Graphic Spotlight – Moonshine Vol. 1

The team that brought you 100 Bullets is back with southern roots!

I’m a crime guy. There are certain contemporary writers that when their name is on a new crime book, I’m on the hook. Brian Azzarello is one of them. If you haven’t read 100 Bullets, what’s the matter with you? He and Eduardo Risso created a masterpiece for every fan of the genre to enjoy forever. Now, they’re back with a new story and under a new publishing banner.

Moonshine Vol. 1 is a collection of what we hope is merely the beginning of this epic prohibition era southern gothic noir. It’s a hardcore crime book about gangsters with a layer of horror on top. Moonshine is about Lou Pirlo, a “city-slick ‘torpedo'” that’s been sent from the Big Apple, New York City, to get a deal done with the best moonshiner in West Virginia. That moonshiner’s name is Hiram Holt and in this era where liquor could get you sent to prison, Hiram Holt is a king over a kingdom of his own making. Lou thinks he’ll take this country bumpkin for everything he has but Lou’s going to learn, in a real painful way, that Hiram Holt will do whatever it takes to protect his boozy operation and a bloody Holt family secret.

Do you like 100 Bullets? Do you like Southern Bastards? Do you like creators like Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, or David Lapham? Then you have zero excuses, especially at the reasonable price of $9.99 not to pick up this exciting new story from one of the most iconic comic book teams of the modern age.

Graphic Spotlight – Savage

The most dangerous game involves dinosaurs and soccer stars in this new epic adventure!

Valiant has been on a hot streak lately with new adventures for established characters in titles like X-O Manowar #1 and with new faces in recent collections like Divinity, Britannia, and with this week’s new release, Savage. In a day and age where there’re so many titles fighting for your hard-earned dollars, quality is king. Fortunately, Valiant looks to be making another strong case with this mini-series at a $9.99 price tag.

The story’s a fun premise to begin. A famous soccer star and his wife who used be a supermodel (I’m sure in no way related to Victoria and David Beckham), disappeared nearly fifteen years ago. There’s been no sighting of them since. To the world they were fish food after taking off on a final flight on their private jet. The world doesn’t know the true story but now you will discover their fate and the fate of the child she was carrying.

On an uncharted island filled with dangers unbeknownst by modern man, they will struggle to hang on to their humanity in the face of prehistoric threats. Yeah that’s right, freakin’ dinosaurs! Of course, dinosaurs won’t be the only challenges they encounter. Their journey from stars to savages is charted in this pulse pounding chronicle.

From the scripts of B. Clay Moore (Aloha, Hawaiian Dick) and then mastery of Clayton Henry (Archer & Armstrong) and Lewis LaRosa (Bloodshot Reborn), whose goal in life is to live in Jurassic Park, you’re getting incredible depictions of dinosaur hunting, drug running, plane crashes, and survival on instinct alone. Did you want “Jurassic Park” meets “Lost” with a splash of “Castaway”? Because if you didn’t know you should have wanted that, now you do.

Collecting SAVAGE #1-4.

Graphic Spotlight: Animosity Vol. 1 – The Wake

A fun new take on the end of the world. Pets welcome!

Marguerite Bennett is stacking up quite the bibliography and buzz. With all the hubbub around her new Batwoman solo series, it’d be easy but unforgivable to forget the first collection of her series at Aftershock Comics: Animosity.

Bennett and artist Rafael de Latorre (Superzero) craft a really fun apocalyptic concept. We human beings should all be terrified if the animals of the world we’ve constructed gain the capacity to reason and communicate as we do. We cage them. We domesticate them. We experiment on them. What happens when the rats decide to break down the walls? What are consequences when your pet iguana can tell you what he really thinks of the things you do behind closed doors? How will you get to work if the birds decide to start making kamikaze dives through your car windshields? Get ready to find out!

The animals can talk, think, and they’ve decided to begin taking their revenge. How? That’s an answer you’ll have to search for in the book. One thing’s certain, they’re bringing chaos and the creators are self-aware of the possibilities of this concept. There’s definitely some fun to be found with the newfound form of consciousness and reasoning that the animals gain. And then the story finds its focus on Jesse, an eleven year-old girl, and her dog, Sandor, who proves that dogs may be mankind’s best friend. Sandor is devoted to Jesse and swears to protect her even as many of his species are drooling at the prospect of bloodying their jowls with their owners. One year after this awakening, Jesse and Sandor begin one of the craziest road trips since Preacher and Y: The Last Man to find Jesse’s half-brother, Adam, who is living in San Francisco and who could be the last bastion of safety for the duo.

Collecting the first four issues of the best-selling series, plus the special one-shot issue Animosity: The Rise. Read the book that, as the solicits from the publisher say, “EVERYONE is talking about.”

Graphic Spotlight – SNOTGIRL VOL. 1: GREEN HAIR DON’T CARE

Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s new series is #BuyMeNow

It’s finally here! Let’s face it, we’ve all kind of been spoiled with Bryan Lee O’Malley’s previous cult hits that include the never duplicated Scott Pilgrim series and his masterful OGN Seconds. Here’s a creator where we’re used to getting a big chunk of awesomeness at once but this time, O’Malley opted to do his first monthly series. At long last, the first volume if this #addictedtofabulous tale of Lottie Person is available in trade paperback form.

