Chris’ Comics: The Goddamned #3

The Goddamned is a great comic to review because every issue offers something worth examining. After the first 2 issues, both which I’ve enjoyed thoroughly, I was afraid that Kain and Aga were going to go down the cliche route of Savior and Damsel. While some of that still rings true, issue 3 shows some much needed development for both characters, as Jason Aaron and r.m. Guera do some much need character growth in this issue.

While the man who invented murder (again, such a fantastic title) is a fun lead, Kain hasn’t been one we the reader could get behind. It risked the character being a bit 2 dimensional, but this issue steers away from that by looking us several glimpses at Kain’s past. The flashback involving his parents (Adam and Eve in case your Biblical knowledge is rusty or lacking) is great for fleshing out the character, given us a much needed moment of humor and allowing Guera to draw something pleasant for a minute. Eden under r.m and 002goddamned03jpgcolorist Giulia Brusco is gorgeous and by giving us a quick look at paradise, it shows up how far the world has fallen.

And while it may be hard to look at, the look and design of the world of The Goddamned is gorgeous in it’s own twisted way. I’ve compared it to those old timey Prince Valiant/ Sunday Comics strips, but I’m seeing some Dr. Seuss influence in this month’s issue when it comes to the designs of the newly introduced Night Raiders. Maybe it’s a combination of the exaggerated faces with the bright colors of their eyes, but I’m reminded of the ol’ Chuck Jones “Horton Hears a Who!” TV special. Yes, I’m ancient, this has been established. Either way, I love the look of this book, from it’s malformed characters, to detail backgrounds to “exotic” wildlife. Guera and Brusco deserve like 20 Eisners for the art in this book.

Going back to Jason Aaron, I like how restrained he is in this issue. For the most part, he lets the spectacular art tell the story, which is a smart move given the quality. It also makes the dialogue feel all the more important, not to mention informative. There’s a lot of cool bait and switching in this issue, rarely for the greater good, and I dig the hell out of it. Also I love the choice of fonts Jared K. Fletcher uses for the dialogue, which really feel primitive and biblical, for a better lack of proper adjective.

The Goddamned is definitely the most brutal and old school Vertigo-feeling comic out on the shelves today. Issue 3 is a reminder of how this creative first took off, and as a reader, I couldn’t be any more thrilled to have it. The final pages tease at something very interesting, and I’m curious to see how it all plays out given the type of person Kain is. The Goddamned is a comic that I didn’t really mind being a month or so late, because every issue has been a epic in itself.

I really wish this review was just me giggling inappropriately. Granted it would be the vaguest review, it would also be my cutest. Or creepiest I guess, depending on your perspective. Either way I should start doing video reviews for this blog.

The Goddamned #2 is more of the same insanity as issue 1 was, which is the breed of bonkers I love from my comics. This issue is split between Jason Aaron & r.m. Gueras take on Noah and his clan, and Kain, who stumbles across the distraught mother trope. There’s a lot for me to like in there 20 pages, even though it kind of stinks that the first female character we’re introduced to is a damsel in distress of sorts.

The-Goddamned-2-preview-mjmplajmuwohka5h64nauee8jtjzd0vdfa13tw2p1oNoah was introduced in the final pages of issue 1, and this issue sees him a little more fleshed out. Aaron and Guera’s Garth Ennis influence shines here, as we see Noah portrayed as a  righteous religious man who fully believes in carry out God’s work, just in the most violent of manners. He’s a fascinating character, and given his history, I’m excited to see his story play out.  A shame the same can’t be said for said female characte,r who doesn’t even get a name this issue.

While I’m less than pleased with how the book’s only female character is handled in the Kain portion of the book, I love what Guera and Aaron do with the character in this issue. While Kain throws down with a new tribe of foes, Aaron recalls the various methods Kain has tried killing himself. It walks to the line between ridiculous and tragic, because we feel for Kain in a way, but he’s also the dude solely responsible for the way the world is. I do appreciate Aaron and Guera finally giving the readers a reason to get behind Kain as a lead, and how they manage to let the reader know how bad the world is strictly from dialogue and visual cues.

Aside from the great narration and dialogue from Aaron, we get some fantastic stuff from the art team of this issue. Jared K Fletcher‘s choice of fonts really give the book a Prince Valiant/ old timey look, which I dig for a biblical action book.  It pairs well with the colors The-Goddamned-2-2015-Page-22used by Giulia Bruscowhich give the book a nice painted look. And of course r.m. Guera is fantastic. I like the various body type he uses for the book’s cast, especially when so many fantasy type stories only stick or two or 3. He really does a fantastic job of creating a sick and twisted world, while drawing some fine dinosaurs, and uses dark black inks to invokes shadows in some interesting wats. He also shines when it comes to drawing the action pieces in this issue, creating some really brutal art that hard too look directly art, but gorgeous in it’s own way none the less.

The Goddamned is pretty much everything I wanted from the team who gave us Scalped. It’s a violent fantasy book with a killer hook, and small but intriguing cast. Given what we know about the Bible & the Old Testament, we have a rough idea on how this whole thing is going to play out, but it’s fascinating none the less. Guera and Aaron managed to create a captivating narrative quickly, and with Brusco and Fletcher, and visual style that blend European style comics with some Games of Thrones level violence. It’s a book I can’t recommend enough if you want something a little more brutal from Image.

With Image Comics putting out new hit IP after new hit IP, comparsions to 90s Vertigo Comics have popped up. For all you younger readers, 90s Vertigo was the business, giving us such excellent comics like Preacher, Sandman, The Invisibles, and some hella fine Hellblazer comics. There were some really groundbreaking titles coming out from the DC imprint, which helped launched the careers of a ton of amazing creators, but what really won over TEEN Chris was the profanity, violence and nudity, aka things I wasn’t seeing in whatever Spider-Clone comic I was buying at the time. TEEN Chris did not have the best logic when it came to buy good comics back then folks, the Joe Kelly Deadpool run aside.

