Last night I finally finished watching AMC’s The Walking Dead television show. I know I’m way behind, but I don’t have cable and was having a hard time getting to someone’s house, with cable, who also wanted to watch this. After the first two episodes it just didn’t seem worth the effort to be at a certain place, at a specific time, each week. Now this had nothing to do with the quality of the show, honestly, I enjoyed what I saw. I mean how can you not be into zombies like this…

But… Wait for the home-viewing options I said, and I did, with great anticipation. I just seem to enjoy TV a lot more when it’s not… well… actually on TV. Lucky was I to walk in on my roommates watching it on Zune last night. So yeah I finished it and I really dug it, in-fact I even enjoyed the parts I already saw more this time around. My only real complaint is there was not enough Michael Rooker. I have a feeling this may not be the case in future seasons.

So I will have to make sure to get the DVD (yes, I occasionally do buy DVD’s) when it comes out on March 8th cause you know I gotta see all the bonus features and deleted scenes and what not. For your convenience both the DVD and Blu-ray editions of Season 1 are up on our site (www.fpnyc.com) for pre-order at a killer price. Even more convenient is the fact that I linked the product pages to the words DVD and Blu-ray in the last sentence, and this one for that matter. While you’re at it check out the rest of The Walking Dead stuff we got, cause we gots alot… t-shirts, comics, graphic novel collections in soft and hardcover editions. So make an effort, pre-order the DVD, read the comic, and most importantly… survive!

It’s official. According to Variety shooting on the Frank Darabont-helmed Walking Dead series (not just a pilot, as previously reported) will begin shortly, and is scheduled to air this coming October.

AMC has ordered a total of six episodes of the series that revolves around a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Darabont penned and directed the pilot and will exec produce with Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Motion Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion, which will be funded entirely inhouse by AMC parent Rainbow Media. Charles Eglee, a seasoned TV drama showrunner, has also boarded the project as an exec producer…

AMC… ultimately decided to go straight to series after hearing Darabont’s vision for a six-episode arc… ‘He’s taken the baseline road map of the underlying material and just blew it out to the next level,’ said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s senior veep of programming, production and digital content. ‘There’s stuff in there that will make the people who love the comics very happy and some surprises in there as well.’

Exciting, eh?

UPDATE: I just learned to spell “Walking!”

So, AMC has finally announced the premiere of their reboot of the classic Science Fiction series. This update has Number 6 (Jim Caviezel) retired to The Village where Ian McKellan’s Number 2 controls everything with a smile on his face and a giant bubble. The miniseries will be a three parter starting November 15th, and will last three nights.

Above is an extended look of the series, and AMC hosts the entire original series on their website. Which I highly encourage you to check out.

Looks like Robert Kirkman’s critically acclaimed series “Walking Dead” will be getting the pilot treatment from Frank Darabont and will hopefully air on AMC. According to Variety, the “Green Mile” writer/director is very close to a deal to adapt this series for AMC:

Joel Stillerman, AMC’s senior veep of programming, production and original content, said the project appealed to the cabler because of “the quality of the storytelling” in Kirkman’s work. The series will stay faithful to the tone of the original novels, he said.

“This is not about zombies popping out of closets,” Stillerman said. “This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world (in ‘Walking Dead’) is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way.”

Good to hear, people keep on recommending me this book, but I could never get into it. Considering Darabont is handling it and he also handled another prison movie, “The Shawshank Redemption” I can’t figure how this won’t come out gangbusters with him at the helm.

Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Prisoner, and now this? Very forward thinking, AMC. You’re quickly becoming my favorite channel.

TV Squad covered the Prisoner panel which had star Jim Caviezel and producer/writer Bill Gallagher as guests. They showed a nine minute clip from the miniseries, and this is the impression blogger John Scott Lewinski had:

Also, the design of the new Village captures that creepy, soulless atmosphere of the planned housing community. The Village is evidently located in a massive desert, and its architecture wears the bland coloring and polished uniformity of the newer areas of Las Vegas or Phoenix. The only atmosphere is no atmosphere, and that was a stroke of genius by the art department.

Still, I could tell little else from the preview footage. Worse still, Gallagher had a line during the open discussion that makes me worry: “McGoohan’s (Prisoner) was about the assertion of the individual. Mine was more, ”What if the arrogance of the individual became our undoing?’”

First of all, this is still McGoohan’s Prisoner. It may be updated, but the premise belongs to him — no matter how a new writer seeks to possess and re-present it.

Second, if Gallagher’s remarks are an indication of the thematic soul of the show, it’s as far removed from McGoohan’s Prisoner as it could possibly be. I’m left with a nightmare vision of a Prisoner urging the individual viewer to act in the best interests of society or the state. Please tell me this isn’t going to be a 2009 Hollywood’s populist wet-down on a classic celebration of individual will and rights. The Prisoner should rise above current politics and examine greater themes of philosophy and civilization.

This is an intriguing observation for me. What I took away from the series, and I only recently re-watched it having seen some episodes way back in sixth grade, was about personality control. It was about conformity, and how a given society forces us to conform to values that are inherent to survive in that atmosphere. Number 2′s struggle was to break out of the conformity imposed upon him, and was about defining his own person. I feel like the show was literally the birthplace of the thought “being more than just a number” that I found was often used when deciding on colleges. Where kids wanted to go to smaller schools rather than big ones with class sizes numbering in the hundreds.
