Will someone please tell Bono that the Spider-Man musical is dead?

U2′s Bono and The Edge talked to the Guardian a while back about the Spider-Man musical.

“We don’t really like musicals,” the Edge said. “Most musicals are really pants. They’re really not very cool.” Instead, they suggest people use a much more cool term: opera. “It touches on opera, it touches on rock’n'roll … It is much more like opera than a straight musical.”

Julie Taymor will direct the Broadway show, to be called Turn Off the Dark. Bono and the Edge – though not the other two members of U2 – will provide lyrics and music.

“We made one rule for ourselves,” the Edge said. “That we would never have Spider-Man singing. A guy singing in tights can’t happen.” That’s not the case for love-interest Mary Jane, to be played by Evan Rachel Wood, or for the “extraordinary” – and as-yet unannounced – female villain. But even if Spider-Man might not be singing, it seems likely his alter ego, Peter Parker, will warble a rock aria or two. And yet theirs is not the typical Peter Parker, according to Bono. Parker “[is] not [quite] Kurt Cobain, but a kind of slacker, a more kind of shy sort of guy,” he said.

Heh, Kurt Cobain/Peter Parker? Uhm, I’m not following.  Like, I don’t see the correlation.  Can someone explain to them this, ’cause they seem to be terribly out of the loop. Though I am with them in the sense that musicals are “pants”.  KTHXBYE.

WOAH: Disney to buy Marvel Comics for $4 Billion.

Marvel Characters

The New York Times reports this morning that Disney is going to buy Marvel Comics for an estimated four billion dollars.

Under the terms of the deal, Marvel shareholders will receive a $30 a share in cash plus about 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. The boards of both companies have approved the deal, which was valued at $50 a share.

With the acquisition, Disney will acquire more than 5,000 Marvel characters.

“We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,” the chief executive of Disney, Robert A. Iger, said in a statement.

Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s chief executive, said: “Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses. This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”

Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel’s properties.

Congratulations are in order. This is outstanding. I have to wonder whether this will affect it in the manner that affects DC/Warners. I hope not, but Marvel Talent Scout C.B. Cebulski did have this to say:

Well, I don’t think anyone has anything to worry about if that’s the case.

Batman Beyond miniseries announced.

Batman Beyond

Last week, Dan DiDio announced at Newsarama that the classic epilogue to Paul Dini and Bruce Timm’s Batman The Animated Series would return to DC in a miniseries.

11. darknight11 asked:
you said Terry McGinnis will back in the DCU; will he have his own mini series?

DiDio: There will be a Terry McGinnis mini-series early next year. We’ve heard the fans, we’ve heard everyone’s interest. And right now we’re planning to put out a Batman Beyond mini-series in 2010.

Sweet.  I’ve always loved the original series, in all the multiple reality futures of what happens to Bruce Wayne/Batman, Batman Beyond always seemed the most natural. And yes, that also means the current path they are taking. I’m wondering whether this will have anything to do with what’s currently going on in Batman.