The current Image renaissance has given readers a plethora of wonderful comics, but none of their acclaimed titles really scratched that ultra violence Vertigo itch for me. Oh sure a lot of these titles are arguably better made comics (hi Saga), but sometimes you don’t want 169021_764322_4_1a deep, thought provoking comic. Sometimes you just want blood , profanity and a generous helping of profanity.

Thankfully, two creators who have some Vertigo experience under their belts finally published a book through Image that’s exactly what I’m talking about. The Goddamned is the first creator owned worked by superstar writer Jason Aaron and ultra-talented artist r.m. Guera since they wrapped up their acclaim run on Scalped. The Goddamned is a Conan meets The Old Testament type comic, in which Cain, the “man who invented murder” wanders a forsaken planet not unlike Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star. It is a concept that is VERY MUCH my jam,and Jason Aaron should get an award of some sorts just for that bit about Cain inventing murder that I quoted.

The Goddamned is a bizarre high concept book that I was sold on immediately when it was announced this past summer at the Image Expo. It’s been some like 1600 or 1700  years since the fall of Eden, and Cain is forced to walk a truly evil earth as an immortal. This first issue gives us the basic premise, introduces Cain as a lone wolf badass, and gives us a TON of brutal fight scenes. While it’s an extremely violent book, Guera’s style never review-image-comics-the-goddamned-1_1really glorifies it, and the brutality never got to me thanks to his over the top, animated style. It’s very much in the spirit of Marvel’s old Conan the Barbarian comic, only with a hard R rating.

Jason Aaron’s dialogue would do Preacher-era Garth Ennis proud. There’s some choice dialogue that may offend any religious folk, but it absolutely delighted me. Aaron does not attempt to go with any sort of period accuracy for this book, which is fine, because this dude is at his best when he’s telling revenge stories with a violent lead. And I like how he doesn’t try to justify Cain’s past actions as any given point, which makes me wonder if the book will actually have a likable protagonist as any given point.

The Goddamned was a book I was very much hyped for, and it delivered on ever level. The art from r.m. Guera and colorist Giulia Brusco is ugly in the best ways, and Jason Aaron’s dialogue is Dirty Harry cranked up to 11. It’s the type of comic I missed reading, and final page is some Brian K Vaughan level of cliffhanger. If you don’t mind your comics on the violent side, pick up the Goddamned immediately.

Review: Wolverine & The X-Men Volume 8

Ever since Days of Future Past dropped a few weeks back, I’ve been reading a lot of older X-Men comics these days. The Chris Claremont era is considered by many as  the golden age of X-Men, and up until this summer, I had only read the Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, and a bunch of stuff involving Arcade, because I’m the type of dude who likes Arcade. So I fired up the ol’ Marvel Digital App and decided to do some summer reading.

I’m definitely digging what Claremont, David Cockrum, John Byrne and Paul Smith have done with the X-Men and all the drama and high stake action that ensued. But there’s a lot fun and light hearted characters moments in those issues as well, which I really like. Which is why I think is one of the reasons I’ve really dug what Jason Aaron’s done on Wolverine and the X-Men.  Aaron’s chose to channel the more fun and insane of Claremont’s X-Men run, and it makes for a much more different and off beat type of X-Men that what I’m used to.

xmenDon’t get me wrong. The Grant Morrison run of New X-Men is still my favorite era of X-books, but that book was pretty dark most of the time. Unless your idea of fun is psychic affairs, which is only excusable if your name is Emma Frost. Which if it is, please contact me, I have about a dozen or so questions.  Aaron’s WaTXM was a book that wasn’t afraid to take chances, be it bring back and semi-redeem some terrible villains (terrible in the sense of both morality and quality!) or turn Wolverine into a clown in Frankenstein’s monster’s MURDER CIRCUS!

Also if you’re not down with a monster owning a Murder Circus, we can never be friends.

wolverine_3The  final volume of Aaron’s run tells 2 tales: the A plot involving the students of the Jean Grey Academy befriending two new students who are secretly spies reporting to Mystique. The B plot involves Wolverine investing the idea of SHIELD producing mutant hunting Sentinels, which brings him face to face with Cyclops, whom he hasn’t been on the best of terms with in forever, despite the fact that CYCLOPS WAS RIGHT! #biased. In addition to those stories, Aaron wraps up a few other lingering plot lines of the junior X-Men graduate into full fledge X-Men, in a cute story that MORE IMPORTANTLY involves Doop vs Nazi Bees. Or and there’s an Infinity tie in annual starring Kid Gladiator drawn by Nick Bradshaw that a fun done in one that really showcases how in sync theses 2 creators are with each other. Plus Kid Glad has run ins with Bruce Banner and Thor, which goes as exactly as you would hope it would.

Aaron’s scripts are also blessed by some fantastic artists in this final volume. The aforementioned Nick Bradshaw and Chris Bachalo swing by to draw a few pages, as do other returning artists like Ramon Perez and Tim Townsend, but the bulk of this trade is drawn by Pepe Larraz. Larraz’s art reminds me a lot of Alan Davis, only a little more looser and raw. I’m excited to see what he’s capable of in the future with more experience.

wolverine_xmen_1Since Aaron’s departure, Wolverine and the X-men was relaunched under Jason Latour, who’s working with Aaron on “Southern Bastards” for Image. Aside from writing that book, Aaron is still working on Thor: God of Thunder, the Original Sin maxi-event, and recently wrapped up his time with the X-men with the first arc of Amazing X-Men. I haven’t read the new series yeah, but Aaron’s going to be a hard act to follow up on. His run on Wolverine and the X-men was strange and wonderful, and Volume 8 is really a celebration of that. I’m hoping we get to see this side of Jason Aaron again sometime down the road.

I’ll never be successful because I’m not crazy

Jodorowsky’s Dune finally came to Seattle this weekend, and I was painfully inspired by this doc. You basically get an animated Moebius film, in between beautiful H.G. Giger art, and topped with an amazing soundtrack that really feels essentially Dune. I can’t say enough good things about this film. For sci-fi, comic, film fans alike.
I followed the painful inspiration with a weekend of day drinking, nail painting, and reading. My magnum opus won’t be built in a day.

