An X-MAS Tale!

The portal opened five feet from his left, and Wolverine watched the lanky, muscled frame of his former teammate and friend step out onto the snowy grounds of the Jean Gray School for Gifted Students. Cyclops looked grim as usual, and travelled with a dusty satchel. Wolverine couldn’t remember the last time he had seen Scott Summers smile.

“I’m here, Logan.” Cyclops said, looking around for traps. “What is it you needed? Make it quick, I’m a wanted man.”

Wolverine uncrossed his arms and stepped forward. “I’ve been one too, Cyke, many times. After awhile, being out in the cold gets to ya’.” Scott just nodded, and so Wolverine continued. “Remember that first Christmas back at the Mansion with Chucky, Kitty, Peter and Kurt? We all laughed watchin’ Storm give the Professor Snow-Fros?”

“That was a long time ago,” Cyclops said, and instantly struggled with a thought. How long ago was that? Sometimes it feels like it was Thirty years ago, but it may have been only Five.

“If there’s one thing you learn while being an X-Man, it’s that time can always be changed.” Wolverine half smiled, and reached behind a nearby statue. He pulled out a box, brightly wrapped in red and green candy cane printed paper.

It was an X-Mas present from one X-Man to an Ex-X-Man.

Cyclops opened the box with hesitant hands. Years of battle hardened ambushes had trained him to be wary of gifts. What lay inside the present surprised him more than any bomb, alien parasite or severed head of a beloved comrade.

Inside the box was a case of custom made, ruby quartz contact lenses. Enough to last an entire year.

“Merry X-Mas, Slim.” growled Wolverine. “Hank helped with the design. I wonder why we’ve never thought of this before.”

“Logan,” choked Scott, “It’s-. I don’t know what to say.” Embarrassed, he turned and reached into his travel bag, taking out a brightly wrapped box of his own. Wolverine was stunned. He did not expect this…because this story takes place now. If this was the 80’s or 90’s, they would have said Wolverine could pre-smell the present with his heightened senses, but nobody remembers that power set anymore.

“I had hoped your message was sincere, so I came prepared. Thanks for forgiving me for killing Professor X. Again.” Cyclops laughed.

“Ah, heck, Slim. Who hasn’t killed that bald S.O.B. once or twice. Now what have we here,” Wolverine asked, opening the gift. He, too, was surprised because again- no heightened sense of smell.

Rogue, Jubilee, X-Men cartoon

Inside was an Adamantium claw sharpener with a jar of Adamantium claw polish. Wolverine smiled. Cyclops did the same. Somewhere a jolly, fat elf was Ho-Hoed. They both started to laugh.

“You know, Scott, this gift is the most thoughtful thing anyone’s ever given me,” Wolvie sighed, “And as useless as a Metrocard for Nightcrawler. You see-” and what followed was a sickening SHLACK sound, as the bloody stumps of bones broke through Wolverine’s hands. “I sold my Adamantium claws and skeleton to a scrap dealer in order to afford the Ruby Quartz Contacts.”

Tears started to swell in Scott Summers’ eyes, as he broke into a silly grin. “Of course. That seems like our luck, Logan, because you see-” He paused. Red streaks started to roll down his cheeks. Tears of blood were flowing fast now, as Cyclops removed his visor, revealing the ruined cavities of his former weapons. “I sold my eyes to a mutant organ harvester in order to afford the Adamantium claw sharpener.”

They laughed, cried, hugged and bled all over each other there in the snow, both laughing at the magic of Christmas. They soon both passed out from blood loss and died of exposure.

MERRY X-MAS!

Holy Holiday! It’s a Batman Gift Idea List!

If I had to make a list of the most recognizable figures in the entire world I think that Batman would be in the top 10. Maybe even the top 5. That brooding big eared bad boy probably lies somewhere on the list below Jesus Christ, but above Norman Reedus. So… chances are, someone on your Christmas shopping list is a Bat-Fan! Now I know I just said Batman is one of the most well known figures, yes… but… that doesn’t mean I expect you to know what to get the Boy Wonder of your Dynamic Duo for this holiday season. Those are references to Batman, stick with me kid and you’ll be dancing with the devil by the pale moonlight in no time!

Batman The Killing Joke – The super duper deluxe re-colored hardcover edition of the definitive Joker story written by that Watchmen guy. Quote me on that when handing this bad boy over to your gift recipient and they will be wowed by your knowledge!

DCD356988

Batman is Brave! – It’s never too early to get the tykes into vigilante crime fighting. This is one of those old school kids books with the thick cardboard pages, the kind that sops up baby drool real good!

978147951687290000

Batman and Joker Salt and Pepper Shakers – Just a dash of the right spices from out of one of these magnetic shakers will add a little BIFF BANG and POW to your super supper. Just don’t ask me how the magnets work.

748787255311

Batman 1966 1/4 scale Figure – Fans of the classic Batman television series will just love to get their grip on all 18 inches of Adam West in those iconic grey tights!

634482612422

Batman The Court of Owls TPB – The first collection of the newest ongoing Batman run now available in a sleek affordable softcover edition. Issues one through seven of Scott Snyder’s take on the cape for only 16.99. Now that’s a lot of Bats on the cheap!

