Matt D is Furious!

Special thanks to Scarecrow Video for making this screening possible!Video introduction from director Tim Everitt!

Reality is the enemy. We escape into movies and books and comics and our homicidal fantasies because the world we live in isn’t as satisfying as it should be. Occasionally, one of these fictional destinations proves to be so uniquely exciting that we never want to leave. FURIOUS is one of those places; an unexplored dimension populated by cackling sorcerers, whispering statues, fat adolescent warriors and lots and lots of live chickens. FURIOUS is power. It’s magic. It’s a kaleidoscopic siege on the concept of storytelling. And FURIOUS is “RED HOT KARATE ACTION! Filmed entirely on location in Southern California!” FURIOUS has no right to exist. But it does. There’s no fathoming its creation. It’s a movie with 10,000 ideas but zero story; impossible ambition coupled with the desire to alienate anyone watching. Filming a feature on 35mm is expensive, and so is interdimensional travel, or a giant, fire-breathing dragon with entire human skeletons between its teeth. But FURIOUS laughs off these challenges. Money is no object when reality is no option. The only remaining explanation is that it sprang fully formed from some spiritual and intellectual void, a starving chasm of chaotic darkness that feeds off the shock and confusion of human viewers. So feed it. FEED IT. (Zack Carlson, via Bleeding Skull)

Horror Boobs presents The Abomination @ Alamo Drafthouse

Join those vidiots Horror Boobs once again, 8PM this Wednesday July 2nd at Alamo Drafthouse Yonkers for a VHS screening of Bret McCormick’s monster mash The Abomination! Oh yeah, and tickets are only a buck!

ABOMINATION

Prepare to puke! Shot on Super 8mm in Poolville, Texas and crammed with neon barf, disembowelments, and ambitious latex monsters, THE ABOMINATION is a benchmark in D.I.Y. trash-gore insanity. Cody lives with his mom in a wood-paneled shack. Mom devotes her life to shady evangelist Brother Fogg. Mom hacks up a tumor. The tumor infects Cody. He coughs one up, too. Soon, the tumors multiply. They infect the entire house and take form as The Abomination — a bloody vagina monster that hides in a washing machine and tears people in half! With no ties to rational thought, THE ABOMINATION falls somewhere between the calculated gross-out of STREET TRASH and the hallucinogenic dream-world of H.G. Lewis’s THE WIZARD OF GORE. This movie heaves with mismatched post-dubbing, constant jump cuts, and tape-manipulated synthesizers until it EXPLODES with the stench of wet cow intestines, burning Bibles, and pissed jeans. It’s psychedelic anxiety, 1980s style. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

Tickets only $1! Hosted by Matt Desiderio (Horror Boobs) and Mike Hunchback (Seminal Psychosis).

Bring your tapes! We’ll be set up for a tape trade, with rare VHS tapes also available for sale.

Get warped with Matt D

8PM Wednesday June 11th at Alamo Drafthouse NYC Area, Forbidden Planet’s very own Matt D hosts a VHS screening of Demonwarp.

demonwarp

Don’t miss the best “Zombie Sasquatches from Space” movie you will see all year! Oh yeah and tickets are only ONE BUCK!

George Kennedy is enjoying a game of Trivial Pursuit when Bigfoot breaks into his house and kills his daughter. Then a group of Bigfoot trackers (including Billy Jacoby from JUST ONE OF THE GUYS) set up shop in the same cabin. Sex! Practical jokes! Bigfoot wearing an Axl Rose wig! George Kennedy calls Bigfoot a “wooly bastard” and a “six-foot fleabag,” but that doesn’t stop the mythical beastoid from messing around with dynamite and REMOVING PEOPLE’S HEADS. Before you know it, DEMONWARP transforms from a movie about Bigfoot decapitating people to a movie about dimestore zombies, wet alien puppets, satanic sacrifices, and 1980s scream queen Michelle Bauer roaming around with no clothes on. Why is all of this happening? Your guess is as good as ours. But it probably has something to do with a zombie who does impressions of Jack Nicholson and a time-traveling spaceship. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

Tickets only $1! Hosted by Matt Desiderio (Horror Boobs) and Mike Hunchback (Seminal Psychosis).

Bring your tapes! We’ll be set up for a tape trade, with rare VHS tapes also available for sale.