Adventure Time Annual 2014– The thing I love about annuals is that they come out once a year. They’re also bigger. They feature a new creative team. And sometimes they’re Adventure Time. Lucky for us, this one hits all those sweet spots. Joining the already extra special AT Team is husband-wife comic duo, Becky and Frank! They write and draw the super adorable webcomic, Tiny Kitten Teeth (that is hand painted, I might add). If you have diabetes you might want to keep a candy bar on hand for this one, because it not only features the sugary cuteness of their typical art style, but the story follows little Fionna and BABY CAKE! The sweetness is in the name! Just thinking about it gets me a little light headed. The two get into all sorts of magical trouble, but who could ever stay mad at a baby Fionna and Cake?!

Buddy Buys a Dump TPB

Continuing the Buddy Bradley series from the collected books of Buddy Does Jersey, and Buddy Does Seattle, comes the first collection we’ve seen from Peter Bagge’s iconic Hate Annual series in seven years! But this newest collected version will also feature new pages created by Bagge; a major contribution to the renaissance Seattle is having right now of its alternative comics scene. Life for the junky, 1990’s famous anti-hero, Buddy Bradley has changed significantly. We find him now in his 30’s, with a wife, son, owning a junkyard, and wearing an eye patch. Pretty normal for Buddy I’d say. This conclusion to his most recent arc will be marked by the 25th anniversary of Hate Comix in 2015. I’d say that time has flown by, and something nostalgic like “I remember when these comics blah blah blah”, but I’ll be honest, Hate came out the year I was born. So I’ve had A LOT of catching up to do.(If you’re interested in the current work of underground Seattle cartoonists, look up the work of Ben Horak, Gnartoons, and Tom Van Deusen in their monthly publication, The Intruder)

Unlovable Vol 3 HC– Grotesquely hilarious, in only the way an illustrated journal of a teenage girl from 1989 can be. Unlovable, by Esther Pearl Watson, is what all of us were at some point in our adolescence, but wishing we never were. Summer is here for Tammy Pierce, and she’s ready to party, flirt with all the boys, and wear waaaaay too much mascara. This is a must read for all Tina Belcher fans. This is also a must read for anyone who likes fun!

Southern Bastards #1– Jason Aaron just made the South real dirty. Dirty with rednecks, piss, and dogs. Craw County is home to all of the above; it’s also home to the meanest sheriff the town has ever seen, and his brutality is the stuff of legend. But it’s very real to his son who has come back to town for the first time in years. His dad is dead, but his brutality lives on in the town, through a new boss who has this football town in his fist, and people running from his terror. While this may not be a welcome home for Earl Tugg, for fans of Aaron’s work on books like Scalped, this feels like we’ve been greeted with open arms. Originally from Alabama himself, this feels really down home Southern. Artist and co-creator, Jason Latour also hails from North Carolina, and these two don’t miss a beat when it comes to creating an atmosphere that’s soiled with too many memories, and too much power.

Judge Dredd Mega-City Two #4– When you combine the most serious man in crime fighting, with two cute animal tour guides to Crimeland that sing rhyming tunes, you get only a piece of the wacky ride that is Judge Dredd Mega City Two. Dredd takes care of some old fashioned boss’s in the amusement park that caters to showing old-fashioned street crime! Sounds like a good time for Dredd and his film crew, until they run into a rogue Judge who turns their world upside down by giving up the law…to help the people. The art is out of control on this issue, and the contrast between the hyper detail of the city and landscape, combined with the cartoonish auxiliary characters gives this book a distinguishing flavor from anything that’s on the shelves today. And this issue definitely satisfies my need for some form of musical theatre.

Pretty Deadly Vol 1 TPB– Prolific author Gabriel Garcia Marquez may have left us, but this world is no less full of magical realism as long as Pretty Deadly is still around. DeConnick and Rios have left a sizeable dent in the comics’ world, following the release of their spaghetti western meets kung-fu epic. If you’re one of the poor souls wandering this wasteland of a planet lost and alone because you haven’t picked this book up yet, now is your chance to feel the swift righteous blade of death’s daughter, Ginny. Her origin is the stuff of legend; a tale that bards sing around a fire. But the wronged always know where to find her.

PLAYING CATCH UP: Wolverine and the X-men volumes 6 & 7

Late 2013/Early 2013 saw the launch/relaunch of several X-men books, leaving Wolverine and the X-men as the longest running X-title in the franchise. The series took a bit of a hit in quality when it was dragged into Avengers vs X-men last year, but since then it’s regained it’s footing and remains one of the quirkiest mainstream comics being published today. With Jason Aaron’s run wrapping up early next year, I’ve decided to recap/review the latest 2 volumes of the series. Also it is freezing outside and the cat’s passed out on my lap so my options are limited at best.

Volume 6 starts off with Wolverine taking a bunch of his students out on a field trip to the Savage Land. For those of you not in the know/ have never played the X-men Arcade Game, the Savage Land is home to dinosaurs, large insects and other various nasty things, because that is what makes for good comics. Dog Logan, Wolverine’s time traveling brother is also here and long story short, he ends up taking control of the class trip and Wolverine’s got to put a stop to that, because he’s kinda evil. There’s also a time-skip issue to end the trade that shows off the Jean Grey School 25 years in the future, which teases a number of things that may or may not come one day. Time traveling and the X-men is not always the most reliable thing.

