A Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy

There’s a week to go before Free Comic Book Day…a full week of dreaming, scheming, screaming and camping out at the Forbidden Planet in order to get the finest free comics this side of Andromeda. Luckily for all of us, Forbidden Planet has TONS (literally) of amazing products to entertain while you wait, only this stuff is for pay.

Buying things helps you appreciate the free things better.

FORBIDDEN TOPICS

Did you ever wonder what makes the Planet so Forbidden? Why, it’s staffed entirely by galactic refugees who have escaped from the toughest alien jails in the Milky Way, naturally. Did you ever see “The Chronicles of Riddick?” It’s a lot like that, only in a comic book shop, and also we don’t generally drain the blood from slaves to view the future…only on special occasions.

Take Morgan Pielli, my editor here at the Weekly Planet. Morgan is a prolific  cartoonist (Indestructible Universe Quarterly) and mini-book reviewer with more talent in his little pinkie than someone less talented. He is also a wanted intergalactic felon known as “The Grinzzskt,” which is a kind of teleporting, flesh-eating ostrich found in the Cyper Belt. His crimes are numerous, but include space larceny, space loitering, space littering and a litany of other “L” related space maladies one can list.

If you wanted to buy amazing mini-comics to tide you over till Free Comic Book Day (May 5th!) then Morgan can point you in the right direction. If you want an illegal forged space license as well, he’s also your man.

Speaking of awesome minis:

Big Title #2, Alec Lewellyn (W/A)

Another cosmic creep, nascent ne’er-do-well and Forbidden Planet employee is none other than Jr. Manager Alec Lewellyn! Alec has a pretty dang swankaroonie self published comic on the shelf right now at the Planet by the name of “Big Title.”

What if I told you that $4 could buy you a wrestling yarn which playfully illustrates all that is best in this sport of kings while simultaneously skewers the shameful spectacle that is grown men faking at fighting? You will laugh, you will cry and you will feel emotions better left u-felt. Continue reading

Con-trived Pun for a Title

Suicide Squad #8, out NEXT week from DC, BETTER clear up these rumors I’ve been hearing about a certain demise within that team’s roster. Hopefully we’ll be seeing one of the chief stars of that title return from the tomb toot-sweet, as audiences stop paying for shows that fail to star their main attractions. I’d say Johnny Storm of the FF wins for “Quickest attention grabbing death undone to regain readers,” except this is Easter Weekend and any mention of this subject seems sacrilegious.

Speaking of dates, and I don’t mean “those-things-I-don’t-go-on-because-I’m-playing-Minecraft.”

PAX East is THIS upcoming weekend, as is Anime Con Boston, proving once again that business people have as much foresight as a flounder. Anyone want to make a lot of money this weekend in the Bay State? Just rent a party van, throw in a Magic: The Gathering table and a flatscreen that plays Full Metal Alchemist DVDs, then  charge ten bucks a ride to ferry folks between the two events. Repeat until rich enough to buy tickets to the San Diego Comic Con this year on July 12-15.

I can remember the years when the MoCCA Art Fest, unfortunately, fell on the same weekend as The Mermaid Day Parade. Luckily, MoCCA is right around the corner on Saturday and Sunday, April 28th and the 29th, while the Mermaid Parade is in June. It is poor timing that the New York Convention for Gluing Broken Tiles to Light Posts will happen during MoCCA, but I think that’s only going to throw off a handful off attendees to both. These are a highly specialized group of people, and are used to such hardships.

Free Comic Book Day will be on the first Saturday of May, as always, which this year will fall on May 5th …as sad conflict with The New York Comic Con, which will be on October 11-14.  I say it’s a conflict because some of this year’s books are looking so good, I’ll still be reading them by the time October comes around!

THIS WEEK

I kid, I kid. I can’t actually read, I just like to look at the pictures.

Adventure Time #2 will look cool intentionally, if not casually, flopping out of the back pocket of a well scruffed pair of vintage, acid washed jeans. Action Comics #8 will close out the latest weird arch on Grant Morrison’s run on the Man of Steel…and speaking of Grant:

AS MENTIONED LAST WEEK, NOW is your chance to own the spectacular Flex Mentallo Hard Cover, reprinting for the first time the original collaboration between Morrison and Quitely that’s been out of print since 1996. Get it before Charles Atlas’ lawyers realize they’re letting people have fun and DC gets sued again! Continue reading

Free Comic Book Day 2011 (is coming)!