For those of you living in a superhero bubble, you’re probably wondering, “Who is Lottie Person?” That’s a rather complicated and, thus far, very fun question to answer. Lottie Person is an influential fashion blogger. She has a “[redacted] number of followers and is always on forefront of what’s hot and what’s not. As far as the digital world’s concerned, she’s the epitome of a fun-loving celebrity social media star. Every pic of her is fierce and fabulous. All of her [redacted] followers hang on her every post. Except the reality might be a little less glam-tastic. What the world doesn’t see is that Lottie suffers from ridiculously severe allergies. Which is what makes her the eponymous #Snotgirl. It’s a world of snot, blood, tears, and where nothing is exactly as it appears.

Mr. O’Malley’s brought on a newcomer for art duties in Leslie Hung. While some were at first a little disappointed that he wouldn’t be the one behind the pencils and inks, there’s no denying he’s picked a perfect collaborator to capture the complex and duplicitous world of Lottie Person.

Graphic Spotlight – WEIRD DETECTIVE: THE STARS ARE WRONG

Cthulu crime stalks the streets of New York in this cosmic horror mini-series!

There’s been a pattern, some might classify it as a plague, of crimes committed in the Big Apple that defy logic. They’re too weird and bizarre for the average detective to unravel without having to believe in the extraordinary. Fortunately, Detective Sebastian Greene isn’t your average detective. He’s fighting against these unspeakable terrors that lurk in the shadows from beyond space and time. The reason he can take on these beings who want to usher in the unimaginable evil, the Old Ones, is because he’s one of them. After all, who better to catch a monster than one of their own?

New York Time’s best-selling author, Fred Van Lente (Generation Zero, Conan the Avenger, Marvel Zombies), and artist Guiu Vilanova (Conan the Avenger) are on the case for Weird Detective, a Lovecraftian mystery tale!

It’s part cop procedural, part H.P. Lovecraft terror, and completely compelling. If you love mystery, sci-fi, horror, and classic pulp, then this weird tale is just what the coroner ordered. This collection has every issue of the mini-series that brings Fred Van Lente’s penchant for air-tight plots filled with unexpected turns back to darken your book shelves. Just remember this one thing: Buyer beware…

Graphic Spotlight: THE SHERIFF OF BABYLON VOL. 2: POW. POW. POW.

sob2

Deals with the devil rarely go right. See how the web of terror and intrigue ends in one of 2016’s best received series.

Chris came to Iraq after the 2003 American invasion to recruit and train a new generation of post-Saddam police. The murder of a recruit forced the Florida cop turned military consultant into an investigation that tangled the old government, new government, the jihadist network, the criminal underground, and American military machine together in a surefire suicide mission. Fortunately, Chris wasn’t alone chasing down the killer amidst the layers of lies and hidden agendas.

Aided by a Baghdad cop, Nassir, and the politically savvy Sofia, Chris thought he’d found the people responsible for the crime. Now, with Nassir captured, the stakes are ramping up as one man’s murder has dug Chris and everyone around him into a much deeper hole. In the violence’s aftermath, everybody’s lost something and now a debt must be paid even if it’s in blood. They say never trust a deal with the devil. In Baghdad, those kinds of deals can be explosive.

Written by one of 2016’s breakout comics writers and CIA veteran Tom King (Batman, The Vision, Omega Men) and gorgeously illustrated by Mitch Gerads (Batman, The Punisher) THE SHERIFF OF BABYLON VOL. 2: POW. POW. POW. brings one of the decade’s most critically acclaimed series to its stunning conclusion. Collects issues #7-12.

Our 200 Best-Selling Graphic Novels of 2013

Even though it’s damn near the middle of February I thought the following list of Forbidden Planet NYC’s most popular, best-selling graphic novels of 2013 would be of some interest.

Perhaps you’re looking for a new read, and are curious as to what the cool kids in the heppest city in the solar system are picking up (even if some of these books have been perennial faves for years and years).  Perhaps you’ll be looking at this list for some other reason (stalkers). Either way, thanks to all our customers who made 2013, and every year, such a great time to be in the business of slinging quality books!

It’s a rather lengthy post so it continues after the jump…

Forbidden Planet NYC on Flavorwire’s List of America’s Top Ten Comic and Graphic Novel Stores

Natch.

Recently, we’ve been surveying readers and staff, and cluing you in to some of our favorite indie shops around the country. First we did bookstores, then we moved on to record stores. Both lists generated healthy debates, and lots of suggested additions. Now, we’ve asked our Facebook followers (along with some expert friends) to tell us about their favorite comic shops. The top 10 we’ve come up with is certainly skewed by our own prejudice for stylish, wide-ranging stores that also stock indie comics and graphic novels, rather than old-fashioned places that only cater to superhero devotees. And we’d much rather see a small, well-curated store than a big one that stocks the same stuff as every other big one.

forbidden_planet_nyc

Before you enter Forbidden Planet for the first time, take a deep breath… you’re going to want to buy everything.

While I don’t agree with one of the the article’s comments regarding the staff, and the picture of the shop they chose to use was taken ca. 1998, we’re quite honored.

How To Join COBRA

By Devin T. Quin

One of the secrets of success in life is connections, knowing the right people and mixing in the correct social circles to ensure a prosperous future. The hardest part about making these crucial connections, however, is stopping yourself from punching every single human being you meet in their pathetic, mewling faces for not letting YOU rule them all like the simpering cattle they are! Bwa-HA-Ha!

Prepare to hear the good news, brother (or sister): There is an organization dedicated to the same principles you hold dear, the high rewards and low accountability of being an elitist, evil global dominator! You may have heard of this incredible body of like-minded individuals: they call themselves COBRA! Continue reading
