Godzilla vs Caligula

What a week for insanely violent comic madness.  It’s as if Satan himself came up from hell and packed our shelves with his favorite stuff.

Avatar publishing has been at the top of their gruesome game with releases like Crossed, Garth Ennis’ take on the zombie genre, and Alan Moore’s Cthulhu-rape masterpiece, Neonomicon.  If that’s not enough to get your blood pumping, this weeks’ Caligula #1 by little Davey Lapham will surely do it.  It’s all the messed up good fun expected from the man who brought you my favorite comic of all time, Stray Bullets.

Also, the highly anticipated return of Godzilla to our beloved comic shelves has been realized this week by our good friends, IDW publishing.  With Eric Powell’s name attached to this book we just know its gonna be good. Just look at that beautiful gatefold cover he did for the first issue.  Grab a copy of  Godzilla #1 while you still can, I know this baby is gonna go fast.

Those two hot numbers, a new issue of Walking Dead and Kick-Ass 2 #2— what more could a Matt D ask for?

Hyped for next Wednesday

Looks like I’ll be searching through the couch cushions for change again next week.  Here’s my projected pull list, I say projected cause I always end up buying more than I plan.

7 Billion Needles Vol 3 – Manga! Yeah I read that stuff too.  This one reminds me a lot of Parasyte but with a female lead.

Avengers #10 – The Hood, The Illuminati, and The Infinity Gems… Oh my!

Crossed Psychopath #1 – My favorite comic book creator David Lapham back with a new Crossed series.  I just finished the last Crossed run Family Values (also by Lapham) and let me tell you, its just as sick, if not sicker than Garth Ennis’ original run.

Bullseye Costume T-Shirt

Deadpool #33 – Deadpool in space.

Deadpool Team-Up #884 – Deadpool and The Watcher, best team-up yet.

Detective Comics #874 -More Scott Snyder, Batfans approved!

Gotham City Sirens #20 -Harley out for Joker blood.

Metalocalypse Dethklok #3 -Ca ca ca comic books.

Punisher In Blood #4 – Jigsaw is back and boy is he pissed, and so is Frank Castle for that matter.

Secret Avengers #10 – Watch your backs Secret Avengers its Bizarro Nick Fury and a guy who can actually kick Steve Rogers ass.

Vampire Tales Vol 2 – Finally! The 2nd digest sized collection of the Marvel Vampire Tales magazine.  I loved the first volume and was super stoked when I noticed this one is hitting shelves this week.  Even Matt D is reading vampire books on the train nowadays.

See you next Wednesday…

How to Create Cool Comic Book Characters

Comic books are all the rage, and tomorrow’s star of the printed page will be the next big thing on the silver screen! Yep, Hollywood money is whipping up every able-bodied creator into a creative tizzy. WHO will create the next Iron Man, Batman and Jonah Hex so that they can be watered down into unrecognizable action figure grade silhouettes of themselves for a feckless public to mass consume?

Maybe YOU!

But classic comic book characters like Constantine, The Mystery Men and Tank Girl don’t just bubble up out of the ground like some sort of addictive, mind controlling white food substitute, they (unfortunately) have to be thought up in the minds of human beings, those rotten jerks.

“Ah dangit!” you weakly bleat. “I’m barely a human being as it is. How the heck am I supposed to come up with a new comic book character with warmth, foibles and features…especially when I only want to do so to enjoy the contemporary financial windfall that comic books are (supposedly) enjoying?”

Well, the real question, sir or madam is “Do you want a little cheese to go with that whine?”

Never fear, peasants. Unkiedev is here to tell you what to think. Follow these simple steps and you too can create legendary comic book characters! Continue reading