Ramon Perez is a welcomed addition to the circle of artist’s Jason Aaron has worked with on this title. Some of his younger characters look a little off-model at times, but his environments are extremely well detailed, his incorporation of sound effect into his art is really neat, and there’s a nice level of detail in it as well. It’s kinetic, fluid and unique. It’s a nice fit to main series artist Nick Bradsaw, as it’s very Chris Samnee meets Stuart Immonen in a way. Perez was a great get for the series, and it will be nice to see him wrap up the book in a few months/

2910277.jpeg.size-285_maxheight-285_square-trueVolume 7 sees the teachers and student of the JGS throwdown with new Hellfire Club (introduced back in Aaron’s X-men: Schism mini-event) who employee some classic X-villains like Sabretooth and Mystique. Pasqual Ferry draws the prologue issue and it looks fantastic. It’s more reminiscent of a child’s story book than you’re traditional X-men book, but it totally works. There’s some fantastic use of bright colors on the characters that stand out against dark backgrounds.

Ferry draws a great intro to this trade, and is joined by the returning Nick Bradsaw, who really is the second coming of Art Adams. His pages are packed with an insane amount of detail, some truly odd and grotesque characters designs, and an amazing sense of scale for some blockbuster moments. Considering Bradsaw was once the B-side artist on this title, he’s gone above and beyond to make his mark on this book over the last 2 years, and his presence will be missed once he wraps up his current arc. It’s worth just studying each panel he draws just to see how much he crams in there without it looking messy. Also his Doop is 2nd only to Allred’s and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.

Jason Aaron‘s work on this title has definitely has been nothing short of enjoyable, making this book a ton of fun to read. He does a lot to flesh out the new characters in these issues, and he helps set up some truly awesome fight scenes. Given how many iconic X-men are in this book it’s nice to see the kids getting more screen time than the adults. His X-men-meets-Harry Potter world is a delight, and his use of usually terribly executed in the 90s concepts is odd, but unlike those X-crossovers off old, he pulls it off here. Aaron remains that amongst the drama and violence the X-men are known for, there’s a certain amount of heart is involved in their appeal.

While volume 6 was a certainly a fun and enjoyably romp, volume 7 was probably the best X-saga of the year. It’s fun, exciting and just comics done right. More comics could stand to be less grim and gritty, and Wolverine and the X-men continues to be proof of that.

Troy’s Toys, but with Comics: Triple X Edition

I’ll admit, I’m a little late to this party, mostly because I initially overlooked this title last week. I’m already pulling a ton (2) X-titles on monthly basis, so I figured I could trade wait Amazing. But then I got a free digital code for it, and decided to check it out, because free is great.

With that explained, let’s me start off with saying the Ed McGuinness‘ art is PERFECT in this book. His style, a mixture of classic John Byrne and 90s Capcom, really captures the script well, the character looks iconic and fresh. Also his BAMFS are super cute. The strong inks and colors only improve it, and Amazing is already on par with it’s sister books, which says a lot given the talent attached to those books. It’s nice to see Ed given a chance to work with a writer I really dig, sorry not sorry Jeph Loeb.

Veteran X-writer Jason Aaron‘s script is also flawless, mixing action and comedy for a perfect first issue. Bringing back a beloved fan-favorite character like Nightcrawler is no simple task, but these creators definitely meet and surpass those expectations. With Wolverine and the X-men ending in a few months, Amazing X-men is positioning itself quite well as the heir to the most dynamic X-book on the stands.

Brian Michael Bendis/ Stuart Immonen

Kitty Pryde and the original X-men find themselves in a new school, new uniforms and new classmates this week in ANXM. Fresh from Battle of the Atom, Benis and Immonen use this issue to set up the new status quo, as the X-kids deal with the insanity that’s gone down  over the last few months. This also means an insane amount of drama and a ton of dialogue, which is to be expected from a Bendis-penned X-book.

Stuart Immonen is probably my favorite artist working at Marvel at the moment, as the level of talent he brings to this book is crazy. He’s tasked with drawing an insane amount of X-men, and each of them are unique (well except 2 of the triplets, which is kind of the point) and dynamic, despite most of the issue involved mutants standing around and talking. The new uniforms, something my wife described as Power Rangers-esque, are really neat, although  would have preferred to see Jean in White and Gold instead of White and Green. Apparently I’m a costume fashion snob.

 

Brian Bendis’ script is a very by the numbers talking-heads-Bendis script. Which isn’t a bad thing mind you, as the title is coming off a crossover and needs some time to breathe. It’s just something we see a lot from Bendis. Regardless of what my snark may imply, it’s a cute issue to start off year 2 of ANXM, and I’m excited for the new issue dropping in a few short weeks.

X-men Gold is a one shot in honor of the X-men’s 50th Anniversary, and is basically classic X-men continuity porn.

Let me be honest, if you haven’t read a X-men book before Grant Morrison started writing for the franchise in 2001, this is not the book for you. The “newest” story in this book canon-wise is a Fatal Attractions tie-in/Onslaught prequel. Which kids, are events that happened in the mid 90s. It’s definitely a old-school throwback, and at times, not even a good one, at it comes across a tad sexist and racist depending on the story. And it’s worth noting that at least 14 of the 60 pages are previews for Amazing and All-New X-men. It’s not for everyone, and even the intended audience may have some problems with this one.

This book is perfection.

It really is! Everything from the cover to the last page is great, without a misstep in site. Spencer and Lieber’s formula is no different than the one BKV and Fiona Staples use over in Saga; start off awesome, and end with a crazy, shocking (no pun intended) cliffhanger. I don’t think I’ve read a heist in comics before this insane, nor hilarious. And the intro for this issue is CRAZY tense, and kind of gross, but in a good way.  This book is a blessing, and it’s gone from great to can’t miss in the span of 5 issues. This book is up there with Hawkeye and Daredevil in terms of quality, something I know I’ve said a number of times before, and will continue to say until sales and morale improves. I mean c’mon it’s like Forever Evil, only no I suppose not come to think of it, and actually good!

Review: Thor the Dark World and Thor: God of Thunder volume 1

Thor-The-Dark-World-Wide-ImageTHIS WEEK IN CONFESSIONS: I’m not exactly the biggest Thor fan out there. Might as well get that out of the way early. It’s been established a number of times that I’m a Clint Barton guy, so I wasn’t exactly super hyped going into Thor the Dark World this past weekend, aside from the fact that we were promise TWO whole post credit scenes. I enjoyed the first Thor movie well enough ( which had a Hawkeye cameo!), but I’ve been riding that Captain America The Winter Soldier hype-train since that trailer dropped a few weeks back.

