Val’s Toy Chest- Star Wars Black In the House!

If you’ve read my past columns, you know that I’ve been a casual Star Wars fan since I was a little kid. I haven’t been a fan of the entire saga, choosing to mostly ignore the prequels as they didn’t appeal to me. I did give the latest film a shot and really loved it- it helped immensely that there was a strong female protagonist in Rey and characters I loved like Chewbacca, Han Solo and Leia Organa were back. On that note, after a long wait, we have finally started seeing some new pieces from Hasbro’s 6″ Black Series line. There have also been a couple of restocks including one of my very favorite figures of the entire series thus far.

Fans of the Original Trilogy, The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Rebels and even the prequels should be thrilled with the assortment of figures just released by Hasbro. From the very first movie, A New Hope, comes the Luke Skywalker figure dressed in his famous white and beige outfit. Luke comes with his signature blue lightsaber and a pair of binoculars which clip on to his belt. His white tunic is made out of cloth and he features several points of articulation. The Force Awakens still gets the lion’s share of the Star Wars Black line for the moment- at least until Star Wars: Rogue One comes out later in the year. Figures out in this recent assortment include First Order Snowtroopers and Flametroopers, plus Han Solo as he appeared in this seventh installment of the fan-favorite film series. Each of the troopers comes clad in their respective armors with multiple points of articulation and character-specific accessories. Han comes with his blaster and is also fully poseable.

Star Wars: Rebels has been a fairly popular animated series on the Cartoon Network and took over the reigns of the now defunct Clone Wars series. Hasbro has taken the character designs from the animated series and has given them a realistic look to fit in with the aesthetic of the regular Star Wars 6″ Black line. The first of the 6″ Rebels figures to arrive are Jedi Kanan Jarrus, the character played by Freddie Prinze, Jr. and fan-favorite character and original Clone Wars character, Ahsoka Tano, who has recently shown up on Rebels. Each figure comes with their distinctive lightsabers and follows the same poseability model as previous Star Wars Black figures. Finally- prequel fans get one of the cooler looking characters with the release of the Jango Fett 6″ Figure. Jango has his silver and blue Mandalorian armor, a removable helmet, his jetpack and two blasters.

Back in stock from Star Wars Black is the premier villain of the entire Star Wars universe, Darth Vader. I’d argue that this is probably my favorite figure in the entire Star Wars Black line, even over the Leia in Boushh disguise figure. Vader comes dressed in his iconic black armor with a sweeping black fabric cape, his famous helmet and his red-bladed lightsaber. The blade is detachable and the helmet is removable, which helps you to recreate the scene at the end of Return of the Jedi where he reveals his scarred face to Luke. Definitely one of the best 6″ figures at this price point. Also back in- one of the newest heroes from the Force Awakens, Finn. Finn is dressed in the outfit he crashed on Jakku in. Still available are X-Wing Pilot Poe Dameron and Constable Zuvio, whose character ended up on the cutting room floor.

Other toys scheduled to arrive this week include some Star Wars 3 3/4″ figures from the recent film, plus a restock on items from the wildly popular DC Collectibles Batman: The Animated Series line. Characters such as Bane, Batgirl, Killer Croc, The Joker, Harley Quinn, plus Batman and Robin should all be gracing our DC toy shelves again sometime this week. Newly arrived is the next figure in NECA’s popular videogame line, The Terminator 2 T-800 figure as seen in the 1991 T2 Video Game. Decorated to resemble his 8-bit pixelated appearance in the game, the figure is fully articulated and comes with interchangeable heads and a shotgun.

On a quick note, I’ve been listening to a lot of Prince this week due to his untimely passing. Prince may not have had a deep comics connection other than his soundtrack contributions to Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film and a rare Piranha Press one-shot comic book, but he was an icon nonetheless and was definitely a memorable part of my youth. R.I.P. Purple One and thanks for “Manic Monday,” “When Doves Cry,” “Purple Rain” and so much more.

