Troma’s newest flick Return To Nuke Em’ High Vol. 1 is finally hitting theaters in NYC! Why is this important to me? Well I love Troma… duh! But for reals… one of my life long goals of being in a Lloyd Kaufman directed Troma film was finally fulfilled. Now this ain’t just any Troma flick, this is Return To Nuke Em’ High! I even made it into the trailer for a millisecond!

I saw this Tromasterpiece a few months back as part of The New York Horror Film Festival. And let me tell you… it was amazing! All the blood, boobs, and buffoonery that you could ever hope for! So mark your calendar and come out to support true independent cinema!

Screenings start January 10th at the Village East Cinema with a slew a special guests in attendance! For more info click HERE.

Lunchmeat VHS Magazine Presents Mother’s Day at MAD Museum 6/15

Come out this Friday June 15th at 7PM to the second screening in the VHS Series at the Museum of Arts and Design.  Josh Schafer publisher/editor of Lunchmeat VHS Magazine will present a VHS screening of Mother’s Day with a special Q&A session with Richard W. Haines director of Splatter University and Alien Space Avenger!

Museum of Arts and Design is located at 2 Columbus Circle, New York, NY 10019

Come see VHS get its due respect at the MAD Museum in NYC! The Museum of Art and Design has allowed the likes of VHShitfestHorror BoobsJunk Food Dinner and more to present films of the VHS era that are dear to their hearts. Experience rare SOV classics like Hellroller and Tales From The Quadead Zone on the big screen, come to a live work out session dictated by the weirdest fitness videos in existence, or come and rent a copy of Jerry Macguire from the pop-up rental store. VHS makes anything possible and this is proof so don’t miss this chance to be a part of VHiStory!

In celebration of the influential medium known as VHS, the Museum of Arts and Design presents a three-month survey of the short-lived video revolution. VHS screenings include a wide array of VHS offerings, including rare genre films, bootleg rock concert videos, independent works by the likes of Todd Haynes, Troma Video, and Nam June Paik, live workout classes by Richard Simmons and Susan Powter, and lost public access gems. In honor of its VHS series, MAD has also recreated a video rental store within its walls. In its exploration of the mutliple facets of the format, VHS demonstrates the impact of this technology on the history of cinema.

Mother’s Day
1980, Dir. Charles Kaufman
With Nancy Hendrickson, Deborah Luce, and Tiana Pierce

Troma Entertainment is one of the most famous, and arguably most original, American independent film companies of all time, producing cult classics like Toxic Avenger, Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., and Surf Nazis Must Die. In the mid 1980s, Troma embraced the emerging format and became a pioneer in the VHS market.

Written, produced and directed on a budget of only $115,000 by Charles Kaufman, the brother of Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma Entertainment INC, horror film Mother’s Day follows three girlfriends as they reunite for their annual camping trip. The young friends’ vacation turns into their worst nightmare when they are kidnapped by two demented punk/hillbilly brothers. Led by their insane mother, the brothers drag the young women through deranged scenarios conceived by the sadistic matriarch.

Showcasing new possibilities for breakthrough genre filmmaking, Mother’s Day was an early example of a filmmaker’s creation taking on a new life within the video market. The opportunities introduced by video distribution went on to influence generations of filmmakers.

Don’t miss this most epic analog event because in real life there is no rewind button!

Something Weird @ MAD Museum 6/9/12 7PM

Believe it or not all my rambling about VHS has paid off! The Museum of Art and Design, Jake Yuzna, Rebecca Cleman and I (Matthew Desiderio) have put together the mother of all VHS tributes with screenings, workshops, and a real functioning video store on site.

VHS at MAD takes places between June 9th and August 18th.

What beter way to kick it all of this Friday June 9th at 7PM than with a screening of the H.G. Lewis classic Something Weird screened from a special composite tape containing Something Weird Video trailers, a Joe Bob Briggs intro and outro from The Sleaziest Movies in the History of the World tape, and more!  And who better to present it than my good buddy, Horror Culture Enthusiasts and lover of Something Weird: Mike Hunchback.

Something Weird
1967, Dir. Herschell Gordon Lewis
With Tony McCabe, Elizabeth Lee, and William Brooker

Directed by cult icon Herschell Gordon Lewis, Something Weird brings together a uncanny plot including LSD, psychic phenomena, a grotesque witch who can morph into a beautiful young woman, a kung fu socialite, ghosts, federal agents, psychopaths, and much more. A standout work from the midcentury exploitation and underground film movement, Something Weird was nearly lost until the distribution company Something Weird Video was founded in 1990, taking both its name and its logo from the film.

Something Weird Video released numerous Gordon Lewis films, as well as many other exploitation films, European genre films, and forgotten classics. Taking advantage of the video market formed by VHS, Something Weird Video and other likeminded distributors originated a curatorial approach that championed cinematic works through VHS release and video store selections. By doing so, these companies gave new life to cinematic oddities that pushed boundaries in both their subject matter and their approach to narrative filmmaking.

Special introduction by Mike Hunchback, Horror Culture Enthusiast and curator of Hershel Gordon Lewis and Frank Henenlotter retrospective.

So put everything else on pause and come out to one of the many VHS events at the MAD Museum!

REMINDER!! Tonight at Midnight!

Midnight Friday February 10th

at the Landmark Sunshine Theater

The urban legend known as ‘The Father’s Day Killer’ began some years after the demise of serial rapist/murderer Chris Fuchman. Since the 1970s, the use of contraceptives has tripled in North America alone and a generation of fathers fell asleep with the covers pulled tight, buttocks clenched. The story has become a fire-side cautionary ritual on camping trips, often used by fathers to warn their sons of the dangers of unplanned pregnancy. That deep seeded fear of penetration, violation and eventually death waned as the murder and rape of fathers continued to decline all over the world. Unfortunately those numbers didn’t remain low, and it would seem that the legend is not yet complete…
Ahab, a man obsessed with exacting a brutal, violent revenge on the man who murdered his dad, joins John, an eager priest and Twink, a hot-headed street hustler on an epic quest to find and defeat this mythical monster known as Chris Fuchman AKA The Father’s Day Killer.

Troma’s NYC Father’s Day premiere FEB 10th

The newest slice of sleaze from Troma premieres Midnight Friday February 10th at NYC’s Landmark Sunshine Theater.   Astron-6’s twisted tale of father rape and revenge may just be another drop in the bucket of Tromatic insanity, but compared to the Sunshine’s usual mundane midnight fare of Goonies and Princess Bride – Father’s Day is gonna blow some poor NYU kids brain.