9781401235420

Big Batman Logo Button – Lets take a ride down memory lane… It’s the summer of 89 and the Tim Burton Batman movie is the biggest thing to happen to pop culture since the Moonwalk. No not that fake moon landing stuff, I mean Jack-o dancing back-o… wards? Anyway… what I’m trying to say is, Batman was huge and you know what else was huge in the 80’s – buttons. I blame it on Bobby McFerrin’s Be Happy BS and those smiley faces, but I digress. So we see the flick and as my family exits the theater I remember people selling all types of bootleg bat-stuff including these gigantic Batman logo buttons! I’m talking real big, like hubcap big, but maybe my memory has been fogged by years of fogging my brain, maybe they were just kinda big like this one and they just seemed big cause I was small… needless to say my parents didn’t buy me one of those buttons and I now have to write x-mas shopping list guides as a way to work out my mommy issues.

DCB02

Heroclix Batman Booster Pack – In a world where underground crime rings and table top gaming collide! Heroclix is one of the most accessible and down right fun collectible games on the market, so grab up some of these booster packs and get a game going! Don’t worry, house rules are acceptable.

634482706572

Batman Animated Series Logo Shirt – Batman the Animated series was another huge factor in securing Batman’s image firmly in the consciousness of the modern world. If you know someone who was coming to age in the mid 90’s chances are this “cartoon” was their daily dose of the Dark Knight. This grey shirt with that iconic angular logo will be a fitting gift for that special Bat-Maniac in your life.

TS100

Well there you have it Bat Boys and Bat Girls, just a few of the many Bat related goodies we have in stock and ready to be gifted by you! I’m pretty proud of myself, a full holiday shopping guide and only one Insane Clown Posse reference. Bloop!

Santa, Maybe

No matter how hard the lefties, the pagans, the communists, the gays, and every other group I belong to tries to stop it, Christmas is still happening. Glycon knows I’ve done my part! I personally punched out three mall Santas this week. I think they were mall Santas. They had beards and were wearing red…of course, I am color blind. And I think I was in a mall…

I remember I was drinking single malt whiskey mixed with lighter fluid at a Burl Ives look alike contest and then I kinda’ blacked out. Hmm.

The point is, you people will need to get some holiday shopping done soon and Forbidden Planet wants to build a scale replica of a Sentinel to keep those mutant kids from loitering out front.

UNKIEDEV’S GIFTS FOR PEOPLE YOU KNOW AND LIKE PT.1

Without a doubt my number 1 recommended gift for the holidays this year is The Incredible Hulk #2, out from Marvel this week. WHY? Because The Hulk is punching giant, green, great white sharks while simultaneously being eaten alive by these self-same, paradoxically-pigmented Green Great Whites. For the full awesome of that sentence to sink in on you I’ll pause here a moment so you may read it again.

Can I judge a book by its cover? YES, when that cover features gamma-radiated sharks fighting the Hulk, YES I CAN.

The latest Hulk comic has been cool. Marc Silvestri (with Whilce Portacio and other friends) have been turning out some really nice pages, and Jason Aaron seems to get the fun of a good Hulk story. The Hulk is best when there’s A) lots of monsters and B) weird, high stakes.

The Hulk and Bruce Banner are separate entities, due to Fear Itself. Why? Who knows? I read the dang thing and I can’t seem to recall…but then, those Whiskey-Lighter Daiquiris do pack quite a wallop.
The Hulk is seems okay with it, living with the Moloids underground. He does, however, fear the big, nasty Fear Demon that turned him into a Hammer-wielding puppet this past summer. I can’t figure out what he’s complaining about…he got to rampage, smash puny humans, pretty much par for the course there. I guess Hulk no like hammers.

Banner, meanwhile, is brooding, has a brain tumor, and is engaging in some spectacular mad science that would make the Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s Dr. Weird look like Bill Nye. This is so he can recreate the Hulk. He wants the monster back.

THAT is where the story takes some suspension of disbelief. When you’ve got over forty years worth of continuity to deal with it is hard to keep some motivations clear, but the total about face of Banner WANTING the Hulk is jarring.

Fear Not. The Hulk is like a good hot dog; it should NEVER be over-analyzed. Continue reading

Morgan Pielli’s Pile of Mini’s: Stop Touching That Spaztic Colon!

I have burrowed my way to the center of the mini comics pile in search of the Mole King, who has made off with my girlfriend. Evidently I insulted the Mole Peoples’ widely held belief in the healing power of magical energy beams. So, as begin my journey into their labyrinthine network of narrow tunnels, I shall take a look at two of the comics that I brought along to keep me from succumbing to Space Madness (madness born from the lack thereof): Continue reading

Krampus and the Super Moon

This is one of the more interesting titles hitting the shelves this week.

From Last Gasp, Krampus the Devil of Christmas hardcover by Monte Beauchamp.

Now available in Hardcover! In the early Christmas traditions of Europe, the “Krampus” was St. Nicholas’ dark servant – a hairy, horned, supernatural beast whose pointed ears and long slithering tongue gave misbehavers the creeps! This new and improved edition includes an introduction, a historical survey of the character, and over 180 lavish pre-World War 1 Krampus postcard images.

Now get off your computer, go outside and check out that SUPER MOON, but keep off the moors.

  • Can’t think of that perfect gift for the comics-savvy person/people on your shopping list? Tom Spurgeon (aka The Comics Reporter) has some great suggestions.
  • Perennial all-ages bestseller Bone has some mighty stiff competition from Amulet this year.
  • You may have seen in an earlier post that Lynda Barry came by the shop last week and signed all our copies of her new book, Picture This.  Pick yours up while we have stock, or contact us for mail-order availability.  There’s something else… What was it?  Oh yeah, the book was also favorably reviewed  in The New York Times last week.
