Tuesday Feb. 11th @ 4:30 Meet the star and filmmakers of Lucky Bastard!

Ever wonder what it would be like to sleep with a porn star? On the surface it sounds fun, but think of the possible repercussions. Lucky for you there’s Lucky Bastard, the new NC-17 “found-footage” horror film from CAVU Pictures opening Valentine’s Day weekend at Cinema Village. Through it’s pseudo-documentary/reality television style Lucky Bastard lets you experience the thrill and fallout of such an event from the safety of your theater seat.

LuckyBastard_KeyArt_33_NB__

Tuesday, February 11th from 4:30 to 5:30 meet the star and creators of Lucky Bastard right here at Forbidden Planet NYC! The CAVU Pictures crew as well as lead actress Betsy Rue (My Bloody Valentine 3-D, Halloween II, True Blood) , Director Robert Nathan (Law & Order, ER), Co-Writer/Executive Producer Lukas Kendall (Film Score Monthly) and Producer Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall, Return of Swamp Thing, Sorceress) will be on hand giving out posters and signing autographs for FREE!

We have a few more tricks up our sleeves that are guaranteed to tickle your fancy! What if I told you that Forbidden Planet will be giving you the chance to win a pair of tickets to see Lucky Bastard? That would possibly make you a lucky bastard as well, huh!  Keep your eyes fixed on our Twitter and Facebook pages for your chance to win. Not computer savvy? Don’t fret, FP will also be giving away a pair tickets at our event on Tuesday! Tickets will be good for any of the screenings during it’s run at Cinema Village.

A little more info on the film…

LUCKY BASTARD is the found-footage story of a pornographic website that sponsors a contest for its subscribers—a contest in which the prize is having sex with a porn star. The entire film is shot from the point of view of the website’s cameras recording the on-screen and behind-the-scenes action.

At the center of the story are: porn star Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue); Mike (Don McManus), who owns the “Lucky Bastard” website; and Dave G. (Jay Paulson), the unsuspecting subscriber who wins the contest. The “Lucky Bastard” employees treat their work matter-of-factly. Mike once clearly had more serious artistic ambitions; now he shoots the “Lucky Bastard” website’s content. Ashley, his most popular performer, initially refuses to participate. She dismisses the contest as “sick,” knowing that the winner will eventually be humiliated by the experience. Ashley views herself as an entertainer supporting her two children; the contest is nothing she would call “adult entertainment.” Nevertheless, she gives in to Mike. The young contest winner, Dave G., quickly discovers himself to be a pawn in a game of commerce. When, as Ashley predicted, he becomes humiliated, his personality is transformed and he seeks revenge on his tormentors. In this world, where everyone is safe within its borders, an outsider poses the ultimate danger. Those who humiliated him will discover that humiliation as entertainment, now an American pastime, has consequences they could never have expected.

As a guy who managed an Adult Video store for 5 years, who also just so happens to be a huge horror fan, you can understand why this film speaks to me. I’m excited, to say the least!

Lucky Bastard is only playing for one week at the Cinema Village so make sure you mark your calendars!

Feb 14th – 20th at: 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7:15pm, 9:30pm

Filmmakers Robert Nathan and Lukas Kendall will be attending select screenings to intro the film and a partake in a few Q&A sessions, but the titillating lead Betsy Rue will only be appearing at Forbidden Planet!

Appearance Schedule:

Friday, Feb 14th after the 7:15pm – with filmmaker Robert Nathan, executive producer / co-writer Lukas Kendall & Producer Jim Wynorski

Friday, Feb 14th just the INTRO for the 9:30pm – with filmmaker Robert Nathan, executive producer / co-writer Lukas Kendall & Producer Jim Wynorski

Saturday, Feb 15th after the 5pm & 7:15pm – with filmmaker Robert Nathan, executive producer / co-writer Lukas Kendall, & Producer Jim Wynorski

Sunday, Feb 16th after the 5pm & 7:15pm – with filmmaker Robert Nathan & Producer Jim Wynorski

But wait, there’s more!

