Free Comic Book Day is an annual event that now takes place on the first Saturday of May each year wherein participating comic shops all over the world give away comic books for FREE. Forbidden Planet has participated in FCBD since its inception and has given away hundreds of thousands of comics on this special day.

Each year publishers produce comic books intended to be given away that day- often samplers of what they normally publish, or reprints/previews of first issues and jump-on points of established series. Here is a list of what’s being given out Saturday (Click on the thumbnails for full pics):

Archie’s Summer Splash #1 FCBD 2010 Edition- “Whose BEACH is it Anyway?”: Sun, sand, swimsuits and cool rockin’ tunes — no, it’s not a cinematic “beach party” blast from the past, but a whole new summer splash from Archie and his friends! In this fun-filled free issue, Cheryl and her snooty friends from Pembrooke form an all-girl group to compete head on with the Archies at a summer beach music festival. Will Cheryl’s group be a tuneful treat, or mistaken for bellowing whales?

Recently there has been a whole slew of photographs from the set of Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet film, and I have to say they look great.

Before Seth Rogen, and even before Bruce Lee, the Green Hornet was a long running radio serial. Starting out as a cousin to the Lone Ranger, the character was created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker in the 1930s.

I was originally introduced to the character during an episode of Adam West’s Batman when I was a kid. Van Williams and Bruce Lee’s version of the character was on the show and I don’t really remember what ended up happening but Batman and Robin did fight Bruce Lee and Van Williams, and I think its pretty clear that Bruce Lee kicked Burt Ward’s ass. I don’t really remember, but yeah.

YouTube has it:

Regardless, the Flickcast has more photos from the set. Featuring Rogen and Jay Chou as his sidekick Kato, and directed by visionary director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

In this week’s edition of the Hollywood Lot tour we have a replacement for Nicolas Cage in The Green Hornet, news on a possible Lobo star, Mark Millar, the awesome Bruce Campbell, and Julian Sands has been cast on Smallville.

The brilliant Nazi traitor from Inglourious Basterds Christoph Waltz has replaced Nicolas Cage to play Seth Rogen’s nemesis Chudnofsky in the Green Hornet. Well, that’s a step up certainly. Previously, Rogen said that the character was meant to be scary, but “not over the top”. Sounds like Waltz is perfect for that angle.

The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) aka as Katherine Heigl’s dead boyfriend from Grey’s Anatomy wants to play Lobo, according to MTV’s Splash Page. I think that’s possible, he seems like a guy who could do that. Sure.

Lobo creator Keith Giffen couldn’t be more thrilled with Guy Richie directing the Lobo movie. Shockingly, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything Giffen has been ecstatic over. But that’s cool that he digs this idea. Giffen said Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was one of his favorite movies in ages.

Sam Raimi cameo artist Bruce Campbell will have a “major” part in Spider-Man 4, reports Access Hollywood. From the report it sounds like the Burn Notice star will play a key role in the film. Access went off about him playing Myserio but I laughed loudly and shockingly at this statement to the point that the next door neighbor knocked to make sure I was okay. Anyway, I love Campbell’s cameos, and more of him in the Spider-Man franchise the better.

Michael Ausiello sleuths that Julian Sands will play Jor-El on Smallville. The Warlock star (wow, way to bust that one out) will make his first appearance as Clark Kent’s biological father in an episode titled “Kandor” and will establish his connection to General Zod (played by Callum Blue). I’m pumped for this season which premieres next Friday, Sept. 25, at 8pm.

Mark Millar opened his mouth again about his epic Superman movie trilogy. He says he thinks he’s too expensive for DC/Warners now with his success in regards to Wanted and Kick-Ass. That’s fine, Mark, they weren’t interested anyway, you just sound really bitter. Regardless, they have no plans for Superman, says newly minted DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson.

Chris Evans is likely to not be in the Fantastic Four reboot which is a shame because he was the best part of that series.

Finally, the movie adaptation of Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber’s Eisner award winning Whiteout was a flop this weekend. The Kate Beckinsale staring film only raked in $5.1 million this weekend. Haven’t seen it yet, but considering my love for all things Rucka related, I’ll endeavor to make it.

Principal photography began last week on Seth Rogen’s remake of the pulp hero, The Green Hornet and already set pics have started to leak out. Featuring Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou and visionary director Michel Gondry.