That TL:DR review of Thor: 2 is that it’s fun and a nice step up from the original movie. All the pesky origin stuff is done with, so we get a lot more Thor being Thor and hitting stuff with Mew-Mew this time around,  all while Loki gets that Tumblr crowd money filling seats for repeated viewings. And most of this movie take place in Asgard/the non-Earth realms so there’s a very cool Star Wars/Lord of the Rings vibe to the whole thing that comes across as a giant love letter to Jack Kirby. All of the key players deliver, as Hemsworth’s more mature Thor is easier to root for, Kat Dennings remains a blessing and Tom Hiddleston is still perfect as the trickster god. This movie isn’t exactly the deepest thing playing in theaters, but it doesn’t pretend to be. Marvel has a winning formal for these movies, and The Dark World follows it to a T.

I do have 2 problems with the flick though. The first is the pacing. It starts off slow, but after the first 30 minutes, it takes off at breakneck speed and doesn’t slow down until the ending. And while could have been much worst, it could have been a tad better if certain scenes got a chance to breathe more. My other issue is Christopher Eccleston, and actor I adore from Doctor Who, isn’t utilized properly as the film’s big bad Malekith. I don’t understand why you would  cast an awesome actor like Eccleston and not take advantage of his talents, or flesh out his character more? Any schlub could have played him the version of Malekith portrayed in the film for a fraction of what Marvel paid Eccleston, who’s an ultimately forgettable villains once the credits start rolling/

Despite my issues with the film, it was a fun popcorn film overall, and the mid-credits scene was AWESOME and sets the stage for another Marvel film dropping in 2014 (2 guesses). So go check it out, it’s not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Now what if you’re fresh from the theater and want to pick up some Thor comics? “Where to start” you may ask, especially with a character as rich as Thor with great runs by a variety of talents creators like Kirby, Lee, Simonson, Fraction, Gillen, Jurgens and Romita and Copiel (also JMS). Assuming you can read, you’ve probably figured out that I’m going to suggest Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic’s Thor: God of Thunder, one of the BEST books to emerge from the plenty-strong MARVEL NOW relaunch over the last year.

You may remember me tossing some shade at these creators 2 weeks ago when I was discussing the ending of Battle of the Atom. While I still think critique was justified, Aaron and Ribic are operating on a different level here on Thor:GoT. Volume 1, The God Butcher. It is a very different monster from said event, and quite frankly, the results are much better for it. The elevator pitch for this 1st collection is simple, it’s Thor vs. a serial killer of gods. The hook is that this isn’t the first time Thor’s thrown down with this dude, and this book gets into some Doctor Who level timey-whimey stuff, only a lot more violence. A. LOT. MORE. VIOLENT.

This is the usual level of insanity for a Jason Aaron book, complete with a title that’s a KISS reference, but it’s Esad Ribic who really shines in this book. This title FEELS like a epic fantasy story, with the sort of beautiful brutality you get from Game of Thrones. You many cringe once or twice reading this book, because it does not pull back the punches when the fists and hammers are thrown, and Ribic does a fantastic job of drawing violence. The beautiful imagery is only strengthened by Aaron’s awesome heavy metal scripts, that give Esada a ton of awesome stuff to work with. With little knowledge needed to get into this run, I can’t recommend this series enough. There’s currently 2 volumes of Thor:GoT out now in hardcover, each priced at $24.99 each.

Remember last week when I was complaining about how it’s hard to critique flawless comics. Here were are again, this time with the newest issue of Saga, which I’m sure surprises no one.  Also damn, that cover is hot, despite also being sort of ridiculous if you’re at all familiar with the book’s leads.

Without diving into spoilers, in this issue Staples and BKV introduce a new character, catch us up with several other characters, answer some questions about an alien planet, and end it all with a killer cliffhanger. The later comes as no surprise, because the book ends on a cliffhanger 90% of the time, which results in me cursing 100% of the time. Other norms for this title seen in this issue include Staples’ fantastic art and colors, and BKV’s hilarious and heartful dialogue. Also vulgar at times, which we all know I’m okay with because I love Sex Criminals. Also damn, that ending, really makes one long for the next issue (less than 30 days away, ha ha crap). So yeah, Saga‘s still perfect in case you were wondering.

Speaking of incredibly difficult comics to review…..

Let me say something. If you think Overture is going to be your introduction to the Sandman universe, you’re wrong. So wrong even. This book is fan-service in a way, and if you’ve yet to read arguably one of the BEST comics series of all time, this is not for you. You will be lost, even if you wiki it like a sucker-punk.

But let’s say you’re like me and LOVED the original series. Is this book worth $5? I’ll say YES, it most certainly is, but don’t expect a game changer. This is an incredibly DENSE read, because that’s how Neil Gaiman rolls, and it’s kind of slow paced, because again, Neil Gaiman. WHICH IS FINE, BECAUSE HOLY HELL, J.H. WILLIAMS IS REALLY GOOD AT THIS ART THING EVERYONE. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book William’s drawn (yeah I dropped Batwoman 8 issues in, sorry not sorry), and his skill meets Gaiman’s wonderfully trippy script makes for an fantastical end result.

Now is this book worth buying now, or worth holding out for the eventual deluxe hardcover may be a question you have if you’re a hardcore Sandman fan. That’s entirely up to you. Chances are I’ll double dip on this, assuming it’s a good read. Again I REALLY liked issue #1, BUT your mileage may vary. And again, it’s kinda fan service-y, not in a pandering way, but more of a you need to be up on your Sandman lore to get this book way like I said earlier. And who knows,  it may end up not be completely necessary at all by this all said and done, not unlike Before Watchmen (only you know, not scummy). But it’s hard to imagine that will be the case, especially with the quality of the debut issue.