TRY SOMETHING NEW Chapter 22: This Is Madness!

Sometimes weird stuff happens in your life. Like, for example, you decide you want to write comics for a living and then someone hires you to do that. That is a really weird and wonderful and stressful and anxiety producing thing. Also, weirdly, that exact thing happened to me. I got hired to write a comic and, as anxious as it makes me to tell you all this, it comes out this week. The book is called TWELVE REASONS TO DIE and I was lucky enough to work on it with RZA and Ghostface Killah from the Wu-Tang Clan. It’s an insane mashup of Giallo crime stories and all sorts of horror elements. As truly awesome as getting hired by those guys for this book is, I feel just as lucky to be getting to work with over 20 of my favorite artists in comics. Ron Wimberly, Tim Seeley, Paolo Rivera, Ramon Perez, Shaky Kane, Anders Nilsen, Phil Noto, Joe Infurnari, Tony Moore, Ben Templesmith, Jim Mahfood, Johnny Ryan, Chris Mitten, Riley Rossmo, Nate Powell, Tyler Crook, and a ton more awesome folks are all contributing to the book. I should probably say something snarky and obnoxious about this but mostly I just get kind of sickly feeling when I have to think about it for too long so I will just ask, if you like my column here, maybe pick my book up off the shelf and see if you might like it. And if you put it back, please put it back in the right place. It’s super #@%*!^& annoying when you don’t do that.

Since my book only costs $3.50 and this store can’t operate without money I am now going to encourage you to buy some other stuff too. I don’t make these recommendations with any less enthusiasm then I did the previous one, it will just feel that way. CHIN MUSIC #1. At this point I shouldn’t have to explain this drill to you. Image launches a new series. Not too many people buy it. Then 3 months pass. The book is a hit at some convention or some tv producer buys the rights. Everybody on earth falls in love with it. It has become tv hot. Or con hot. You all come back begging for copies of issue #1. We laugh at you. Let’s cut out some of the steps. Chin Music is the new book from horror icon Steve Niles (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) and Tony Harris (EX MACHINA) and it’s a mystical crime story set around prohibition. It is beautiful and, I don’t say this lightly, intriguing. This book could legitimately be the best work of Steve Niles’ very impressive career. Buy it now and get intrigued.

This is a personal note for Dan DiDio and Axel Alonso. Guys. How’s it going? You guys have a lot of books to put out each month. That must be hard. That is a lot of writers to try and find to write your books. I mean, Scott Snyder and Brian Bendis can each only write what? 10, maybe 20 comics a month. Well I am here to make your lives a little easier today. Buy COMEBACK, then email Ed Brisson and tell him you want him to write… well, anything. It isn’t often that I come across a new writer who blows me away. The same is probably true for you. Who was the last writer whose work you absolutely fell in love with? Who you knew was going to be a career worth following. For me it was Ed Brisson as I got 5 pages into COMEBACK. Equal parts crime noir and sci-fi time travel head#*$&, Comeback is one of those books you want everyone you know to read so you can all discuss it. It’s as smart as it is cool, it tells a time travel story that both makes sense and will mess you up for days, and it looks amazing. I can safely say Comeback is the best book I read so far this year and I don’t see much on the horizon to come after it. This is just one of those books that will stick with you. So thanks Ed Brisson. Remember all the nice stuff I said here when you become a comic superstar.

SPIDER-MEN was the gimmicky crossover event Marvel did where regular Peter Parker met ultimate Miles Morales. Here’s the thing. The scene where a grown up Peter Parker meets the alternate universe teenage Gwen Stacy is one of the best moments I have ever read in comics. It draws upon 40 years of Spider-Man history, 13 years of Ultimate Spider-Man history, and produces one of the best, most human moments I have ever read in a superhero comic. This book is beautiful, fun, and has one of my favorite comic scenes of all time. You should probably just buy it.

