Troy’s Toys : Toy Fair 2015 part 1

I did a thing on Monday! A thing being street for “Attended Toy Fair 2015 at the Javitis Center  for the very first time!” in case you’re not in the know.

Anywho, fun Toy Fair fact- you can’t see the big boys of toys ( Hasbro/Lego/Mattel) without appointments. Apparently a guest badge has less power at Toy Fair that I was lead to believe, so I missed out seeing all the cool Marvel figures I wanted to steal.

What I did see, aside from an alarmingly amount of educational toys, are some cool action figures that will be dropping over the next year. Also fun fact: everyone wants to be Funko now. Despite the fact that Funko has the license to do ANYTHING at this point, so it seems kinda redundant.

heroes-of-the-storm-series-1-nova-terra-63ef0 devil-may-cry-afa02NECA was the first booth I checked out, because they announced they’re doing figures based on Blizzard’s “Heroes of the Storm”, which is my current MOBA jam. The large prototypes on display  looked great (NOVA! <3), and I’m eager to see what the final products look like this summer. Also on display were more Simpsons Celebrity figures, Pacific Rim toys, more Aliens and Predator figures, as well as Planet of the Apes. The most surprising had to the often delayed Player’s Select Dante figure ( Devil May Cry 1 none the less), which looks to be the most accurate/best version of the character to date. NECA will also continue to do NES/Genesis era versions of their licensed characters, like Godzilla, Rambo and Predator, because they’re down with that sort of synergy. And finally, expect to see a bunch of figures based on the Playstation hit Little Big Planet, with Sackboy in his original form, plus in the form of other Playstation franchises like Uncharted and God of War.

Flash-TV-Flash-AF-65377 DC-Icons-AF-MisterMiracle-f83a0From there, I paid a visit to the Diamond Selects/DC booth. While most of the non-DC toys were already released, the DC selection was quite rad. Expect to see a ton of new figures & statues based on their non-Constantine TV shows ( Gotham, Flash and Green Arrow, plus classic stuff like Batman 66 & Batman the Animated Series)  dropping in the near future. In addition to that, there’s the DC Icon lines, which seem to be the In-house evolution of the dead Mattel DC Universe Classics line. The first couple of waves are a mix of iconic characters like Batman and Superman, with lesser know ones like Mister Miracle, Deadman, and Blue Beetle III. The $24.95 price tag seems to be justified, although I’m curious if this line will eventually replace the new 52 figures that have been coming out from the company as of late.

Pop-Doctor-Who-10th-Doctor-eb9bd Legacy-Firefly-Hoban-Washburne-5f2dfI touched upon Funko earlier, cracking wise about how they have the license for everything, but that’s not that much of an exaggeration. Aside from the usual licenses, expect the POP line to grow with figurines based on Doctor Who, Evolve, Futurama, Bravest Warriors and the Breakfast Club, amongst other. Their Legacy line of 6″ figures will add Firefly, the Rocketeer and Evolve to it’s ranks, and the Faux Classic-Kenner esque line continues to grow, with toys based on Arrow, Breaking Bad, The 5th Element and Terminator 2.

That’s all I’ll cover this time. Next up: More from DC and Funko, some McFarlane Toys plus some cool import Goodness from Bandai, Square Enix and Good Smile!

And that my friends is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. I could go on and on with Doctor Who gift ideas, in fact I might just do another DW gift idea list before the X marks the Mas. But before I do this topic again I hope to get a few more lists up specific to other factions of fandom. With a little bit of help by the end of this gift giving season everyone will be begging to be on your x-mas shopping list!

wEBFifth-Beatle-SigningWriter/producer Vivek Tiwary will be signing copies of his new graphic novel- The Fifth Beatle – at Forbidden Planet NYC. Signed copies ARE available for mail order as of this posting, so jump on that. I’ve had the pleasure of reading the book and (straight up, no hyperbole) it’s SUPERB. It’s also one of the prettiest books you will ever buy, should you choose to do so.