Marvel, $3.99, 30 pages

You had one job X-team. One job.

Looks like I’m repeating myself again when it comes to reviewing an X-book. Jason Aaron, as well as Brian Wood and Brian Michael Bendis for the epilogues, wrap up a fairly fun X-event. But once again, the art on this event falls apart.

I don’t mind Kris Anka, Chris Bachalo and Stuart Immonen swinging by to draw some of the epilogues, because they all are great artists who make the ending of this book look really good. But the main story by Esad Ribic, and 2 or 3 others dudes? Not so great. It’s sloppy, looks rushed, the characters are extremely off model-looking at times and you couldn’t have chosen artists whose styles clash any more it seems. It once again ruins Aaron’s solid script, which to be honest, could have toned down the snark in some parts.

But yeah, this event is kind of a mixed bag now that it’s all is said and done. Some really cool stuff happens,  including some fun fan servicey stuff for X-readers, and some new plots to work with going into the 2nd year of the Aaron/Bendis/Wood era of X-books. I just wish some of the questions raised were answered now opposed to down the line (if at all!), and that the art delivered in the last 2 chapters.

Jason Aaron/ Giuseppe Camuncoli/ Andrew Currie

Marvel, $3.99, 20 pages

Chapter 9 of the Battle of Atom crossover is such a pain to review on some level. On the script end of things, it’s a fine book, as Aaron delivers on several fronts. If I was discussing this book on the quality of it’s script alone, I’d say it was fantastic. But visually this art in this issue isn’t very good. The book credits Camuncoli as the penciller, and Currie as the finisher. What that means exactly, I don’t know, but it results in some less than great visuals when all is said and done. The art seems very rushed, which is unfortunate, because this event has been fantastic so far in that department, and it seem odd that Camuncoli, a veteran of the 2x a month shipping Spider-books, couldn’t deliver. Because man, this is an ugly book  and it rarely, if ever, matches the standard of Aaron’s script. Hopefully this is more of a mistep than an indication of what the final chapter will be like, because it would suck and blow if the final chapter of this event was as poorly drawn as this one was.

Sex Criminals #2

Matt Fraction/ Chip Zdarsky

Image, $3.50, 20 pages

When the first issue of #SEXCRIMINALS dropped, I thought it was a very good issue, but it was not at all what I expecting given the contents of the creator’s tweets. It was great, but more 16 Candles than the 40 Year Old Virgin, which I did not see coming. Issue #2 is probably the funniest and vulgar comic I’ve read in years, starting from a page to page recap on the first page to a very candid and HILARIOUS letter page, ending with a picture of Fraction getting a nipple pierce in Toronto sex club. This book is not afraid to be an adult comic, and it’s all the better for it. Fraction writes 2 very human leads with a strange and funny power and Chip Zdarsky’s visual gags are gut-busting. His day job as a Canadian magazine/newspaper (I forget) cartoonish is on full display here, and the product is better for it. This was easily the best book I read this week, and I can’t recommend Sex Criminals enough if you’re A) 17 or older B) Not easily offended C) A little bit of a pervert.

Ed Brubaker/Steve Epting

Image, $3.50, 20 pages

Before I discuss my problem with Velvet, let start by saying how GREAT this book looks. Steve Epting’s, with Elizabeth Breitweiser on colors, art is some next level stuff, as Velvet is easily one of the best looking comics in an already strong stable of artists over at Image. That being said, the Brubaker-snob in me feels this script is VERY by the books, especially after reading his other excellent creator owned series Fatale, and his modern-classic run on Captain America. While it’s an original concept, it feels a bit like an unused Black Widow script at times.  Of course your enjoyment may vary, because you may not be a Bru-snob like myself. And it’s by no means a bad comic. I’m just a little let down is all, and maybe a  little spoiled by Fatale. It’s definitely work a look if you’re a Brubaker/espionage fan though, even with a ton of great Image books already flooding the market.

Mark Waid/ Chris Samnee

Marvel, $2.99, 20 pages

Speaking of books that are hard to review, here’s Daredevil. Is Mark Waid one of the best writer still working in the industry? Yup. Is Chris Samnee somehow doing new things with his art, reaching Bruce Timm’s level of quality in some panels/pages. Hell, even the sound effects are used cleverly (not sure if that’s Samnee or VC’s Joe Carmagna) and are super fun. Again, this is brief, but that’s because this book remains flawless. Unless you hate great comics, y’all need to be reading Daredevil. I’m tired of trying to come up with new ways of trying to say how great this book is.

Kelly Sue Deconnick/ Emma Rios

Image, $3.50, 20 pages

As anyone whose read this column before can tell you, I’ve never had a problem admitting the fact that I’m a HUGE fan of Kelly Sue Deconnick’s writing. AND DAMN, KSD’s creator owned book’s debut comes out swinging, with Emma Rios’ best work to date, making this book a visual tour-de-force. A fantasy-western with a female lead, Pretty Deadly’s debut may not exactly be the most straightforward read, but it’s the one of the best look books to debut this year. Rios’ work is both dynamic and trippy, and it’s fun just to stare at her panel work and layouts in this book without reading any dialogue. Her character designs are pretty great, and it’s a shame that we don’t see our lead until the final page of this issue, because Ginny’s possibly the coolest new character of 2013 I.M.O, at least on a visual level.

KSD’s script is sharp, even if it’s a little abstract at time. Her work here is VERY different from her Captain Marvel scripts, aside from the fact that both books have some kick ass female leads. But it’s still fantastic, making Pretty Deadly a must read, especially with Jordie Bellaire’s colors completely the package, making this one of the best looking takes on the wild west in some time. In a white-male heavy industry, books like Pretty Deadly are rare , but definitely needed and welcomed. Arguably one of most important launches of the fall, and it delivers. Buy on sight, assuming it’s still in stock.

I have read some comics, and one of them is called “Sex Criminals”!

