Storms!

Every week I look forward to being mugged by an invisible assailant right in plain view of others. I have always found this gentleman thief, though thorough, to be fair. Maybe you’ve been robbed blind by this same perp. Its name is Wednesday, a.k.a. “New Comics Day.” I like this perp.

Some people do not…and by people I mean “Satan.” He has decided that this New Comics Day will be complicated by evil and external forces. Storms, Floods, Rat Plagues and Halloween stand between you and giving us your money this Wednesday!

Usually, we here at Forbidden Planet are Pro-Satan, or at least Satan-ambivalent. This time, the big S has gone too far. This Wednesday, we need you to be very brave and come on back to the Forbidden Planet. We need you to shop for comics for Christ. Or for Satan. Whatever, we just want to make sure you get your comics. [Editor's note: This post was obviously written before we had to shut down for a week due to storm-related power outages. Sorry about that. Clearly Satan won this round.]

YEAH, WHAT ABOUT COMICS?

After 73 years, someone has finally figured out how to stop Superman. In this week’s Action Comics Annual #1, not only do we get to stare at Superman’s crotch and wish it was red, we also get to see the showdown between Superman and Kryptonite Man! There have been SEVERAL Kryptonite Men over the years, some with sleeves and some without. This NEW, Post Crisis, Post New 52 Kryptonite Man has not only NO SLEEVES, but no ARMS! BWA-HA-HA! He has some sort of Kryptonite arms! AH! SCARY!

Speaking of scary, Steve “30 Days of Night” Niles and the AMAZING Glenn Fabry have a new horror comic out this week from DC called Lot 13! It sounds great! THAT will really show Satan who’s boss! Jesus wants you to buy blood-puking horror comics! Jesus also wants you to buy Masters of the Universe: Origins of Skeletor #1 this Wednesday, too. Or Satan does. I forget…hum.

We better pick up as many horror comics as we can in order to play the field.  I’ll be picking up the latest Ghostbusters Ongoing #14, then Vampirella #24, Happy #2 and, uhm,  New Mutants #50…those are horror comics, right?

I KNOW! The perfect compromise! Mars Attacks Holiday Special #1 should keep both sides of the religious fence appeased. Besides, I think the Martians are agnostics.

STORMY WEATHER

There is positively no storm, nor flood, nor rat plague that could keep me from Happy #2, A + X #1 or Ultimate Spider-Man 2 #18.

And no amount of Trick or Treaters is going to prevent me from picking up T-Shirts, figures, trade paperbacks and spectacular comics. As a matter of fact, neither Hurricane Sandy, Jesus/Satan, Rat Plagues, nor apathy will stop me from getting my butt to the Forbidden Planet and letting that perfect thief, Wednesday, from picking my pocket!

NEXT WEEK: Rebuilding New York City after Hurricane Sandy using only the lessons we can glean from comic books.

DC/DC

DC has a few small comics coming out this week, no big deal. Just, you know, a couple of home-brewed, indie titles you might not care about…they’re so small and insignificant, they’ll prolly only sell a couple of copies. S’no biggie…just, uhm-

BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN #1 AND EARTH-2 #2 FEATURING GAY PEOPLE! CALL THE MEDIA! PUT DOWN THAT SANDWICH! YOWZA, GO GET EVERYBODY!

FAIR IS FAIR

Unkiedev is by no means anti-gimmick. If DC put out a comic book with 3D glasses so Batman’s pointy ears were coming right at’cha, or a scratch and sniff cover of Superman’s armpit, I would be the first in line to buy. I do have a problem, however, with lying.

For DC to pretend that Watchmen sequels, prequels, and any other “uels,” is anything more than an excuse to let today’s top talents play in Alan Moore’s sandbox while we the audience get to look on for a nominal fee, they are blowing smoke up our collective kilts.

Listen DC, just don’t tell me this is because you feel there’s an insatiable desire for the compelling stories that may arise. A gimmick is a gimmick. Be honest.

Unkiedev is, as well, not opposed to capitalism. If it was good enough for Ben “Master Turkey Baster” Franklin, it’s good enough for yours truly. I WANT the comic book industry to make money, to thrive and survive. I want great comic book shops like Forbidden Planet to keep the lights on and the registers ringing. I want super-talented writers and artists to earn their living in the industry I love.

I just wish we didn’t need to stoop so low as new Watchmen comics in order to put a dent into the collective attention of mainstream audiences. Breakaway titles, such as Walking Dead, 30 Days of Night, Scott Pilgrim, and Kick-Ass have proven that comics still play just as well to the masses when given the proper room to shine!

AND FOR THE RECORD, Unkiedev is not opposed to being a hypocrite. I will eat an entire bag of Frito corn chips and tell you, all the while, that I hate them. I can’t stand smoking…except for cigars, and pipes, and the occasional “jazz cigarette.”

With one hand I will be waving a finger at myself, accusing “shame” with every waggle as my other hand passes the cash to the cashier in order to get my copy of Before Watchmen The Minutemen #1.

I can hate the sin, and like the sinner, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to like these sinful comics despite myself.

QUEER AS SUPERFOLKS

Similarly, if DC’s publicity department hasn’t ruined the surprise for you, an old DC stalwart is coming out of the titanium closet in Earth-2 #2. I WON’T BE TELLING YOU WHO, but here’s a hint: it’s not LOBO. The New York Times and several other media outlets have beaten me to that punch, but I will be asking a few questions.

Why couldn’t this have happened sooner? Why couldn’t it happen to a current character, not an Earth-2 reboot character? Why did DC feel the need to tell every paper in town about their “little secret?” Is this about storytelling or marketing?

Comics is a business, I can accept that. Marvel made a big public splash getting ink off of the gay marriage between the Alpha-Flight member Northstar and his boyfriend, and Archie comics did the same with their token GLBT character Kevin Keller.

When Marvel announced a few years back that old-timey western comics hero the Rawhide Kid was gay it seemed less like a marketing ploy and more like an interesting story. NOTE TO ANYONE WHO READ THOSE ISSUES: too bad it wasn’t a good story.

And that’s the point. I will support my favorite comics companies, their books, and the stores that sell them…I just wish the industry was getting ink in the press over great stories and not gimmicks, reruns, and controversies.

New Comics 7/14/10

by Unkiedev

Aspen comics have managed to publish a comic book WITHOUT a half-naked lady on the cover! This is an impressive feat for them, one sure to turn over some long standing bets with bookies keeping tabs on such things.

It’s called Scourge #0 and it’s written by X-Men scribe of old Scott Lobdell. Lobdell is one of those writers who I rather despised at the time, but who’s work still seems readable, almost fun and innocent now.

Apparently the Scourge is about people in New York City turning into gargoyles. I think there’s entire internet-chat rooms for people with that particular kink. Continue reading

The Politics of Comics: Comolitics

The Politics of Comics: ComoliticsThe comic book world is like America’s political system. For the most part we have a two party system, with DC/Marvel standing in for the bigger political parties. Luckily for us, strong third parties such as Image and Dark Horse carry more industry clout than the libertarians, Green Party or Bull-Moosers EVER did.

Let’s look at the comics shipping this week alone, shall we?

QUALITY MERCH

Marvel is giving everybody a humor bail out this week, as this week’s fantastic double dip of the Deadpool: the merc with a mouth will have you dying of laughter and stab wounds. First Wade Wilson joins the X-men in Deadpool #17, and then it’s time for Amazing Spider-Man #611, with Spidey & Deadpool sitting in a tree, K-I-L-L-I-N-G! Deadpool is everywhere. Who does that guy think he is, Wolverine? Continue reading
