Magic the Gathering’s new set, Dragon’s Maze, releases today. Let’s check it out:
The plane of Ravnica is home to ten ancient two-color guilds. Return to Ravnica showed off five of those guilds: the white-blue Azorius, the blue-red Izzet, the black-red Rakdos, the black-green Golgari, and the green-white Selesnya. Gatecrash featured the other five: the white-black Orzhov, the blue-black Dimir, the red-green Gruul, the red-white Boros, and the green-blue Simic. Now, for the first time, all ten guilds come together as they search for the solution to the magical enigma known as the Implicit Maze.
Dragon’s Maze features 156 black-bordered cards, including randomly inserted premium versions of all cards in the set. Dragon’s Maze is available in booster packs, intro packs, and fat packs.
More info on this set can be found here. We are FULLY stocked as I write this, so come on by the shop or order online while supply lasts!

My hat is off to IDW, as they are truly showing the other companies what it means to publish comics in the new millennium. They publish the most mainstream of mainstream titles, but find the coin to get the nicest, small interest art books on the shelves to boot. They have all the prestige of a small boutique press, but are shameless in their high profile licenses.
If I went back in time twenty years and told you (if you were alive, and demographically speaking that is a safe bet) that ONE COMPANY would have the licensing rights to ALL of the following titles, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Crow, Godzilla, G.I. Joe, and Magic the Gathering, you would swear I was lying…and those are just the titles they’re shipping this week!
And True Blood, which I omitted as nobody from twenty years ago knew what the heck that was.
NOW keep in mind that IDW is also publishing Frankenstein Alive, Alive! #2, the sequel to Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein (arguably one of the best rendered fantasy art stories of our time) as well as putting out beautiful, Artist edition reprints of Bernie Wrightson’s Muck Monster AND Sergio Aragone’s Groo and you can begin to see the bigger picture.
Get on board the IDW love fest and drink the IDW Kool-Aid! Continue reading
HUMONGOUS weekend coming up for the good and geeky. A little movie called The Avengers hits American screens tomorrow, Free Comic Book Day is Saturday the 5th, and all weekend long gamers will be feverishly ripping open packs of Magic the Gathering packs in the hope of pulling a Terminus or a Temporal Mastery.
The Magic packs they’ll be opening will, of course, be Avacyn Restored, releasing here at Forbidden Planet NYC tomorrow at 10a.m. Fat packs, intro decks, booster packs, playmats… a veritible smorgasbord of Avacyn product will be available, the full list of which you can see here.
And as a special thank you to our in-store MTG customers we’re offering Avacyn Restored booster boxes at $5 off our regular price the entire weekend.
Suicide Squad #8, out NEXT week from DC, BETTER clear up these rumors I’ve been hearing about a certain demise within that team’s roster. Hopefully we’ll be seeing one of the chief stars of that title return from the tomb toot-sweet, as audiences stop paying for shows that fail to star their main attractions. I’d say Johnny Storm of the FF wins for “Quickest attention grabbing death undone to regain readers,” except this is Easter Weekend and any mention of this subject seems sacrilegious.
Speaking of dates, and I don’t mean “those-things-I-don’t-go-on-because-I’m-playing-Minecraft.”
PAX East is THIS upcoming weekend, as is Anime Con Boston, proving once again that business people have as much foresight as a flounder. Anyone want to make a lot of money this weekend in the Bay State? Just rent a party van, throw in a Magic: The Gathering table and a flatscreen that plays Full Metal Alchemist DVDs, then charge ten bucks a ride to ferry folks between the two events. Repeat until rich enough to buy tickets to the San Diego Comic Con this year on July 12-15.
I can remember the years when the MoCCA Art Fest, unfortunately, fell on the same weekend as The Mermaid Day Parade. Luckily, MoCCA is right around the corner on Saturday and Sunday, April 28th and the 29th, while the Mermaid Parade is in June. It is poor timing that the New York Convention for Gluing Broken Tiles to Light Posts will happen during MoCCA, but I think that’s only going to throw off a handful off attendees to both. These are a highly specialized group of people, and are used to such hardships.