By Unkiedev

Logic states that any article regarding Free Comic Book Day should be written in order to glorify and promote. As the day in question is the first Saturday of May, one MIGHT logically write about it NEXT week, as it’s closer to the actual date so as to inspire participation…but this fails to take into account that people might have made plans for that day.

By promoting Free Comic Book Day (May7th) two weeks ahead of time, it gives you gals and guys ample time to cancel any and all obligations that morning so that you can be here at Forbidden Planet bright and early to catch all the eponymous free comics!

Unkiedev’s Helpful Guide to Ditching Engagements on Free Comic Book Day (May 7th) WITHOUT LYING

7. Had plans for mimosa and steak brunch with pals? “Ooh, sorry guys,” you’ll say,  “a famous detective needs my help that morning solving an international mystery.”  THIS will NOT be a lie, thanks to Inspector Gadget from Viper Comics!  YES the good Inspector’s adventures are silly, wacky and bonkers. That’s what makes them fun! Continue reading

New Comics of the New Year!

By Devin T. Quin

Welcome to 2011, where a whole new calendar YEAR of fun comic book activities awaits us! We should definitely start planning out our itinerary now so that we don’t miss out on any of the disappointment, greed and debilitating poverty that is our reward for being good little comic book collecting boys and girls.

The first and most important event of the year? UNKIEDEV’S BIRTHDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd!

THAT’S RIGHT, it’s my friggin’ birthday! I accept cash, Forbidden Planet gift cards, ANYTHING by Steve Mannion and opportunities to humiliate people at the game Settlers of Catan. What would I really like for my birthday? Well….

MOCCA ART FESTIVAL : April 10th and 11th

MOCCA might be my favorite comic convention of the year. By being a highly visual exploration of comic book art it automatically includes the business of comic books into its scope in an understandable way.

Every year they have great guests who have made contributions to expanding American comic book art. The venue itself fills with new artists and enterprising comic book publishers. It’s an entire con of artists alley! Juxtaposing struggle with success shows the way it can all be done: Try to be the best artists you can and you can have a career being an artists!

Guests this year will include Art Spiegleman, Kyle Baker, Gahan Wilson, Paul Pope and Frank Miller. Yes, THE Frank Miller…a guy who should know better than to show up at MOCCA.

For my birthday you can show up at MOCCA and toss a tomato at the guy. Be sure you yell out “THAT’S for the SPIRIT,” or “Go be a homophobe in some OTHER obscure hobbie!”

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY : MAY 7th

Set your watches for the first Saturday in May when comic book retailers try to pump new blood into the vampiric corpse of comic books! Anybody who shows up on May 7th (While supplies last) will get a free comic book to hopefully spark an interest in the hobby and ensure numbers for the coming year.

If there’s a flaw (and as this at least the fifth year they’ve done this so I highly doubt it’s a money loser) it is that whatever comic book the patron receives is whatever the industry wants to spoon feed them. There won’t be happy accidents where people pick something new that catches their eye, only something corporately suggested. Imagine going to an all you can eat buffet with only Hostess brand Twinkees, Ho-Hos and Cupcakes. Continue reading

Wizkids_War_Machine_FCBDMarvel Heroclix War Machine Figure- When Iron Man needs backup, he calls upon War Machine! War Machine is slated to be a major part of the May 2010 Iron Man 2 movie, and to capitalize on this, WizKids will be modifying the popular War Machine sculpt from the Marvel HeroClix: Armor Wars series as 2010’s Free Comic Book Day figure. This exclusive figure comes with an all-new dial and character card. *Please note- This item will only be distributed upon request and while supplies last.*

Now for how May 1st will be going down at Forbidden Planet NYC.  We will be giving away bags containing every different FCBD offering we receive on a first come, first served basis.  All ages bags will also be provided as this is a family-friendly event and there’s little else we like more than comics in the hands of a new generation of readers.  Once we give out all complete bags we will then distribute any remaining FCBD comics at our discretion.  Once our supply runs out we will give out stacks of comics that we have picked from our inventory from the last few years.  As always, we may also have some unannounced stuffs to give away as well.

Also, if you didn’t read it above, Steve Mannion will be on hand signing copies of Asylum Press’ FCBD offering Fearless Dawn #1, selling artwork  and taking sketch commissions.