6pm Friday November 22nd

Warren Ellis event signing Forbidden Planet New York City NYCWarren Ellis signing. If I was the kind of jerk who wrote crap like “Nuff said” I would write “Nuff said” regarding our Warren Ellis event. No offense intended to the beloved writers, artists, singers, magicians, freakshow performers, internationally famous rock bands- what have you- who rocked Forbidden Planet events in 2013, but THIS WILL BE OUR BIGGEST SIGNING OF THE YEAR.

CON BONANZA!

Maybe you’re going to the New York Comic Con this weekend, maybe you aren’t. IF you AREN’T, then I am sorry. I’m not either. Forbidden Planet is available to soften the blow with the very best in comic, manga, games, books, t-shirts, magazines and more! Why not pick up IDW’s Mars Attacks Judge Dredd #2, or Shoalin Cowboy #1 from Dark Horse to pick up the spirits! If your eyes like a safer faire, dive into X-Men #6, Deadpool #18 or DC’s Astro City #5 and Superman Wonder Woman #1?

But if you ARE going? Here’s a fun treat!

Unkiedev’s New York Comic Con Scavenger Hunt 2013!

“WOW, a fun scavenger hunt I can go on with my friends at the con?” That’s right, anonymous stranger!  Take a picture of each of these items, post them to facebook or instagram with the #unkiedev and I’ll send the winner a fabulous prize. Really, the point is NOT the fabulous prize (I mean, I’ve seen it…it’s ok.) but the fun you’ll have tearing through the convention like a lunatic experiencing the con like a sugar fueled lab rat!

25. PHOTO OF COSPLAY FROM THE NEW DOCTOR WHO.

Yep, the rumors are true, they’ve found several new episodes of Doctor Who lost to time in an Ethiopian garage. With the amount of showy Whovians about, and with this being the first big Comic Con since the episodes became digitally available, some cleaver cosplaying tardis rider will dress up as one of these new, obscure characters from the lost episodes. Get their photo online first and YOU could have your own viral photo!

24. PHOTO OF A STORM TROOPER AT THE URINAL.

I bet they even miss the bowl.

23.  PHOTO OF ROGAN JOSH OF MOD HERO.

Mod Hero is the sensational design label of comic book art featuring bold colors and a classic, space age design. They are the hard yet glorious labor of the brilliant ROGAN JOSH, artist extraordinaire. Do make your way to Josh’s booth, #1577, where a veritable paradise of comic inspired prints awaits your approval. Bring him this write-up regarding his unstoppable awesomeness and I’m SURE he’ll laugh. There you go, YOU made somebody happy today! Good for you!

MOD HERO! Come for the scavenger hunt, stay for the Hawkgirl pinup!

22.  A COPY OF THE CHUCKLING WHATSIT

Halloween is fast approaching, and this is one of Unkiedev’s TOP RECOMMENDED creepy books to surl up with in front of a fire. Richard Sala’s bizarre twists and spooky turns are playful yet deadly, cute  but disturbing. An investigator looks into the hand crafted keepsakes of a former serial killer who would braid his victims hair and skin into small, laughing dolls.

The Comic Con IS still about comics, you know?! It’s a great place to track down fun back issues and obscure graphic novels you might not be able to fins anywhere else. Chuckling Whatsit belongs on the book shelf of any lover of macabre tales and haunted doings.

21. A HUGE PILE OF FREE CON SWAG

We all know that whoever dies with the biggest pile of free Comic Con swag wins, right? It’s as true in this scavenger hunt as it is in real life. NOTE: Forbidden Planet is not legally responsible for wrongful death in the case of any fatalities as a result of this scavenger hunt.

20. PHOTO OF ELEKRTA KISSIG BIG DADDY FROM BIOSHOCK

Won’t you help out a girl with daddy issues?