It’s nice to see Matt Kindt getting the recognition he deserves. Marvel and DC are fighting over him, his book MIND MGMT has taken off, and he seems like a really nice dude. It’s funny though because I fell in love with Kindt’s work because I thought he could do small and personal better than most, yet here he is getting noticed for this big bombastic stuff. Well, now he is releasing a new OGN that is more a return to his earlier form. RED HANDED- THE FINE ART OF STRANGE CRIMES is an amazingly fun detective story about a small town dick has become so good at his job that crime no longer exists. Imagine his surprise when new and bizarre crimes begin taking over the town. Equal parts human interest story and absurdist mystery, Red Handed is an early frontrunner for underappreciated book of the year.

I love a book that comes out of left field and just floors you. For me that was MUMBAI CONFIDENTIAL. A gritty cop story that doesn’t look like anything else on shelves, Mumbai Confidential is a stunningly good book. Based on a true story, MC follows 2 cops who are tasked with cleaning up the streets of Mumbai after they have been taken over by organized crime. The Indian government gave these officers carte blanche to use lethal force as they saw fit. That’s the set up for Judge Dredd too, only this one is true and much more terrifying. Equal parts Hong Kong action flick and crime noir comic, MC is well worth your time.

I also wanted to briefly take a minute to say thanks to a bunch of the FP staff. This isn’t really the right forum for this but I am pretty awkward and comics don’t usually have a thank you page so I just want to wholeheartedly thank Jeff and the anthropomorphic business that is FP for being supportive and dealing with me being pretty sleep deprived and crazed most of the time. A huge thanks to Tyler, Ben, Javier, and Vita for going above and beyond always. My sincerest thanks and apologies to the rest of the staff for having to listen to me talk about this all the time and still being nice to me. I am awful but you all are pretty good so it balances out in the end. And special thanks to Carly for always being a great friend and being more supportive than I deserve. It all means more than you know. Now if you’ll excuse me I am going to go be all awkward and weird and watch people not buy my comic.

Balt Salt Zombies is simply a creative and chaotic caper from a pretty prolific artist coming into his own. –  Patrick Dolan, RUE MORGUE

Bath Salt Zombies is a new horror film directed and co-written by Dustin Wayde Mills (Puppet Monster Massacre, Zombie A-Hole, Ballad of Skinless Pete) and produced and co-written by Clint Weiler of Aggronautix. The movie sensationalizes the recent bath salt epidemic and the attacks surrounding them.

On March 9th at Forbidden Planet, starting at 7PM writer/producer Clint Weiler and members of the band World War IX will be on hand for signings. The band will be signing copies of their new EP “Off The Wagon” featuring the Bath Salt Zombies theme song. Guitar player Justin Melkmann will also be showcasing his newest comic book Ear Aches and Eye Sores #4, Melkmann’s Slap in the Face My Obsession with GG Allin has always been a big hit on Forbidden Planet’s indie rack when available.
Also, a VERY limited edition VHS of Bath Salt Zombies will be available at the signing. Collectors of this medium will no doubt want one.
At 8PM, singer Filthy Phil will be recording live in the store for his weekly podcastDispatches From The Underground so come on down for a chance to be on the show.
Later that night join the band in Brooklyn for a Midnight Screening of Bath Salt Zombies at The Spectacle Theater hosted by the fine folks at Horror Boobs. Spectacle Theater is located at 124 S.3rd Street (near Bedford Ave) Williamsburg, admission is 5 dollars.
“Although the film is somewhat of a black comedy, I wanted to portray the real power of drugs in a horror story… Dustin was able to pull it off with ease,” said Weiler who wrote the treatment for the film and worked on the basic characterization.

“It’s off the wall comic book insanity with blood, gore, nudity, martial arts, gunfights, and a mutant jack-chi,” said Mills. “You should check your brain at the door and prepare to have your face melted off.”