So if you come down to the store after you catch a screening of Lucky Bastard at the Cinema Village, all you gotta do is present your ticket stub before you check out and you’ll get a discount.

See you Tuesday for the event, and then hopefully again on Friday after you see the flick!

Holy Holiday! It’s a Batman Gift Idea List!

If I had to make a list of the most recognizable figures in the entire world I think that Batman would be in the top 10. Maybe even the top 5. That brooding big eared bad boy probably lies somewhere on the list below Jesus Christ, but above Norman Reedus. So… chances are, someone on your Christmas shopping list is a Bat-Fan! Now I know I just said Batman is one of the most well known figures, yes… but… that doesn’t mean I expect you to know what to get the Boy Wonder of your Dynamic Duo for this holiday season. Those are references to Batman, stick with me kid and you’ll be dancing with the devil by the pale moonlight in no time!

Batman The Killing Joke – The super duper deluxe re-colored hardcover edition of the definitive Joker story written by that Watchmen guy. Quote me on that when handing this bad boy over to your gift recipient and they will be wowed by your knowledge!

DCD356988

Batman is Brave! – It’s never too early to get the tykes into vigilante crime fighting. This is one of those old school kids books with the thick cardboard pages, the kind that sops up baby drool real good!

978147951687290000

Batman and Joker Salt and Pepper Shakers – Just a dash of the right spices from out of one of these magnetic shakers will add a little BIFF BANG and POW to your super supper. Just don’t ask me how the magnets work.

748787255311

Batman 1966 1/4 scale Figure – Fans of the classic Batman television series will just love to get their grip on all 18 inches of Adam West in those iconic grey tights!

634482612422

Batman The Court of Owls TPB – The first collection of the newest ongoing Batman run now available in a sleek affordable softcover edition. Issues one through seven of Scott Snyder’s take on the cape for only 16.99. Now that’s a lot of Bats on the cheap!

9781401235420

Big Batman Logo Button – Lets take a ride down memory lane… It’s the summer of 89 and the Tim Burton Batman movie is the biggest thing to happen to pop culture since the Moonwalk. No not that fake moon landing stuff, I mean Jack-o dancing back-o… wards? Anyway… what I’m trying to say is, Batman was huge and you know what else was huge in the 80′s – buttons. I blame it on Bobby McFerrin’s Be Happy BS and those smiley faces, but I digress. So we see the flick and as my family exits the theater I remember people selling all types of bootleg bat-stuff including these gigantic Batman logo buttons! I’m talking real big, like hubcap big, but maybe my memory has been fogged by years of fogging my brain, maybe they were just kinda big like this one and they just seemed big cause I was small… needless to say my parents didn’t buy me one of those buttons and I now have to write x-mas shopping list guides as a way to work out my mommy issues.

DCB02

Heroclix Batman Booster Pack – In a world where underground crime rings and table top gaming collide! Heroclix is one of the most accessible and down right fun collectible games on the market, so grab up some of these booster packs and get a game going! Don’t worry, house rules are acceptable.

634482706572

Batman Animated Series Logo Shirt – Batman the Animated series was another huge factor in securing Batman’s image firmly in the consciousness of the modern world. If you know someone who was coming to age in the mid 90′s chances are this “cartoon” was their daily dose of the Dark Knight. This grey shirt with that iconic angular logo will be a fitting gift for that special Bat-Maniac in your life.

TS100

Well there you have it Bat Boys and Bat Girls, just a few of the many Bat related goodies we have in stock and ready to be gifted by you! I’m pretty proud of myself, a full holiday shopping guide and only one Insane Clown Posse reference. Bloop!

Faster, Empire! Strike! Strike! Figures by Silloff Now on Display at Forbidden Planet

Custom action figure artist extraordinaire Sillof was recently commissioned by comedian/actor Pattton Oswalt to create some suh-weeeeeeet toys… and Forbidden Planet has The Russ Meyer-inspired Star Wars mashup line Faster, Empire! Strike! Strike! on display!!!!

