while I wasn’t there, I’ve been keeping tabs on the mountain of new announcements that have been made in toyland. There is far too much to run down in one column, so I will be sharing news with you for the next few weeks. This week, we’ll discuss the comics company nearest and dearest to my heart- DC Comics.

DC Collectibles showed off a bunch of new collectibles slated to hit sometime in 2016. I discussed the ICONS line before and DC has shown off four new additions to the line: The Joker, John Stewart Green Lantern, Firestorm and with Milestone characters returning to the DC stable, Static Shock. In their Batman: The Animated Series/New Batman Adventures line we will be treated to BTAS versions of Commissioner Gordon, Ra’s Al Ghul and my most anticipated- ZATANNA as well as a TNBA version of Etrigan the Demon who comes packed out with Klarion the Witchboy and Teekl the cat. Arrow and The Flash releases continue with the previously announced Laurel Lance/Black Canary figure that will be joined by a new season 3 Arrow figure, a Malcolm Merlyn figure that bears the visage of the handsome John Barrowman, the Reverse Flash and Heat Wave. The TV show figures are slated for a March 2016 release. DCC will continue their Designer Series with two additional Greg Capullo inspired figures of the Joker and Wonder Woman, a new Darwyn Cooke line featuring Supergirl, Batman, Harley Quinn in her roller derby look and Adam Strange as well as a Lee Bermejo line that will include Superman, Luthor, Batman and Green Lantern. DC had even more figures up their sleeve including animated Clayface, Firefly and Harley Quinn(presumably a TNBA version) as well as a Batgirl/Oracle two pack based on her appearance in “Arkham Knight.” No pictures were available of those items.

Mattel is rebranding their Multiverse line by shifting gears from 3 and 3/4″ figures into a refreshed 6″ line which features the return of the Collect and Connect figure. The first wave draws from both the comic books and TV shows and will include “Zero Year” Batman, The Joker from the recent “Endgame” storyline, the Superman of Earth 23, TV-inspired figures of The Flash, Reverse Flash and Arrow with the CNC figure being the Batman Justice Buster Armor also taken from the “Endgame” storyline. Mattel’s display featured toys from the forthcoming live-action Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice movie as well, including 6″ figures of Ben Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Not much news was shared about the female-focused “DC Super Hero Girls,” though a website was set up with brief bios of the main players. What I’ve seen thus far makes it sound like they’ve crossed the DC women with “Monster High.”

Mezco will continue their popular 1:12 line of cloth-covered 6 inch figures with a Flash and Superman figure that join the previously available Dark Knight Returns Batman. Non-DC characters slated for the line include Space Ghost and Judge Dredd. Hot Toys announced a new version of the Adam West Batman which will come with the iconic red Batphone, and showed their Batman Returns Batman and Bruce Wayne figures. A whole bevy of statues based on various DC characters from DC Collectibles, Tweeterhead and Sideshow made their first public appearance including the Yvonne Craig Batgirl and a Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman.

As far as this week goes, we will be getting one of the last two New 52-branded figures in this week with the release of the John Stewart Green Lantern figure. This leaves the Joker as the last figure for this line before DC gears up and starts pumping out the ICONS line. We should also be getting a restock on the Green Arrow figure from this same set. In non-DC news,  Funko’s Garbage Pail Kids finally hit and we have a nice display set up in our glass case with the entire set of 12 and the Adam Bomb vinyl figure. We should also be getting a couple of the Harry Potter POPs in, including Harry himself and my favorite; Hermione Granger. Dr. Who POPs have also started to show up in-store but have been selling briskly. Recently arrived POPs still available from these series as of this writing include Severus Snape, the Adipose and the Eleventh Doctor.

On a last note, issue #2 of Black Canary is out today and I look forward to seeing where Dinah’s tour will take us and her band next.

Next week: Marvel Toy News!
