On Saturday March 16th at 6pm Forbidden Planet is throwing a DVD launch party for James Balsamo’s new horror movie COOL AS HELL. Director James Balsamo (Hack Job, I Spill You Guts)and the Acid Bath Production Crew will be in store for signings, as well as the other stars of the film Carmine Capobianco (I Spill Your Guts, Psychos In Love) and Frank Mullen (I Spill Your Guts, Singer of Suffocation)! And if that wasn’t enough for you greedy horror movie fanatics there is going to be a contest to get KILLED (in James’s new movie “Mystery Meat”). Don’t miss the chance to be caught on celluloid in all the glory gore.
OH, and did we mention that a scene in “Cool As Hell” was shot INSIDE of Forbidden Planet? And our very own Matt D plays a very smarmy comic shop employee. Doesn’t sound like him at all right….
Don’t miss this one folks its going to be Horrortastic.
Forgot to post these new Google+ Hangout videos from last week.
Here’s Matt and Alec talking Sons of Anarchy, WWE, NYCC, re-creating telephone calls Alec receives from customers, Just Us League MAD toys and a whole lot more…
And here’s me from my desk… “Haven’t even had time since the move to put pictures of my kids here. I don’t have kids, but if I did that’s where they’d go.” I’m paraphrasing of course. The gyst is I really want you to check out and enjoy the works of Julia Wertz and Theo Ellsworth.
Got 28 minutes of your life to spend on Matt and I talking new arrivals, Happy #1, Space Punisher, crappy old Image Comics, movies, Star Trek the Next generation, comic cons, Mark Hamill and Corvette Summer? Like hearing me say “um?” Have I got a video for you!
Sorry if it’s a little dark this week. Better light next time. Oh, and there’s a slight technical glitch (about 8 seconds) when we start talking about Happy #1. Stick with it.
Next LIVE broadcast is Friday the 28th at 7pm.
Some goofs on our first take. The store’s wi-fi cut out for about five minutes, thus making us late for the 4pm Hangout On Air. We missed a chance to have a prominent celebrity customer join us because of the delay in setting back up, and I still have a lot to learn about the minutiae of running these…
Still, Matt and I got it together and streamed the following, LIVE on a laptop to our Google+ and Youtube pages. The FPNYCTV Television network is on the air…
And about the Twitter and Facebook cards… Okay. Didn’t realize the audience could read ‘em just fine. I can be a real dummy sometimes.
Next show Friday 9/14/12 at 7pm from the floor of the new FP.
On May 24th, Forbidden Planet NYC played host to the crazy crew from Troma to celebrate the limited Big Box VHS release of the original Toxic Avenger! Llyod Kaufman, Troma founder and the man behind such classics as Nuke ‘Em High and Tromeo and Juliet, was on hand to sign posters, chat with fans, and pass out yummy cupcakes!
Check out what you missed if you couldn’t make it, and long live VHS!
Well, you’ve all heard the news. Shia LaBeouf made two mini-comics. I can’t remember the last time a mini-comic has made quite a stir. Well, Dan takes a look at Mr. LaBeouf’s first foray into the land of mini-comics, as well all of the latest mainstream comics to come into the store. Plus the latest zine from one of our assistant managers; Matt D.; and the latest mini-comic from your humble cameraman/director/graphic designer/me! All this, and info on this coming Monday’s in-store signing and a shout out to this weekend’s SPACE convention in Ohio!
Up until fairly recent I was only vaguely familiar with Ito’s work, mostly from the live action adaptation of Uzumaki and seeing his name on various books in the store. That is until I picked up Gyo. Immediately blown away by every aspect of it I’ve been rabidly devouring any of his stuff that I can find. The setup is simple yet so original and unforgettable… Fish grow legs, come out of the water and start taking over the land. Now I’m not talking about smart talking fish people devising a world conquering plan. I’m talking about a massive amount of stupid fish, all types of fish, small fish, big fish, red fish… you get it…fish with legs that simply force the humans out due to strength in numbers and stench for that matter.
After getting about half way through the first volume I began to wonder why this was never adapted into a live action film like some of Ito’s other work like Uzumaki and the Tomie series. I’ll settle for an animated version, but hopefully it generates enough interest for a live action Gyo.
Seriously though who wouldn’t want to see a real land shark!
This Saturday night check out the new animated short by Forbidden Planet’s very own Josh Weisbrod.
Josh’s new short How top Talk to Women will be playing at the Audience Choice Screenings for the 8th Annual NYC Downtowm Short Film Festival. It’s all going down this Saturday May 21st at 8PM at Duo Theater 62 East 4th Street Manhattan between 2nd ave and Bowery.

This past Sunday I had the pleasure of being a guest on my favorite cult movie podcast, Junk Food Dinner! I know I’ve been talking about them a lot lately, but they’re great guys and I really support their cause.
I brought Psychos In Love (which I also recently talked about, get used to it) to the table, and to my surprise nobody on the show had seen it before.
Click the image below to go directly to the podcast.
Junk Food Dinner is ready to party- with you! This week Mr. Matt D. from Forbidden Planet joins us for the show. So settle in as we kick things off with Gorman Bechard and Carmine Capobianco’s hilariously-gory-romantic-splatterfest Psychos in Love from 1987. Up next we sink our claws into (and nearly expose ourselves to the potential risk of seziures) 2004′s Cutie Honey. Finally, some people you may have heard of from other movies take part in the source of a lifelong nightmare of Parker’s when we take a look at Invaders from Mars from 1986.
(Don’t forget! If you’re in NYC today (3/1/11) come to Project Parlor in Bed-Stuy (742 Myrtle Ave.) for Junk Food Dinner and Project Parlor Present hosted by Mark Freado, Jr. and Kevin Merryman! Starting at 9PM!)
Thanks a bunch for having me on guys, it was a total blast!
I figured it’s time to start some reoccurring blog entries. So how about a tattoo tribute search, and who better to start with than everyone’s favorite merc with a mouth… Deadpool! So if you got an awesome Deadpool tattoo post it in the comments. I myself am tattooless (still hoping to be buried in a Jewish cemetery) so unfortunately I can’t post any examples of my own, but here’s some some great Deadpool tattoos I found on the web.
Headpool from Deadpool Fan Links.
Deadpool Vs Wolverine from a Flickr Superhero tattoo group.
Deadpool Vs Wolverine (Again?) from Comic Vine.
Boobpool… look how the blade accentuates this guys muscle! Found on Deviant Art.
Here’s my personal favorite… Lip-pool! Also found on Deviant Art, check out this girls pictures while you’re at it. She’s got a great one of her cosplaying (love that word) as Marvel Comic’s Domino!
So there you have it… my first tattoo tribute post, isn’t it fascinating what people will put on their bodies FOREVER! So please post your Deadpool tattoos and stay tuned for more Tattoo Tributes!
March 1st is a red letter day for us here at JFD. It’s the first (of hopefully many) Junk Food Dinner nights at Project Parlor (742 Myrtle Ave.) in Bed-Stuy. Your charming hosts for this event are Mark Freado, Jr. and Kevin Merryman. Drink specials, trivia, drinking games, bickering, peanuts, couches, VHS prints- what’s not to like? We’re gonna kick things off at 9pm. Join us won’t you?
They’re showing Luigi Cozzi’s Starcrash, a mixed up Italian Star Wars rip off, starring Caroline Munro, David Hasselhoff and Joe Spinell… it’s like Maniac meets Knight Rider in space!
And Ice Cream Man starring Clint Howard as a killer… wait for it… Ice Cream Man. Directed by Paul Norman of Edward Penishands fame. Yes, you heard me right…
Hope to see you there.