It was a GREAT week for comics that I buy, and I am excited to tell you all about them FPNYC Faithful. Let me do so right now!

sex-criminalsIn terms of new releases for 2013, Sex Criminals (Images Comics $3.50) is definitely one of the books I was most hyped for. Oh wow, Chris is excited about a Matt Fraction book, I am surprised, said no one. All joking aside, I was sold on this title after I got a chance to read a few pages at Heroescon this year, and the final product definitely met, and exceeded, my expectations. It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten to enjoy a creator owned book by Fraction, and Sex Criminals shows of a side of the writer’s talents only hinted at in Hawkeye. It’s funny, with a hint of tragedy, and if you’re not following Fraction on Twitter, some of the adult content shown off in the book will suprise you. And speaking of Twitter, Chip Zdarsky‘s art is as good as his tweets are hilarious. His style is very unique, and he does some really impressive work with layouts, panels designs, and comedic delivery. And being a comedy book only makes it stand out on the shelves even more. I can’t recall reading a book this funny in awhile, outside of Superior Foes of Spider-Man, and it looks fantastic, thanks in-part to some wonderful coloring.  Sex Criminals is definitely something different and something adult, but worth it if you’re not afraid to try something not involving spandex, and are a fan of  Judd Apatow style comedies.

saga14-cover-71322Once again another issue of Saga (Image Comics $2.99) hits the stands, and once again, I’m blown away. I’ve praised the book plenty time in the past, but there’s a 4 panel sequence towards the end of the book that’s so beautiful it’s hurts. Everything about this book is perfect, from the dialogue, the emotional timing, to the art. It’s a really difficult book to review when everything is done so right. With only 14 issue under their belts, Staples and BKV have introduced a fairly large cast, a very diverse one at that, and their designs and actions just show how powerful their creators imaginations is. Image has been THE publisher for the last 18 months or so, and books like Saga are the reason why.

Avengers_Assemble_Vol_2_19If you remember last week (which you should, otherwise you may have some problems), I was not kind to the latest issue of Captain Marvel. This week, Avengers Assemble #1 (Marvel, $3.99) drops by the same writers, and it’s a much needed improvement. Kelly Sue Deconnick and Jen Van Meter use Infinity to delve into Spider-Woman psyche, and showing off a side of Black Widow we usually don’t see. It’s a fun read, and Barry Kitson delivers the type of visuals you’d expect from the veteran artists. Unfortunately, the art suffers from being inked by no less than 4 inkers, and it doesn’t stay as consistent as it does when Chris Bachalo does it. It’s still a good issue, and well wroth your time. And Avengers Assemble is only going to get bet, as November see Warren Ellis jump on board to lend a hand with the scripts.

Wolverine_and_the_X-Men_Vol_1_36Pretty cover is pretty, and super misleading. Don’t expect a mutant throw-down in Wolverine and the X-men 36 (Marvel, $3.99). What you should expect is one hell of a plot twist, and a great story told by Jason Aaron and Giuseppe Camuncoli. If you haven’t jumped on board with Battle for the Atom yet, there’s very little this issue will offer you, but if you’re like me, you will scream at several points in this book. It’s great, simple as that. we’re about halfway through Battle of the Atom and this event is delivering, not unlike Schism from a few years back. With any luck, this will continue into October, and we’ll have an X-event for the ages.

Yet again, comics I have bought

Happy belated 4th of July FPNYC  Faithful, it is disgusting outside, let’s blow up the sun.

Saying I’m a mark for Matt Fraction stuff is like saying that…that’s it’s too hot outside to make comparisons. Any-who, Satellite Sam from Image Comics dropped this past week. Fraction is on word duty obviously, and the art-stuff is provided by legendary creator Howard Chaykin. Chaykin OWNS this book, doing some really impressive panel work and layouts. The fact that it’s black and white also helps the book maintain it’s 1950s vibe, and credit goes to Fraction for dialogue that fits as well. It’s a surprisingly dense read as well, with the debut issue clocking in at 40 pages. For all of you not in the know, “Sam” is a fictional murder-mystery case not unlike the George Reeves story, but with much darker and erotic overtones. Anyone familiar with Chaykin’s past works should not be surprised by this, but if you only know Fraction from his Marvel work, prepare to see a different side of the creator. A overall solid issue, the only down side to it is that it tends to drag in some areas, especially when you compare it to last week’s excellent and shorter issue of Hawkeye. Still for $3.50, it’s hard to dislike this book.

Switching gears, let’s take a look at the other single issue I bought this week. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake‘s final issue has shipped, and both the wife and I are going to miss this mini-series. Natasha Allegri, the creator of the gender (and species!) swapped Fionna and Cake has created arguably my favorite mini-series of the year, let alone one of the best looking comics to come out in 2013. Allegri’s storyboard background  is evident in this book, which comes across more as a children’s storybook at time more-so than a comic book in terms of layout, and I mean that in a positive way. And props to guest artist Betty Liang for some amazing art in the early pages in the book. Script wise, this book is flawless, characters sound like their animated counterparts, and the story has a lot of depth and warmth to it as well. Fionna and Cake definitely give Carol Danvers a run for her money as the best female leads in a comic as of late, and I’m sure this will not be the last time we’ll see this 2 in the pages of a kaBOOM book. I imagine this thing will look amazing when collected, but this charming mini series deserves to be read immediately, especially if there any young fans of the show in your house. GET ON IT.

The final book I’ll be looking at is the 5th volume of Wolverine and the X-men. Fellow OCD  collectors, as of the 5th trade, the book is now published as a trade paper back, not as a hardcover, which means the prices drops a few bucks and the page count grows. I am okay with this.

After 2 volumes of AvX tie-ins. WaTXM volume 5 is the first collection in the Marvel NOW era…which ultimately means nothing come to think of it. Oh sure there’s a few new mutants and a new instructor, but plot wise it feels more like a 2nd season than a do over, thanks to creators Jason Aaron and Nick Bradshaw sticking around. Bradshaw gets some assist on the art department by Steve Sanders and David Lopez, two great artist themselves. The 6 issues collected deal with the school expanding, new mutants emerging, FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER’S MURDER CIRCUS, and DATE NIGHT! This book is super fun, and it’s great to get back to the original premise now that the AvX business is dealt with. This book read and looks great collected in trade, and considering you’re saving $6 by buying it in trade, it’s well worth the money if you like X-books that are fun and in the same vein of the early Claremont/Morrison stuff.