ENJOY

There’s more where that came from, and you’ll just have to visit the rarely updated unkiedev.com to find the rest of your New York Comic Con 2013 scavenger hunt items! Thanks for playing, and no matter if you are or aren’t attending the con this weekend, make sure you have a great weekend!

Spawn of Unkiedev

So last Thursday my wife gave birth to our first child. #Overrated. I had always thought that my son would have a great love of comics like his old man. So far Unkiedev Jr. likes only two things: chaos and nipples.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s my kind of guy. I’m slightly worried that he’s a vampire, as he sleeps all day and, much like a Lost Boy, parties all night. My suspicions were NOT quelled when the nurse told us that the newborn feeds on milk which Momma synthesizes from her blood.

Diagnosis: Vampire.

BAD ATTITUDE

There’s a catch-22 to being the new father to a geek baby. Unless your particular brand of geek chic is compulsively collecting swaddling clouts, there is not a single aspect of our collections that are baby safe.

Now that I have a baby I have to put my autographed Michael Dorn Bat’leth in storage. Apparently, avenging one’s blood honor is not “Age Appropriate.” All my thousands of brightly colored LEGO pieces, GONE. My friend was going to give me, no joke, an unopened Masterpiece Skywarp Transformer he had an extra of. Needless to say, that ain’t happening now.

I’m starting to think the Missus wanted a child just so she could have the spare bedroom cleaned.

LIVING THE DREAM

We collect these vast storehouses of awesome in order to pass them on to our progeny, but in order to have room for a safe baby, half of it has to go.

Sometimes it’s easy to know what to toss in order to make room for baby. I was about to throw out my run of Civil War when who should walk out of a time vortex but my baby, now 53 and sporting a sweet robotic arm and dashing facial scar. He said that the number one comic character of the future is CLOR, and that our family’s slow decline into cannibalistic madness starts with me throwing his first appearance out.

“Good to know,” I said, as I lit them on fire. Look, I’ve watched enough Doctor Who to recognize a Living Skin Doppelganger when I see one.

RAGE

This process of distillation is healthy and natural. The most beautiful Bonsai trees are created from careful pruning.

When my son is 16 he’s going to want this red leather slipcase of Kingdom Come in order to ironically make himself feel better that girls think he’s nerdy, but I don’t think he, or anybody else in 16 years, is going to want a DVD set of New Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5. Some things are better left unseen.

That is all from Unkiedev and family. I have to go… Baby is crying his eyes out. I think he just found out they’re making The Hobbit movies a trilogy.

All our breast. I mean best. Either way, all of it.

NEXT WEEK: Guest columnist Alternate Timeline Unkiedev Jr. will tell us all what makes CLOR so special.

LOEG Century 2009

We’re halfway through 2012, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Century: 2009 is finally here to close out Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s examination of the past hundred years.  And a doozy of a century it was, my friends.  From horse-and-buggy to the convertible to an abandoned and starving space program.  From rifles to nukes to drones.  What fun!  It’s the opinion of Moore and O’Neill that our fictions are currently in as much of a shambles as our economy and environment. While I don’t entirely agree, 2009 makes the point nicely.

Century has been criticized by some as inferior to previous volumes of the League, often because it simply isn’t as accessible.  While the first two volumes focused on a well-known cast of characters, many of whom have been portrayed often in film and television, Century veered into more esoteric territory, taking much of its cast from short stories and ’60s British crime films, as well as taking heavy inspiration of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s Three-Penny Opera.  Furthermore 1910 and 1969 both felt unfocused – the character’s were never sure of their mission, and failed to have much effect, especially in 1910.

Much of that is reversed in 2009 – all the cards are on the table, the end is nigh, and the antagonist is one that every modern reader and moviegoer has at least a passing familiarity with.  If you don’t know it is yet I won’t give it away, but I will tell you that he uses his “wand” in some new ways here.  Along with cameos from Dr. Who, Charlie’s Angels, and every James Bond ever, Prospero puts in his first appearance since Black Dossier, as does another major player you’ll recognize.