SYNOPSIS:

Present day, United States… The bath salts epidemic facing the southern and mid-western US has been stifled by an unprecedented government crackdown. Head shops have been raided and shut down, component imports from the UK, India and China have been completely stopped, and aggressive penalties for users have been instated. This has led to a tremendous amount of surplus stock hidden by black market dealers, and a migration of those dealers (and in turn, users) to the northeast and other areas. In New York City, potent strands have surfaced and have attracted the most devoted bath salt junkies. In an attempt to outsell said strands, a young aspiring chemist has developed and even stronger batch… but something has gone horribly wrong. The new ultra potent bath salt batch has revealed a major side effect… It turns users into violent flesh seeking “zombies.” When the zombies are high on balt salts, they are completely unaware of their actions and they seem to float in and out of consciousness. When they kill / eat people, they are unaware of what has happened when they come down off the drug. The drug is also more addictive than other forms, and users feel the need to stay constantly high due to the fact they become incredibly feeble when sober. They come down HARD.

FACTS ABOUT THE BATH SALT EPIDEMIC:

Traditional “bath salts” consist of a combination of amphetamine-like chemicals, mainly mephedrone, MDPV and methylone. Users of the drug have reported feeling incredibly hot, which is why many get naked (in this case, it gives us cause for female nudity). They also develop superhuman strength (it can take five or six men to restrain them) and become so manic and delusional that the term “excited delirium” is being used by the medical community to describe their mental state. The shocking wave of attacks has sparked fears of a real-life zombie outbreak in the south. This led to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention releasing a statement saying it is not aware of any virus that can cause zombie-like behavior. A spokesman said: “MDPV is an illegal and harmful drug and stiff penalties are in place for people who possess or supply it. Drugs ruin lives which is why we are taking tough action against dealers and criminal gangs and helping people to free themselves from the cycle of dependency.”

STARRING: Brandon Salkil, Josh Eal, Ethan Holey, Dave Parker, Jackie McKown, and more.

TRY SOMETHING NEW CHAPTER 7: Against The Evil Galactic Empire.

(note: This weeks column will be structured like a Choose Your Own Adventure. If you do not understand what a Choose Your Own Adventure story is you should call your parents and ask them why they didn’t give you a better childhood.)

So here we are again. Me at my computer, drinking chocolate milk like an adult. It’s 3 AM. I had a really long day and I don’t want to get into the details. On the bright side I had dinner at a Chinese restaurant next to Peter Scolari. I also thought I recognized the guy sitting on the other side of the room but I realized after dinner that I thought it was Walter Cronkite and I am pretty sure he’s dead. So that was either not him or the craziest celebrity sighting ever. Peter Scolari isn’t dead, right? If he is, you all should check out this Chinese spot on 74th and Amsterdam. It’s like Dawn Of The Dead but with soup dumplings. Anyway, enough about me. What’s going on with you? If you are reading the newsletter in Forbidden Planet please proceed to PARAGRAPH 1. If you are reading the blog on FPNYC.com skip ahead to PARAGRAPH 2. If you are reading the newsletter somewhere outside the store please jump to PARAGRAPH 3.

1. I see. Well, it’s good to see you in Forbidden Planet again. It feels like it’s been a while. Did you see Forbidden Planet’s own technical wizard/artistic muse Tyler yet? He’s here somewhere. He is always in the store. If you find him you should give him a hug. He will act like he doesn’t want you to, but he does. Maybe he’s downstairs. Duck under the rope and look for him in “The Dungeon”. (editor’s note: customers are not allowed to duck under the rope or touch Tyler.) Go on. It’s fine. Never listen to editors, cops, or your parents. The Dungeon is cool. It is full of Abominations and staff members eating halal food. Anyway, thanks for reading this before you do your shopping. You seem like a real savvy customer who wants to TRY SOMETHING NEW. Would you be offended if I made a suggestion? If you want to hear Matthew’s recommendation for you hurl onward to PARAGRAPH 4. If you want to act like a weirdo jerk and not hear his recommendation then slither ahead to PARAGRAPH 9.

