The urban legend known as ‘The Father’s Day Killer’ began some years after the demise of serial rapist/murderer Chris Fuchman. Since the 1970s, the use of contraceptives has tripled in North America alone and a generation of fathers fell asleep with the covers pulled tight, buttocks clenched. The story has become a fire-side cautionary ritual on camping trips, often used by fathers to warn their sons of the dangers of unplanned pregnancy. That deep seeded fear of penetration, violation and eventually death waned as the murder and rape of fathers continued to decline all over the world. Unfortunately those numbers didn’t remain low, and it would seem that the legend is not yet complete…

Ahab, a man obsessed with exacting a brutal, violent revenge on the man who murdered his dad, joins John, an eager priest and Twink, a hot-headed street hustler on an epic quest to find and defeat this mythical monster known as Chris Fuchman AKA The Father’s Day Killer.

E.T. tends to vacillate into my top 5 favorite flicks list every few years, and this new poster definitely has rekindled my enthusiasm for the Spielberg masterpiece.

Praise Jeebus!  Has it been 30 years since I saw E.T. at the Loew’s Paradise on the Grand Concourse in the Boogie Down Bronx?!?!?!?!?!?  30 years since a crying, 4 year old Jeff Ayers and his father were denied entry the day it opened as the movie had sold out multiple screenings?  The anniversary of one of the most cherished and vivid memories of my life… a little girl, around my age, who witnessed my dismay at having to wait to see it even offered us her and her father’s tickets.  We eventually declined and I calmed down enough to wait a day, but even if I live another 30 years I’ll never forget her empathy and kindness in that moment.

And that’s really what E.T. is, isn’t it?  A story of kindness and empathy that is just as impactful today as was the generous actions of a little girl on a gorgeous June morning in the Bronx in 1982.

I haven’t even researched which version (1982 or 2002) will be re-released, but I’ll not nitpick other than to say it’s the ‘82 version with an anniversary here.  That’s what should be focused on.

On another anecdotal note… I  wore Buster Brown E.T. sneakers until late 1984.  Who’s a cool guy?

Some of us refuse to let go of our VHS tapes.

One reason is that they have become a treasure trove of trailers for movies that time forgot. Being forced to scan past them each time you want to get to the feature, you end up developing an affection for these seemingly made-up movies. For the VHS Trailer Show, we present you with our favorite trailers, directly from VHS tapes. Armed with their favorites will be Cinebeasts, Matt Desiderio (Horror Boobs), Mark Freado (Junk Food Dinner), Sean Price Williams (DP for The Color Wheel), Cristina Cacioppo (92YTribeca’s film programmer), a special segment of “VHS Trailers That Should Have Been” from the Found Footage Festival and more.

We’ll also invite audience members to share their favorites, so if you’ve got a tape, cue it up!

Those f00ls good people over at the 92Y were dumb nice enough to let me join in on this wonderful event once again!  I thought my theme of nudity in trailers would have surely gotten my name crossed off of the future contributor list, even the extended Ilsa She Wolf of the SS trailer went over surprisingly well… or at least as good as it possibly could have.  So come on down and check out some insane trailers straight from VHS care of people like Mark Freado of Junk Food Dinner, The Found Footage Festival and me, Matt Desiderio, Forbidden Planet’s very own VHS expert.