GOREMET

The year is 1386. A group of wizards called “The Ancient Order” place a curse on a guy named Goza. Cut to 1986. Goza is now the proprietor of Goza’s Deli & Beach Club, which is a front for chopping off people’s body parts and eating them. Goza also enjoys dance parties with nude women, as long as they’re dancing to a rip-off of ELO’s “Don’t Bring Me Down.” At one point, Goza screams, “DON’T CHASTISE ME!” to someone, which leads to a showdown with The Ancient Order in a suburban park. There are hooded sweatshirts and invisible force fields. Goza may survive the ordeal, but will he survive the final showdown with a priestess who looks like Pat Benatar? GOREMET ZOMBIE CHEF FROM HELL reeks of weed, Doritos, and old Reebok high-tops in the best of ways. It was made by adults on Super 8, but most likely influenced by ninth-graders playing Dungeons & Dragons while watching EVIL DEAD. Plus it’s only 67 minutes. Bonus! (Joseph A. Ziemba)

Tickets only $1! Hosted by Matt Desiderio and Mike Hunchback of Horror Boobs.

Bring your tapes! Tapes for trade and sale courtesy of Horror Boobs.

Why do people keep making movies about Marvel super-heroes when the best one already exists? A maniacal psychopath known as Spider-Man is on a crime spree. He steals golden statues, attacks strippers in strip clubs, and murders people with shower nozzles, speedboat motors, and guinea pigs. In addition, Spider-Man’s bushy eyebrows pop through his mask-holes and he prefers a switchblade over web-shooters. Naturally, the legendary super-hero team of Captain America and El Santo are called in to take care of business. AND THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS. Upside down drop kicks in karate dojos! Fistfights on top of speeding cars! Spider-Man’s ability to clone himself at will (and often)! With non-stop fights and a total disregard for logic, this movie illustrates the proper way to realize the dreams of a thirteen-year-old without spending two hundred bazillion dollars doing it. At one point, Spider-Man and his girlfriend make love through his costume. Three puppets show up and start laughing. By the way, this movie is Turkish. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

Something Weird @ MAD Museum 6/9/12 7PM

Believe it or not all my rambling about VHS has paid off! The Museum of Art and Design, Jake Yuzna, Rebecca Cleman and I (Matthew Desiderio) have put together the mother of all VHS tributes with screenings, workshops, and a real functioning video store on site.

VHS at MAD takes places between June 9th and August 18th.

Museum of Art and Design is located at 2 Columbus Circle, New York, NY 10019

Come see VHS get its due respect at the MAD Museum in NYC! The Museum of Art and Design has allowed the likes of VHShitfest, Horror BoobsLunchmeat Vhs Fanzine and more to present films of the VHS era that are dear to their hearts. Experience rare SOV classics like Hellroller and Tales From The Quadead Zone on the big screen, come to a live work out session dictated by the weirdest fitness videos in existence, or come and rent a copy of Jerry Macguire from the pop-up rental store. VHS makes anything possible and this is proof so don’t miss this chance to be a part of VHiStory!

In celebration of the influential medium known as VHS, the Museum of Arts and Design presents a three-month survey of the short-lived video revolution. VHS screenings include a wide array of VHS offerings, including rare genre films, bootleg rock concert videos, independent works by the likes of Todd Haynes, Troma Video, and Nam June Paik, live workout classes by Richard Simmons and Susan Powter, and lost public access gems. In honor of its VHS series, MAD has also recreated a video rental store within its walls. In its exploration of the mutliple facets of the format, VHS demonstrates the impact of this technology on the history of cinema.

What beter way to kick it all of this Friday June 9th at 7PM than with a screening of the H.G. Lewis classic Something Weird screened from a special composite tape containing Something Weird Video trailers, a Joe Bob Briggs intro and outro from The Sleaziest Movies in the History of the World tape, and more!  And who better to present it than my good buddy, Horror Culture Enthusiasts and lover of Something Weird: Mike Hunchback.

Something Weird
1967, Dir. Herschell Gordon Lewis
With Tony McCabe, Elizabeth Lee, and William Brooker

Directed by cult icon Herschell Gordon Lewis, Something Weird brings together a uncanny plot including LSD, psychic phenomena, a grotesque witch who can morph into a beautiful young woman, a kung fu socialite, ghosts, federal agents, psychopaths, and much more. A standout work from the midcentury exploitation and underground film movement, Something Weird was nearly lost until the distribution company Something Weird Video was founded in 1990, taking both its name and its logo from the film.

Something Weird Video released numerous Gordon Lewis films, as well as many other exploitation films, European genre films, and forgotten classics. Taking advantage of the video market formed by VHS, Something Weird Video and other likeminded distributors originated a curatorial approach that championed cinematic works through VHS release and video store selections. By doing so, these companies gave new life to cinematic oddities that pushed boundaries in both their subject matter and their approach to narrative filmmaking.

Special introduction by Mike Hunchback, Horror Culture Enthusiast and curator of Hershel Gordon Lewis and Frank Henenlotter retrospective.

So put everything else on pause and come out to one of the many VHS events at the MAD Museum!