Patton Oswalt Siloff Faster Empire Milky Way Falcon

He wanted me to do the re-imagining thing I do but this time rather than an era or genre he wanted me to fuse the line with the wildly fun films of exploitation film maker Russ Meyer, in particular, with the film “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!”  He gave me a few ideas  but really left most of it up to my imagination (which is the way I prefer to work).  One catch, because most of Meyers films, 99.9% to be exact,  feature busty females protagonists Patton wanted me to gender flip every character making the characters I would usually make men into woman and vice versa.  He also had a specific vision involving a mini bar and a GTO.

Patton’s a regular at the shop and asked if we wanted to showcase Sillof’s work. Needles to say we graciously accepted the offer.  As Snagglepuss might say, “Jumped at the chance, even.”

Come on by and check out the line, and be sure to visit Sillof’s site for more fantastic custom figures!

The Semi-annual big ol’ look at Marvel toys

HUMBLE BRAG: PAX East is in a few days, which means next week I’ll have a fun little write up about the show next week. Insert your jealousy/rage/apathy/excitement here.

Happy St. Paddy’s day FPNYC Faithful! I thought about doing a special themed article tied into the holiday, but doing an all-green or all-Irish toy list would be lame, and writing up posts drunk is genuinely frowned upon. So instead the theme I’m going with will be “Oh man, lookit new Marvel toys”, a topic I am certainly super-familiar with.

We’ll start with taking a look at a pair of newish Non-Hasbro made Marvel figures! NCA is producing a line of 1/4th scale Avenger figures and is starting off with Captain America himself. It has the best likeness to Chris Evans to date (excluding the Hot Toys stuff) and stands at a whopping 18″. Articulation wise we’re looking at about 25-30 points overall. and when it comes to accessories, you get a pair of alternate hands and Cap’s iconic shield with functional straps. Not bad for about $90, but I wish the shade of blue they went with was a little darker.

And if you want something a little more high end, the Hot Toys Black Widow figure is currently in stock. Hot Toys could have been lazy and just reused their Iron Man 2 Widow, but no, the figure is all-new and rocks a super-eerie likeness to ScarJo herself. It’s actually a far superior figure overall when compared to her IM2 counterpart, and may be one of the BEST female Hot Toy releases to date. This amazing figure comes with a stand with her name on it, a Chitauri weapon, extra hands, 2 pistols, and alternate “Widow Bite” fists/gauntlets. It will set you back about $200, but these are Hot Toys. You pay for what you get.

The Marvel Universe line comes out swinging in 2013, with not only a new wave, but with 2 new 3-packs as well. The first MU wave has a few re-releases (Golden Age Cap, the Hulk in both classic and World War Hulk flavors, Beast and Ultimate Spidey), but makes up for it with some really obscure characters. There’s classic Angel (with a red and white variant), Nova (the Rich Rider Nova-Prime version), Nighthawk, the 80s version of Hercules (with a mace!) and Puck (with Snowbird in bird form). I’m a big fan of the Nova figure myself, but for a wave consisting mostly of B and C-listers, this is a solid set. For the “Greatest Team” 3-packs there’s 2 classic team being represented. The West Coast Avengers set comes with classic Hawkeye (a retooled Dark Avenger Hawkeye if I’m not mistaken) his then-wife, now ex, Mockingbird and War Machine ( a repaint from the IM2 comic line). The other team is the late 80s/early 90s X-men with brown and yellow Wolverine ( I think a reworked Dark Wolverine or one from that Cap/Logan two pace from a few years back, but  I could be wrong), Art Adams-era Longshot, classic Jim Lee era Rogue and X-baby Cyclops. Considering it’s 3 figures for a price that’s cheaper than buying them separately, it’s quite a deal.

Look at that, we’ve ran out of time and we didn’t even get a chance to even look at all the new Iron Man 3 stuffs! It’s like I planned it out this way for a future article or something…. (hehehe I r smart!).