Superherohype has the photos, which show Diaz and Rogen hosting a press conference where Rogen’s character, Britt Reid, is seemingly shot, but that’s not the best part: there is a great picture of Kato. We think its the stunt double. Regardless, it looks GREAT.

In other Green Hornet news, the release on Dec. 17, 2010 is going to have some company: Tron Legacy, according to Variety. Expect some box office fireworks.

Casting problems continue for the movie, with Nicolas Cage departing the movie after contract negotiations didn’t get up to his price tag. Comic Book Resources reports that none of the shooting features the character Cage was slated to play, but Columbia is apparently actively searching for a replacement, but no word yet on whether they are looking to replace Cage with another A-list actor. The production already stars the aforementioned Diaz, Rogen, Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou, but also Tom Wilkinson and Edward James Olmos.

Usually casting problems, and this movie has been rife with them, is a sign of poor product but I simply don’t see how that can be. Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg are, in my opinion, stellar writers having contributed to “Freaks and Geeks” when they were 16, and written episodes of “Da Ali G Show”. Even though Judd Apatow gets a lot of credit for shepherding in their writing careers, “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express” are far more entertaining than anything that Apatow has written/directed. Add visionary director Michel Gondry to this mix and I genuinely think this movie is going to be something else. What that “else” is? Well, we’ll see.

This weekend was Chicago Comic Con, and even though all of the major publishers declined to participate. Wizard Talking Head Gareb Shamus still expected record attendance and said they were committed to the location and “As far as I’m concerned, we’ll be there forever.”

Even though no one had a presence on the Con floor, there certainly wasn’t a lack of news.

Another Buffy alum and comic book writer Emma Caulfield is premiering a webcomic called “Contropussy”. Hahaha, yes. I couldn’t tell you what the hell this is about but the name alone suggests something fun and different. And I’m all for fun and different.

Marvel announced that Kieron Gillen and Steven Sanders will produce “S.W.O.R.D.” Intergalactic adventures with Beast, Agent Brand and Lockheed. If the “Phonogram” writer and “Five Fists of Science” artist is going on intergalactic adventures, I want to go as well.

MTV Splash Page reports that Green Hornet’s Kato has been found. His name is Jay Chou, and has no desire to display an homage to the character Bruce Lee made famous. Another rumor has circulated that Edward James Olmos has joined the “Green Hornet” cast lead by Seth Rogen. This movie gets weirder by the second. I’ll say though with Chou as Kato now, I’m disappointed because, well, Stephen Chow would have been awesome.

The DC Nation panel had Francis Manapul, Brian Azzarello, Freddie Williams, J.G. Jones, and others on it. The highlight for me though is that Azzarello and his “100 Bullets” collaborator Eduardo Risso will produce a new “The Shadow” book.

Good news! The Captain Britain team is getting back together for “Dark X-Men”.

Fred Van Lente, and Greg Pak reunite for the book called “Assault on New Olympus.“ Which involves the Greek Gods and their place on Earth, on Wall Street. Seems pretty interesting.

Shaun Manning has a great story of the charity event for John Ostrander at Chicago Comic Con. I’m glad things turned out well, and I hope everything is being done for Mr. Ostrander.

Yet another graphic novel tie-in to a movie with an all star cast of artists attached. I swear, this is too good to be true.

Heidi over at the Beat says, Cameron Stewart (“Seaguy”), Tommy Lee Edwards (“Marvel 1985″), Nico Henrichon (“Pride of Baghdad”) will collaborate with writer Jordan Mechner to bring the Jake Gyllenhaal film to four-color pages. Mechner wrote the video game to which the film is based upon. And that’s right, you guessed it, there will be a panel discussing the book at SDCC, at 11:30 on Friday at the Disney Press panel.

The Flickcast reports that workaholic Christos Gage is adapting Dante’s epic poem, The Divine Comedy for DC Comics. They also feature some great screengrabs from the video game due in 2010. Looks epic.

“Oh no, not THE HORNETS!” Nicolas Cage joins “The Green Hornet”. I’m sorry, I just couldn’t help myself. This movie is like rubber necking a car accident on the 59th Street bridge. Something bad happens seemingly every month. Stephen Chow is out as Kato, but they add Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz. I don’t know, with the amounts of weird choices in this movie from director Michel Gondry to these two, this is going to be one very intriguing movie. Or a car wreck.

This is for my girlfriend: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a writer! His name is John Frusca and he wrote Young Guns! Woah. Cowabunga, dude.