Free Comic Book Day will be on the first Saturday of May, as always, which this year will fall on May 5th …as sad conflict with The New York Comic Con, which will be on October 11-14. I say it’s a conflict because some of this year’s books are looking so good, I’ll still be reading them by the time October comes around!
I kid, I kid. I can’t actually read, I just like to look at the pictures.
Adventure Time #2 will look cool intentionally, if not casually, flopping out of the back pocket of a well scruffed pair of vintage, acid washed jeans. Action Comics #8 will close out the latest weird arch on Grant Morrison’s run on the Man of Steel…and speaking of Grant:
AS MENTIONED LAST WEEK, NOW is your chance to own the spectacular Flex Mentallo Hard Cover, reprinting for the first time the original collaboration between Morrison and Quitely that’s been out of print since 1996. Get it before Charles Atlas’ lawyers realize they’re letting people have fun and DC gets sued again! Continue reading
Drama! Controversy! Comics! Dramictroversy! Dan goes over the latest and greatest comics in this week’s haul, plus the bru-ha-ha surrounding Kevin Keller‘s nuptials! If you’d like to show your support for comic that provide realistic (and super-realistic!) depictions of the gay experience, there’s a whole host of great comics to choose from!
Today is the official release of the new Magic the Gathering set, Dark Ascension. To celebrate we’re selling the first booster packs of this block, Innistrad, at a cool $2.75 per booster pack on today’s DAILY DEALS (valid in-store and online).
We’ll also being giving away Dark Ascension product all weekend! As of this writing there’s about one hour left to retweet this message to enter to win a FREE MTG: DA Fat Pack, so get a move on. There will also be contests throughout the weekend, so keep an eye on our Twitter feed.
So, today’s title is pretty self explanatory, oh yeah, manga is first on the block, followed by Magic: The Gathering, which I know isn’t exactly anime related like you guys are used to reading in my columns, but hey, this is the Manga and Gaming department up here on the second floor of Forbidden Planet NYC, I have a little bit of a duty to go on about whatever I deem necessary. Besides, to be perfectly frank, there are only a hand full of manga titles coming in this week, and I doubt I could fill this entire article with the stuff that is arriving. So, big names first. Much to my surprise and amazement, Akira Volume 3 by Kodansha Books is showing up this week. Yeah, despite the 8 month wait between the first and second volumes, the third comes very briefly after number 2. I guess they are trying to catch up. Sweet.
Speaking of reprints, two of the other titles in our little handful of books this week are the VizBig editions of Dragon Ball Z Volume 8, and Vagabond Volume 8. I have to say as I’m writing this, if each of these things is 3 books in one, I’m not entirely sure how the Dragon Ball Z one is going to work out. Technically the 8th volume would bring you up to book 24, but there are only 26 in total, so either 8 will the final book and be super thick, or they’ll put out 9 and it will be a bit slimmer than its predecessors. But I digress. Continue reading

I know all you loyal Shibuya-Cho readers out there look forward to the weekly manga and anime updates, but this week something special came up, and being the guy upstairs, I felt this time we needed to share the love…and article space.
Anyway, if you haven’t guessed by now, (due to the subtle title change of this weeks article), Magic The Gathering is releasing the first set of their new block this week. Zendikar is going to be wild. If you haven’t already been scanning the web for visual spoilers, the artwork alone is pretty amazing, especially the mana art. The art for each of the mana is so wild they actually decided to print 2 versions of each mana card. The regular format versions you’ll get in the intro packs, but the new “full-art” format mana will only be available in the fat packs and that occasional mana you’ll find in a booster pack.
Fat packs are going to include all the usual swag, 8 booster packs, 40 mana, 1 D20 life counter, a card box with pretty art, more pretty art, and the sample book of Path of the Planeswalker which is the webcomic series from the Magic the Gathering website. Continue reading