MG Black Tri Stars Zaku II Build Log Part 1

Ah yes, the Master Grade Zaku version 2.0… I remember how excited everyone was for this kit five years ago. Back then I couldn’t accept the idea of a new design for the Zaku because I became so attached to the 08th MS Team’s Zaku. At the time, though, I didn’t really care to get a new Zaku Master Grade since, well, I didn’t really need one. I hadn’t gotten into Master Grades again, and something as basic as a Zaku didn’t really interest me.

Of course, that didn’t stop me from getting the Black Tri-Stars Zaku for only $45 when I saw it at a convention the following summer. What can I say, I’m a sucker for MSVs. I’m sure you all know that by now.

When I bought this kit, I immediately had a bit of buyer’s remorse. Yeah, the High Mobility Zaku is awesome, but why did the lead with the Tri-Stars version?? They’re nowhere near as cool as Johnny and Shin!! But I’ll explain why they lead with the Tri-Stars at the end of this series. For now, let’s look at the 2.0 Zaku itself, since pretty much everything I’ve built is shared between the other 2.0s.

The head is really cool! You build the entire mechanism with a “glass” screen over the monoeye. The monoeye moves when you turn the head back and forth. It’s much more effective than the little switch used on 1/144s.

I remember there being much debate over the location of the Zaku’s actual cockpit many years ago. One side of the chest houses the generator, while the other has the cockpit. This wouldn’t matter normally, except this was kind of an important plot point in the first episode of the original TV series. The solution? Make a cockpit that switches sides using a slider mechanism. It works pretty well! Brilliant idea on Bandai’s part.

The arms are incredibly nice, too. Both the shield AND the shoulder armor are molded as solid pieces (save for the spikes), making for a nice, clean piece. Obviously you still need to sand the seam but it’s not as hard as sanding a glued seam. The spikes are all separate pieces, which can be a pain to sand, but there are some sites that make metal replacements which I’ll be looking into for when I do Johnny’s Zaku.

The arm joints themselves are incredibly fluid and sturdy, even with a nice, functional wrist joint in the hand. I’d dare say they’re better than some contemporary Master Grades. Of course, the individually jointed fingers are still a pain…

One point of irritation is the backpack: it needs a LOT of paint. I wouldn’t be so bothered by this, especially since most of the parts are divided out already, except so many of them are white or red, two of the most annoying colors to paint. Oh well, nothing a little primer can’t fix…

When I was painting this, I attempted to go for the “dark blue on black” look, but the dark blue came out so dark it’s almost indistinguishable from the black!! Oh well, it’s still cool either way.

Yeah, this has been a pretty fun project, and I apologize for how long it’s been taking me to get started on it. I’m still not used to being back in school yet, oops. Either way, next time, you’ll see the legs, the weapons, and why I hate the little tubes. Til then, you should look for this kit at FPNYC—it’s totally worth it!

Master Grade Wing Gundam EW Build Log FINAL

Hey guys, remember when I was doing a build log of the Master Grade Wing Gundam?

Yeah… sorry about that.

Basically, I got busy with the end of the school year. That’s the short answer. The long answer is, my god, I hate painting anything remotely tube-shaped. It’s just so tedious and there’s almost no easy way to do it! It didn’t help that these turned out to be a part of the kit I don’t even use, but I’ll get to that later. The bulk of this article is going to talk about the transformation of the kit, since I covered a lot of it early on.

I tend to get a little worried when I transform painted kits. After all, I just spent hours upon hours painting this thing. I’d always wonder if the paint would get scratched or whatever. Now that I’ve done a few, I’ve come to not worry as much since these things are engineered to, you know, prevent most of that from happening. Either way, I’m still completely terrified to customize any Transformers. All the paint scratching there would just drive me insane.

