Meet The New Mighty Viking In HEATHEN #1

You will fear her name!

Do you like Thor? Northlanders? Red Sonja or Conan? Do you want to see kick ass warriors? Maybe you’re a proponent for strong female lead characters in comics? Are you burned out on superheroes and want some good old fashioned demon battles and talking horses? Here’s the new series to scratch all of your itches but careful, this self-proclaimed heathen might draw a little blood.

At Forbidden Planet we like to root for the underdog. There are publishers big enough to make sure you know every character’s name, origin(s), and costume tweak. Then there are the indie companies who may not have the budget or the name recognition but what they do have are badass books. Heathen #1 is one such book.

Aydis is a on a mission to kill a god. Well, she’s on a mission to end the reign of a tyrant god-king called Odin. Killing him may or may not be possible. Aydis is all the things I mentioned earlier. She’s a viking badass warrior. She’s also an outcast, a heathen, and a friend to talking horses. Except her talking horse has a cool name, Saga (yeah they did). Aydis battles demons. She takes on crazy cool monsters. And yes, she’s a woman. She’s been born at a time where war is prevalent, suffering is universal, and women are treated as less than. This is her story as told by Natasha Alterici. It’s not the beginning but it is where you will join her journey if you give this new series a chance. We heartily recommend that you do.

Sin City, Here Comes ELEKTRA #1

It’s going to be a hot time in the old town tonight…

Marvel’s been building their own mini-universe within the Daredevil section of 616. Broadly titled “Running With The Devil” there’s a trio of titles to go along with old hornhead. Earlier this month we previewed the on-target Bullseye #1. We followed it up by highlighting the comeback of Wilson Fisk in Kingpin #1 (written by Forbidden Planet’s former master of the hand sell, Matthew Rosenberg). Now, we cap off this trifecta with Marvel’s deadliest assassin! Odds are this series is going to be killer.

Elektra‘s had quite a past. What with dying a few times, having been the head of the Hand, her epic love story with a certain pointy-headed blind vigilante, and at one point being the highest paid assassin in the world. If you were carrying all that baggage where would you go to get away from it all? Vegas, baby! Surely no one will notice her amidst all the neon and ulterior motives. Of course, can a former ninja assassin really expect to escape all of her history of violence when a new player wants to get in on the game? Welcome to the table: Arcade!

If you wanted some further Marvel Netflix U crossover then boy have you got it with this book. Not only is it a new adventure for the character after her television debut in the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil but it’s written by newcomer Matt Owens. Get it? You don’t get it. Okay, Matt Owens is a television writer who worked on Marvel’s Luke Cage and even had a couple episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. This marks Matt Owens’ first foray into comics after a career on the small screen and internships under Cully Hammer and Brian Starfleeze. Plus, it’s got art by Juan Cabal, so Owens has plenty of muscle to tell the first story entitled, “Casino Battle Royale.”

This new comic book day, Elektra’s changing the rules. Wanna play?

Gods Come To Texas in GOD COUNTRY #2

Finally, the next chapter of this Gods among us epic is here!

In case you missed it (if you did, go get a copy of God Country #1 immediately), one of the best new series has its next issue coming out this New Comic Book Day. It’s rare when a book this good comes along. Do you like Southern Bastards? Thor? Epic mythological tales with heartbreaking family drama? Then you’ve no excuse not picking up God Country #2 this week.

Donny Cates (Buzzkill, The Ghost Fleet) might just be making a cult favorite. In the first issue we learned some of the deep and mythology busting secrets of Emmett Quinlan and his family. Having returned home to take care of his aging and mentally deteriorating father, Emmett was putting his wife and child through the ringer. His wife had had enough of Emmett’s dad’s cruelty and Emmett’s stubbornness to put his father in a home where he could be cared for properly. For some reason, still to be further explored, Emmett couldn’t bare to “give up” on his dad. Meanwhile, a twister was getting set to touch down. Little did we know this was no ordinary tornado and that it carried within it the key to unlocking mysteries of Emmett and his father.

After the amazing reveal at the end of the first issue, Emmett will continue to attempt to rebuild his family in the wake of the storm that broke them. Meanwhile, something otherworldly screams through the sky under a banner of war. The Gods have touched down in Texas and they are not going to leave empty handed. Why are you still reading?!?Buy your copy and get in on this at the ground floor.