The criticism of modern fiction is also more focused, and raises some worthwhile questions.  One of the character’s calls modern fiction “banal and reassuring,” which shouldn’t be a shock to anyone, but it still bears repeating.  Century also raises the issue of whether or not by changing the stories we tell each other, we can change the world we live in.  And that needs doing.

Empowered Strikes Back!

WE INTERUPT OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED COLUMN FOR A BRIEF, FANTASTIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Adam Warren’s AMAZING good girl comic book, Empowered is back this week with volume 7! Forbidden Planet has copies of the previous volumes for folks to get caught up on, and we HIGHLY recommend that you do. Empowered is a Tootsie Pop of human behavior; On the surface it is the continuous adventures of a scantily clad super heroine who just wants to earn respect; though she finds herself perpetually abducted, disrobed, and tied to chairs. Below that teeth-rotting candy coating of distracting sugar is a deep, chocolaty center of frailty, insight, and nuance.

Good writing check! GREAT art, check! Incredible characters and hilarious humor? You KNOW that’s a check! Empowered Vol. 7 is out THIS week, with previous volumes available HERE at the Forbidden Planet! We now return you to your regularly scheduled column, already in progress-

FEED RESUMES IN 3,2,1-

-because I couldn’t reach the tweezers. NOW I’m stuck inside of an igloo with no means of escape, but at least I’m not dressed as a pretzel any longer. True story.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #39 drops this week, as does the Batman Annual, and while BOTH look great, only one re-introduces Mr. Freeze into the new 52 Universe. Buy them both to see which one.

I’ve been loving the new Nickelodeon “Avatar, the Legend of Korra” cartoon, but new adventures of my favorites from Avatar, The Last Airbender” are very welcome into my igloo! Dark Horse has volume 2 of Avatar, The Promise, which features Ang and Toph rescuing metal benders from rogue Fire Nation tribes on the brink of War!

Angel and Faith #10 also hits the shelves, and speaking of TV shows:

Merch Point

The Avengers movie is AWESOME, you have to go see it right now! Well, it was alright. Actually, I kinda’ didn’t like it. I know that’s strange, I mean, the director has done such impressive work, and it had that REALLY hot girl in it…what was her name? Dang it, it’s on the tip of my tongue. You know, she has the crazy red hair and the skin-tight cat suit. UMA THURMAN, that’s the gal.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about…folks have said that the Hulk steals the show, but he wasn’t even IN this picture. Plus, and let’s be honest, it was cool seeing Sean Connery, but the whole weather dominator thing was a little hokey.

I just felt like I wasn’t seeing the same movie as the critics.

WHAT NOW?

Did you know that the Forbidden Planet has a plethora of other, totally fun and non-Avengers related products that you can purchase and enjoy while you try to fill the empty shell that is the wasted time in your life between rewatchings of the Avenger’s movie?

OF COURSE YOU KNEW. You had to walk in the door just to pick this newsletter up, right (or maybe you’re reading this on our blog, between reviews for many of these fine non-Avengers related products)? You must have seen all the kick-ass stuff littering the display cases, shelves and walls. Did you need Doctor Who TARDIS salt and pepper-shakers? Do you need an officially licensed Hellboy or Buffy Ouiji Board? Do you need recreations of old hot rod plastic model kits?

You need it as much as you need this week’s Wonder Woman comic, or the new issue of Amazing Spider-Man. If only there was a place which had new comics AND fun, geeky chotskis, plus t-shirts, GI Joes and spiffy card games.

UPSTAIRS, and yes, I am aware that, to some of you, it is news there is an upstairs; there are card games, role playing games, dice games and MORE! In fact, the upstairs alone is a role playing game…you pretend that you’re a customer looking for nifty manga, and we pretend that we’re clerks. In reality we’re hard-light holograms, and the entire store is one giant holodeck. Continue reading
