Countdown to New York Comic Con part 1

By Chris Troy

HOWDY FPNYC FAITHFUL!  We are only a few short days away from New York Comic Con, and as of the time of writing, FPNYC is SOLD OUT of all passes for the biggest comic & pop culture convention on the Northeastern Coast (Fairly certain east coast as well, but there’s a small chance that I may be wrong). Myself and Loran will be at the con all weekend (well Loran for a day), covering the convention for Bleedingcool.com and tweeting 140 character one liners over at @anarchris if you want to keep tabs on the convention and see what X-Men related characters I dress up as during the weekend (yup, cosplay is happening).

For the first time at the  convention, Hasbro is finally showing NYCC some love by hooking the con up with not 1, but 2 Marvel exclusives for the show. Representing the Marvel Universe line is the “Compound Hulk“, who appeared in a single issue of Jeff Parker‘s current run of “The Hulk” title. Much like the silver age Composite Superman-Batman, Compound Hulk is half Green Hulk, half Red Hulk, possibly the strongest there is. Possibly. And why SDCC got a exclusive Avengers themed Mini-Mugg box set, NYCC gets one based on the 90s crossover “Maximum Carnage.” This mini-5 packs gives us Carnage, Eddie Brock/Venom, Spider-Man, Demogoblin, and J. Jonah Jameson, with mean this 5 pack is a menace and a threat (to my wallet!), and well worth the money already. Continue reading

My little Vigilantes.

By Chris Troy

Another Chris-written article, which means you should expect this to be super-hero toy heavy. In my defense, 90% of the articles Loran have written as of late have been Transformers based and FPNYC IS a comic shop, so my topic is warranted, given our average customers interest. And I do talk about the occasional Revoltech and statue from time to time. Anywho, “My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic” is apparently the new hottness, as “Bronies” (This is a legit nickname apparently. I think there’s a article up on Wired.com that confirms such) are going bonkers over the latest version of a cartoon that aims for little girls, or women who grew up with the original series. Regardless of my personal taste, we have a selection of MLP toys in, which apparently are hard to find on most toys shelves, so if you’re into Ponies, we have them. Feel free to come and lie to our cashiers that their for your daughter/niece/sister or some such (EDITOR’S NOTE: like how the rest of us say that these action figures are for our nephew. I try not to throw stones when my own house is made of nerdobe).

Speaking of children’s cartoons and the man-children who love them, the first wave of Young Justice action figures have hit the shelves. They stand in at about 3 & 3/4 inches each, and sport about 4-5 points of articulation each. The first wave consists of YJ members Kid Flash and Aqualad, Speedy (before he changes his identity to the much cooler sounding Red Arrow) and the villain Icicle Jr., which is a terrible name for a super-villain in my opinion. Each figure comes with an accessory of sorts- Icicle Jr with a glacier sword for cold-stabbings, Aqualad with a water-katana, Speedy with a bow and Kid Flash with….fast food….which is a terrible joke and an odd accessory. Also the 3 hero characters each come with a piece of the Hall of Justice, which if you buy the entire line, you have a backdrop for the figures. A cool little twist and the build-a-figure formula. These figures are a cool spiritual follow up to the Justice League Unlimited line and I believe are in-scale with them as well. Continue reading

Short packed: American Avengers, non-moving parts and 2 packs

By Chris Troy

Happy 4th of July FPNYC faithful. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be drunk by 2, bbqing and watching Battlestar Galatica on Netflix. Maybe some fireworks. I dunno, Battlestar is really good and fireworks may require me to leave my apartment. Either way, with less than 20 days until Marvel Studios’ “Captain America“, today’s the best day to do your patriotic Nerd duty and swing by the store or the website and pick up some Cap swag. We have a huge selection of comics, shirt, toys and other Cap-based merch in stock, so finding something relevant to your all-American interests won’t be too hard! Also keep your eyes out for the upcoming “Captain America” #1 by Ed Brubaker and Steve McNiven, continuing Ed’s fantastic run on Cap’s book. The current Cap series is getting a new co-writer Marc Andreyko with pencils by the underrated and awesome Chris Samnee. Both books are definitely worth the money, but I have to admit I’m more excited for the Bru/Andreyko/Samee book for the insane amount of talent attached to the title. Continue reading