Not sure if you can make it Wednesday? Sign up for a subscription box and put it on your pull list! This is one journey you don’t want to be left behind for.

LONG LIVE WILSON FISK IN KINGPIN #1

Long Live The Kingpin!

After his comeback in the acclaimed Civil War II: Kingpin mini-series, Wilson Fisk is getting this new ongoing title from Marvel. Be here at the start as Fisk begins building a brand-new empire! Unfortunately, building – or rebuilding – Rome didn’t happen in a day and Fisk has all kinds of roadblocks in his way.

First off, he’s got an image problem. All Fisk wants, so he says, is to be atop an industrial empire that extends its reach worldwide, but when you’re known as a giant in New York’s criminal community you have to change hearts not just break bones. Fortunately, Fisk has a plan in Matthew Rosenberg (Civil War II: Kingpin, Rocket Raccoon, We Can Never Go Home) and Ben Torres’ (Knight Watchmen) new series from Marvel Comics hitting Forbidden Planet’s shelves this week!

Fisk hires Sarah Dewey, a journalist with no other options, as his public relations agent. She expects to have to write the press releases and arrange interviews with the media but creating a paragon of virtue out of a former criminal mastermind will not be as easy as it seems (wait, that doesn’t seem easy at all, does it?). Being drawn into a world of ambition and greed, where the lines blur between right and wrong, where trust is weakness and betrayal is common, what lines will she cross to achieve her own goals?

For fans of shows like House of Cards and Breaking Bad, turn your eyes to Kingpin #1 as the start of Wilson Fisk’s next epic saga begins NOW!

Batman Assembles The JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: REBIRTH #1

This New Comic Book Day welcome back one of DC’s premiere superhero teams!

A new dawn is rising on the Justice League of America. Spinning out of the events chronicled in Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad comes a team under the Justice League banner unlike any other. Don’t think so? Try these names on for size: Batman (makes sense), Black Canary (okay, been on the team before, sure), Killer Frost (what?), the Ray, (What?), Vixen (phew), the Atom (now you’re talking), and…Lobo?!?!?! You thought Lex Luthor put a few wrinkles into the team dynamic during the New 52, see what happens when the Main Man has to play nice with others. Who’s causing all this? Apparently, Batman. What’s he thinking? Find out in this issue as the Dark Knight assembles what DC is proclaiming to be the roughest and toughest Justice League of all-time.

After the events of Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad and four one-shots in January bringing you up to speed on the Atom, the Ray, Vixen, and Killer Frost, Steve Orlando (Midnighter & Apollo) and Ivan Reis (Justice League, Aquaman, Green Lantern) set the stage for this sensational roster. What does the future for this team hold? I have no idea but it’s likely to be anything but boring.

If you’ve been waiting for the next big thing when it comes to DC’s team books, you might have just found it. And you’ll find it on the shelves at Forbidden Planet for just $2.99 this Wednesday. Justice For All! But seriously, Lobo?!?!?

“The Truth” Shall Set Her Free in WONDER WOMAN #15

WW15cover_CMYK

This week we put the spotlight on DC Comics’ reigning and defending Amazonian Princess!

WONDER WOMAN has been an unstoppably great series since Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott, and Liam Sharp took over the direction of the character for her Rebirth. This week in WONDER WOMAN #15 the next arc and best jumping on point for new readers hits our shelves with “THE TRUTH” part one.

After the events of  “THE LIES” Diana has finally seen the full scope of how her life and history have been transformed…unfortunately, the knowledge has fractured her mentally and emotionally, leaving the character ripe for rebuilding to be more badass than ever. Like Frank Miller executed with Daredevil in “BORN AGAIN” and Jeff Lemire with Green Arrow in “THE KILL MACHINE”, sometimes the best way to take your hero to new heights is to bring them to their lowest point first. Diana certainly seems like she’s at rock bottom.

All of us at Forbidden Planet cannot wait to see how she climbs her way out as Rucka’s long-game takes a grander and more epic shape this week. If for some reason you haven’t fallen down the Amazonian rabbit hole, then by the goddess now’s the perfect time to jump in for only $2.99!

The Joker is back in these stories from BATMAN #35-40! For years, The Joker has regarded Batman with a sick, twisted love. But now, the Clown Prince of Crime is done playing. He’s going to kill Batman. And he’s going to do it using those whom Batman loves the most: the Justice League.