2. Oh that’s cool. And hey, thanks for coming to FPNYC.com. There’s so much stuff on the internet. Some folks would have you believe there is too much stuff, but those folks are sociopaths. Either way, it really means a lot to me that you came all the way out here to the middle on internet nowhere to read this of all things. You can’t tell right now, but your dedication to our little blog just made technical wizard/evil henchmen Tyler tear up just now. He is acting like he has something in his eye but he doesn’t. He is an emotional dude. Don’t judge. Anyway, I think it’s really cool that you came here. I know you could be watching that video of the guy teaching the baby wolf how to howl or trying to figure out what Hawkeye from the Avengers would look like if he were a sexy lady. But you have a dedication to seeking out some of the worst comics journalism of all time and I think that is swell. That reminds me, do you know what book you might like? If you don’t know what book you might like and want to find out hop along to PARAGRAPH 6. If you are some freak who somehow already knows all of the books he/she will ever like crawl forward to PARAGRAPH 9.

3. Hey. Sorry to cut you off but I got something to say. I don’t want to be a jerk here but I am a little annoyed. Why would you come into Forbidden Planet, pick up a newsletter, and then wait to read it until you left? How are my book recommendations going to help you now? You can come back in a few days and hope that all the books I’ve recommended aren’t sold out, but I make no guarantees. A lot of people read this newsletter in the store and I am very persuasive. Anyway, I am not mad or anything, just disappointed. Our technical wizard/ jackbooted thug Tyler is really mad though. Next time you come into the store you better hope he isn’t in. Lucky for you, Tyler is almost never in the store. Anyway, I want to prove to you that I’m not mad. I want to recommend a book. Cool? If you want to be cool with Matthew launch yourself over to PARAGRAPH 8. If you don’t want to be cool with Matthew or anyone else creep on to PARAGRAPH 9.

4. I think you might like DARK HORSE PRESENTS #20. It’s one of the great comic anthologies of all time, showcasing amazing legends and exciting up and comers in all genres. Two cool new stories begin in this issue; Michael Avon Oeming‘s dark superhero story THE VICTORIES, and Geoffrey Thorne and Todd Harris‘ intriguing JOURNEYMEN! Josh Williamson‘s great take on the old pulp hero CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT is a great read for anyone who appreciates fun action, which you seem like you do. And this issue also has another installment of one of my favorite new series of 2012- THE WHITE SUITS. Crime and conspiracy stuff done in a fresh and stylized way, THE WHITE SUITS short story makes DARK HORSE PRESENTS worth the cover price alone. Anyway, pick this one up. It’s right over there on the shelf. I’m sure you’ll like it. If you pick up DARK HORSE PRESENTS #20 walk over to the register where one of the register jockeys will ring you up and say “do you want a bag and board for this?” even though it won’t fit in a bag because it is prestige format. THE END. If you choose not to buy DARK HORSE PRESENTS #20 lurk on over to PARAGRAPH 9.

5. The ground you are standing on momentarily groans like an old man before it gives way. You fall for what feels like a lifetime but is only a moment. Mercifully, you stop with a violent splash. You have landed in what seems to be water… maybe. As you look up you can just barely make out the fading sunlight. It’s beautiful, shades of red and orange blend together like a Gauguin. You barely hear tires kick up dirt as your only “friends” drive away. Are they laughing? The water is violently cold, a cold you could have never imagined. It fights its way deep into your muscles, into your bones even. They burn against the cold but it is a losing battle. The pain begins to give way to an almost peacefulness as treading water becomes harder and harder. Hypothermia begins to set in and you find that you now think of yourself in the past tense, “I was so young.” The universe doesn’t care though. THE END.