TRY SOMETHING NEW Chapter 17: That Can Save Her People…

Funny story. My column ran long last week and Unkie Dev’s space got cut. Since then I have been wracked with guilt and completely unable to function in my daily life. I am overwrought with worry thinking about all you Unkie Dev Dev-iants who missed his thoughtful words and gentle demeanor. I have completely rethunked my whole column to try and make amends. Also the numerous death threats helped me see the issue more clearly. For this week I am doing a very special, micro-machines man-esque, super speed version of TRY SOMETHING NEW. Without further ado…

THE MASSIVE #1 is being rereleased for $1. Frontrunner for book of the year, Brian Wood does realistic global disaster from the POV of a radical environmental group hunting for a missing boat. There’s nothing like it on shelves and if you like the $1 issue you can buy the whole trade for just a bunch of dollars more. I know nobody wants to hear that this book has some light environmentalism themes so I won’t mention that. People shoot at each other though, you all like that. Read also: DMZ.

SUPERMAN: SECRET IDENTITY. A friend of mine who works at Marvel lent me this and said it was the best Superman book of all time. That’s how good it is. It almost brokered the Marvel/DC peace accords. He was wrong though. ALL-STAR SUPERMAN is the best, but this is up there. A surreal tale of a young Clark Kent that will keep you guessing. Kurt Busiek can find the humanity in superheroes better than almost anyone, and Stuart Immonen can draw that just as well. Read also: ASTRO CITY

PUNK ROCK JESUS. Sean Murphy steps out of his own artistic shadow to become a powerhouse writer. The story of a clone of Jesus who quits his reality TV show and fronts a punk band may make you cringe, but Murphy handles it with aplomb. His art, as always, is brilliant. This one may not be for everyone but if it seems interesting to you now you will probably dig it. I think the ratio of people with mohawks in comics to people with mohawks in real life is crazy. This book doesn’t help that. Read also: AMERICAN JESUS vol. 1

MISS FURY #1. It seems like something changed over at Dynamite and their relaunched character books have either been getting much better or people are finally caring about them. Now they launch Miss Fury, a hero who ends up moving through alternate timelines after WWII. She may be lost, she may be crazy, she is definitely angry (Dynamite, call me. I can make this $#!% up all day: 212.473-1576). This book is good too because if you squint you can pretend you are reading Catwoman. Read also: CATWOMAN

MICE TEMPLAR vol. 4 #1. How &*(%!#@ weird is it that there is more than one book about mice with swords? I think it’s absolutely insane. It makes me feel like I am losing my mind. It’s hard to find comics with black characters in them and there are two books with sword wielding mice?!?! Both sword/mice books are good. This one has some great Michael Avon Oeming art. Read also: MOUSE GUARD (obviously…)

THANOS RISING #1. I once went on a long and moderately well received rant about how I think in some ways comic writers are too sheltered. Many just lack crazy life experiences and it shows in their writing. I said something about how I don’t want to read comics from anyone who has never been in handcuffs, or slept with a stranger, or been knocked unconscious, or had a gun pointed at them, or woken up on a strange floor, or seen a dead body, or crashed a car, etc… Rantings of an idiot, but my point remains. I don’t know if Jason Aaron has done any of those things but he sure writes like has. Now he is writing a Thanos origin story. I don’t know who thought a Thanos origin story was necessary but here it is. Read it and everything else Jason Aaron writes. Read also: SCALPED

UBER #0. There’s a lot of Nazi stuff in comics. Nazis are like mice with swords, they’re everywhere. Except in MAUS where the mice aren’t Nazis at all and there are no swords. Confusing. Most of the Nazi stuff I find to be boring and cliché. Heck, this is my second Nazi stuff book of this column, and this column only has stuff I like in it. But Kieron Gillen is a good writer and can take a tired cliché and shake it up enough to make it feel fresh and exciting. His new series finds Nazi superheroes entering the last days of WWII to CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY! Whoa. If that doesn’t excite you you should probably stick to books with mice and swords. HARBINGER WARS #1 is a crossover between Harbinger and Bloodshot. Both of those books are among the better offerings in superheroics right now. This, the first crossover of the Valiant Comics relaunch, is all set to be epic and hopefully gamechanging. If you have been reading both main books then this event is a no-brainer. If you haven’t then I don’t know why you would start here. The trades of both individual series are only $10 each. Start there. Read also: HARBINGER, BLOODSHOT.

50 GIRLS 50. Fantagraphics has been re-releasing old EC stuff in these really nice hardcovers. Now they are taking a shot at Al Williamson’s work. Ranging from sci-fi & fantasy, to horror and crime, this stuff is almost infinitely fun and readable. There are some Ray Bradbury stories in here, as well as some stuff that Frank Frazetta drew. All with great notes on EC and Williamson. This book is equal parts truly classic comics and amazing history lesson. Come for the arts, stay for the smarts. ‘TAIN’T THE MEAT…IT’S THE HUMANITY. I could write about how this is Fantagraphics collection of all of Jack Davis’ Tales From The Crypt stuff but instead I will just direct you to the title. Now I offer the theory that anyone who does not own a book called “’Tain’t The Meat… It’s The Humanity” deserves nothing of value in their lives. This stuff is funny, gross, creepy, and like nothing that has come since, but mostly it just has the single greatest title of all time. Ever. Including the future. Read also: CAME THE DAWN

Well that’s all for me now. I just got a tip from a friendly lady cop I used to run with that a guy matching the description of tech wizard/crazed mole person, Tyler, has been spotted in the abandoned Fulton Fish Market building. I just hope I can get to him before they do. Pray for us.