The transformation on this kit is actually done pretty well, and holds, too! This kit was thankfully made after Bandai figured out how to do stable transforming kits—none of that MG Zeta 1.0 nightmare. The transformation is pretty simple, which is a good thing, especially when your kit has a non-transforming version. Several years ago, I made the mistake of buying the FAZZ Master Grade. There is nothing worse than building a transforming suit… that has all of the transformation parts negated by armor. That’s an experience I’d never like to relive.

I removed the v-fin during transformation, just as a safety measure. You never know what can happen with these little things…

The best part about this version of the kit is the two stand pieces, for use with action bases. They both work out perfectly, and make this the version you should buy. Seriously, they’re the only difference between this and the old Ver Ka.

There’s an issue with the gun on this kit: when this was made, hand slots for weapon holding weren’t standard, so the rifle doesn’t peg into the palm. There is a quick fix however: you can push the thumb down which will sort of lock it into place. It isn’t ideal, but it works.

Now, for the tubes I mentioned… yeah, I really hate these stupid energy pack things. Not only are they hard to paint and sand, but they also get in the way of the whole kit. I understand the point of them giving the Wing extra Buster Rifle rounds, but they just hang off the arms and don’t integrate into the design. I usually just leave them off.

While it’s the oldest of all the Gundam Wing Master Grades, it’s still held up pretty nicely. Obviously the frame isn’t as nice as the newer ones and it requires more sanding, but for a Master Grade made back in 2004, it’s all pretty par for the course. Definitely recommended. Make sure to pick one up if you ever see it at FPNYC!

MG Hyaku Shiki Build Log-PREGAME!

You know what makes this hobby absolutely toxic? When you get some kind of brilliant idea that you need to act on right away, otherwise you’re going to forget about it. Of course, I still have a backlog, but I don’t care! Chances are, if you give up on that idea it’ll get swept under the rug and you’ll forget about it. My current Master Grade addiction has proven to be toxic, but I’m gaining some pretty good skills out of it. Most of my projects lately have been strict out-of box affairs, but this one is going to be something a little different…

With my current Zeta Gundam kick, I felt it was wise to get a Hyaku Shiki. Problem is, there are three Master Grades of this thing. The first is the original release, with that SUPER gaudy chrome (not really my thing). The second version has no chrome; instead, a glossy yellow finish, and comes with the Ballute. The most recent release is the “High Definition” version, which has the same subdued finish as the HGUC with the Gryphios War set. Ideally, I’d like to get that version, but it’s impossible to find now. So, since I wanted to have a little painting project, I figured I’d grab the Ballute version, which also happens to be the cheapest. Go figure.

I was starting to realize the Mark II was going to have plenty of decals left over. Since the Titans don’t really have many Master Grades, I wanted to do something cool: Titans Hyaku Shiki. But I’m sure you’re saying, “But Sophie, those colors are so overdone!” Well yes, they are. Because of that, I’m doing the Titans colors from the Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam game.

…which are essentially Char colors.

In the game, there’s an alternate timeline where the Zabis survive the One Year War and Char joins the Titans as Quattro to take them down. He gets a pretty slick Hyaku Shiki out of the deal, too. So, I wanted to make that one. Char custom Hyaku Shikis have been done before but I don’t really like most of them. They either look too red or too pink. I think this color palette gets it just right, by basically translating the Zaku II’s palette over.

The red I’m using for the base is a mix of two parts white, one part yellow, and one part red. Yeah, I made a LOT of this. The other red is going to be British Crimson, a great choice for dark reds on Gunpla. The rest of the color scheme is just your typical blacks, gold, red, etc. I’ll probably top coat this with pearl coat. On purpose, this time!

But I’m not ready to be down with just a cool color scheme and decals, no way. I went the extra mile and grabbed one of the old light-up heads! It hasn’t come in yet, sadly. The problem is, it’s made for the old chrome kit, so I’ll have to strip the chrome off. I hear 409 cleaner works…

This is kind of a pre-game for this project, as I won’t be able to start this until I at least finish my High Mobility Zaku, so you’ll just have to wait and see! In the meantime, start your own projects with kits from FPNYC!