6. This is what I wanted to show you. It’s DAN THE UNHARMABLE. Have you read the single issues? No? Well that’s fine because this is the first volume of the collection. It’s by David Lapham. You may know him from such disturbing and ultraviolent books as CROSSED, CALIGULA, or FERALS. Or you might know him from a personal favorite of mine, STRAY BULLETS. STRAY BULLETS is one of the smartest and best slice of life/crime/I don’t know what books ever written. It’s LOVE & ROCKETS but with more murder. Lapham has an extraordinary ability to blur lines between the disturbing, the tragic, and the hilarious. DAN THE UNHARMABLE tells the story of an immortal private eye who gets caught up in a very personal case. It is violent, crass, low brow, funny, and exciting. Lapham can pull off this kind of schizophrenic storytelling in ways no one else would think of trying. If any of that interests you grab this and proceed to check out. If you order a copy of DAN THE UNHARMABLE vol 1 sit by your mailbox for a few days until the postman puts it in your hand. Thank your postman. It’s a thankless job. THE END. If you choose not to buy DAN THE UNHARMABLE Vol. 1. scurry on over to PARAGRAPH 9.

7. Her lips graze your neck and you can feel your pulse quicken. Her warm breath on your skin makes your toes tingle. She whispers something you can’t quite make out and your whole body starts to go numb. “Did she just say my real name?!” you think to yourself. Startled, you go to push her away but your legs give out before your hands can respond to your mental commands. You fall to the ground like a hostage dropped out the front door during a botched bank robbery. You hit the ground head first and your neck twists violently but painlessly to the right. The acrid taste of bile creeps up the back of your throat and fills your mouth. You can see part of your body you have never seen before; your back. Sticking straight out like a flag, the syringe she used is clearly visible. She leans down over you and sensually whispers one last sentence to you, “The universe wanted you dead.” No it doesn’t, you wanted to be able to tell her. It just doesn’t care. THE END.

8. So these Marvel Now books have been really great. Strong and smart editorial leadership has managed to put together a lot of really smart and interesting books without abandoning what came before them. THOR, ALL NEW X-MEN, NEW AVENGERS, CAPTAIN MARVEL, SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, there are almost too many good Marvel books to name right now. Well two more enter the fold this week with #1 issues. Ron Garney and indie hotshot Sam Humphries launch an all new UNCANNY X-FORCE this week. Mohawk Storm is all you really need to know. Mr. Humphries likes to take his stories down unusual paths and that is just what an X-Force book should do, go where you least expect it. This may not be high on a lot of folks lists, but neither was Rick Remender‘s run on UNCANNY X-FORCE, and that ended up being one of the best Marvel books in 10 years.

In addition to UNCANNY X-FORCE #1, this week sees YOUNG AVENGERS #1. Most people don’t know this because most people didn’t read it but Allan Heinberg‘s YOUNG AVENGERS series was absolutely brilliant. It was a great idea grounded in very smart, very human characters. If Marvel played their cards right that book should have been the hit that Brian K. Vaughan‘s RUNAWAYS was, but they didn’t and it wasn’t. Well now Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie, known separately for doing all sorts of really good stuff but known together as the team behind the brilliant and shamefully underloved PHONOGRAM are reuniting to make the Young Avengers count. There are a ton of great characters to fall in love with here and both of these guys excel at really good down to earth storytelling. And both Gillen and McKelvie are British indie rock dudes so hopefully they will throw in some references to The Arctic Monkeys or Caves or Chvrches or chip butty or stab vests or 56 Up or something else Americans don’t understand. I am excited to see a new young Marvel team act like a bunch of chavs. I hope someone calls Captain America a geezer. $5 says they throw in a reference to Ziggy Stardust before issue 6. That stuff is like their bible. If you want to go back to the store and buy copies of UNCANNY X-FORCE #1 & YOUNG AVENGERS #1 do so soon. Forbidden Planet are keeping some copies warm, but it’s cold out there. Hurry, hurry, super scurry! THE END. If you choose not to buy either of these books mosey on over to PARAGRAPH 9.

9. “Well it doesn’t seem like I have anything I can offer you. I tried to be nice. I tried to be helpful. I recommended cool new books. You seem uninterested. You seem like something is bothering you. Oh well. I hope you have a great life though.” With that your time with TRY SOMETHING NEW comes to an end. You can read on and find out if Unkie Dev still likes Hellboy a lot. You can go even further still and find out if that other guy still likes incomprehensible Japanese robot toys. But you won’t. Your ennui pushes you out the door. You need to walk. You wander for hours only to find yourself in a deserted part of town. Nearly deserted. You think you are being followed now but you can’t be sure. You duck into an alley to get away or maybe it’s just to clear your head. Why would someone be after you? You decide to stay in the alley just to catch your breath. You are safe. No one wants to hurt you. A misguided feeling of relief washes over. You decide to make the most of the alley and look into some people’s windows because, well, because you’re not a good person. As you look into a dingy studio apartment you catch a reflection in the window of a crazed, half starved man looming behind you. All at once three things enter your head. The first is “Was that tech wizard/escaped mental patient Tyler?” The second is “Was that a brick in his hand?” And the last thing to enter your head is the aforementioned brick. As you bleed to death in the backstreets of Anytown USA you finally understand that neither Tyler nor the universe ever cared about you. You realize that you wasted a great opportunity. You realize you should have TRIED SOMETHING NEW. THE END.

Master Grade Wing Gundam EW Build Log FINAL

Hey guys, remember when I was doing a build log of the Master Grade Wing Gundam?

Yeah… sorry about that.

Basically, I got busy with the end of the school year. That’s the short answer. The long answer is, my god, I hate painting anything remotely tube-shaped. It’s just so tedious and there’s almost no easy way to do it! It didn’t help that these turned out to be a part of the kit I don’t even use, but I’ll get to that later. The bulk of this article is going to talk about the transformation of the kit, since I covered a lot of it early on.

I tend to get a little worried when I transform painted kits. After all, I just spent hours upon hours painting this thing. I’d always wonder if the paint would get scratched or whatever. Now that I’ve done a few, I’ve come to not worry as much since these things are engineered to, you know, prevent most of that from happening. Either way, I’m still completely terrified to customize any Transformers. All the paint scratching there would just drive me insane.

The transformation on this kit is actually done pretty well, and holds, too! This kit was thankfully made after Bandai figured out how to do stable transforming kits—none of that MG Zeta 1.0 nightmare. The transformation is pretty simple, which is a good thing, especially when your kit has a non-transforming version. Several years ago, I made the mistake of buying the FAZZ Master Grade. There is nothing worse than building a transforming suit… that has all of the transformation parts negated by armor. That’s an experience I’d never like to relive.

I removed the v-fin during transformation, just as a safety measure. You never know what can happen with these little things…

The best part about this version of the kit is the two stand pieces, for use with action bases. They both work out perfectly, and make this the version you should buy. Seriously, they’re the only difference between this and the old Ver Ka.

There’s an issue with the gun on this kit: when this was made, hand slots for weapon holding weren’t standard, so the rifle doesn’t peg into the palm. There is a quick fix however: you can push the thumb down which will sort of lock it into place. It isn’t ideal, but it works.

Now, for the tubes I mentioned… yeah, I really hate these stupid energy pack things. Not only are they hard to paint and sand, but they also get in the way of the whole kit. I understand the point of them giving the Wing extra Buster Rifle rounds, but they just hang off the arms and don’t integrate into the design. I usually just leave them off.

While it’s the oldest of all the Gundam Wing Master Grades, it’s still held up pretty nicely. Obviously the frame isn’t as nice as the newer ones and it requires more sanding, but for a Master Grade made back in 2004, it’s all pretty par for the course. Definitely recommended. Make sure to pick one up if you ever see it at FPNYC!
